Wohooo, what a brutal machine! I got the opportunity to take a testride on the new KTM 1290 SAR on backroads and gravel roads. Will my 790 Adv R survive this? Bikes compared side by side. Did I Steve McQueen'ed it? 😂

Love my new 890 rally , have about 1000km’s on super smooth power suspension off-road is simply incredible, love the new 1290 but don’t need the extra power or weight...in my opinion would rather have the rally suspension over more HP,,,cheers from Canada

We are on the same page here! When I jumped up on my 790R and took the backroads home again it felt just right. Still my unicorn. 💪

@@Braapncamp after 3100kms on my 701e 2021 i sold it. And i believe you are right, the 890 is the perfect inbetween. In my opinion is the 1290 a great bike but I think it might be a little bit to much. I will most likely buy the 890adr as my next bike.

@@Parakitedude I'm curious of why the 701 did not do it for You? The 890R is a great bike for everything and to me mt 790R is more bike in a positive way than the 690 I had.

@@Braapncamp the 701e is a great bike. I Love it, but i felt that it lacks on tarmac and in the highway. Going long transports on highways is very tough and I want the option of taking a longer trip on tarmac and in speeds around 110km/h without the vibrations and wind

Thats exactly what the 890R excels in, better comfort but still very capable offroad.

Hallo Mattias, compared to the earlier model of the 1290 Super Adventure S from 2017 the new model is better in so many ways. First of all. The new bike is much better balanced and therefore so much easier to ride. The handling is so easy und I felt so confident and save on the new bike from the first moment on. Much less effort is needed while riding, much less bodymovement is needed to control the power. My 1290 Super Adventure S from 2017 was always "my big beast". I liked the power but I had to be very aware of what I'm doing, to avoid dropping it, beginning from getting on the bike and starting the ride, because it was so top heavy and not very good balanced, over riding fast and narrow curves, up to riding downhill offroad, what could be quite scary sometimes. The new model feels much smaller and everything feels smoother. The engine is so smooth, the sound (is almost the same but a little bit reduced - very good), the quickshifter was very good on my previous 1290 but it'is so much better now. Everything is made better - a slight bit or a big bit. So far the heat of the engine was very hot under me. Hot legs and hot backside are ok in wintertime (extra heating is welcome when it's cold) but in summertime it defenitly was too hot. Now KTM worked on that issue and solved the problem. Now the heat goes around the rider. Perfect! I liked the display of my 1290 Super Adventure S. But the new display and the graphics are just "wow"!!! The opportunity to have your personal presettings is realy a big step ahead compared to my 1290 from 2017. KTM kept the good things about the bike - that's the best. It's got still that character of a beast and it's still a big powerful bike, comfortable and sporty with racing genes. But now it feels elegant, is agile and easy to use. And the look of the new R... what can I say? I fell in Love! It was love at first sight!!! I'm so happy that my dealer Motoyama in Ravensburg, Germany, could sell me one. It seems not so easy to get this brand new model at the moment. But I'm sure that in the future this beauty will find many buyers.

Thanks for a great review, Mattias. I think I see one in my future, fantastic bike. You hit the nail on the head mentioning the Rally DNA, I think they have a different approach at KTM and it shows in their bikes. I have to admit I am already a fan of the orange bikes🤗. Ride safe.

I own an 18 that I put 25,000-miles on in fourteen months (two cross continent trips and daily use). I appreciate the less refined nature of the older model. There is no doubt this is a more capable machine for more people, which is a step forward. I use mine like a two-wheeled WRC car, so the rawness of the experience is my favorite aspect. I have ridden it extensively on every twisty road of mention in North America, from Dease Lake Highway in BC to Tail of the Dragon and literally everything in between. Blah, blah, blah aside, I would buy anything KTM threw a 1290 in. Riding one in anger is a transcendent experience. Cheers.

Very good review. The new 1290 is a wonderful motorcycle. It’s a pain KTM not providing the 790/890 bikes with the aesthetics of the big ones (specially on the fairing area) and that they stick with a so much reduced color scheme.

@@Braapncamp the Color scheme on the 790 R RALLY is much better than on the standard version. Against the 790 RALLY it is hard to compete 😀

@@espero7757 For sure the Rally looks awesome. I think that the insect like head of our 790/890 is there to save weight (or insect design 😂), The 1290 tank to fairing/tower design looks more like on the 950/990 which many still like. I just don't really care as long as the bike braaps ☝️😁.

Thanks for posting. Have been waiting to see a test or test ride of this bike.. I currently have a 17’ 1290 SAR and have been considering the new bike. I am definitely interested in the lower CG with the new fuel tank design... unfortunately I am being to,d that we (USA) are not getting the new bike this year for some unknown reason, so I guess I will have one more year of research before I get a chance to throw my leg over one. Thanks again for the review and posting it..

Great looking bike. My only concern is there's so many expensive things you could break, whilst riding off road. And that's what it's designed for. I ride the 1090r which has a lot less gadgets you could damage or break.

Always a risk, this bike should be compared to the 1200 GSA. Big bike adventures in main focus a traveller with serious capabilities and makes you confident even if it gets rough. In that category this bike is outstanding.

You must be close to KTM sponsorship now. I note they claim to have reduced the amount of hot air blowing on your legs, that would be worth verifying in summer. Still weighs 230+ kg so you would not want to be a lightweight rider. The display looks great but they should swap the gear position indicator for the speed reading. It’s more important to know your speed with 160 Hp, rather than the gear.

😂😂 I wish... You are right, even if this bike is incredibly agile and handles well for it's weight, I still prefer a bike that max has the weight of my own. Yes I saw that KTM had made effort to let the hot air out high up on the sides. Nice design. In these temp, heat is welcome though 😁. Regarding the display, there was a customization menu. It could be possible to have speed more visible. I actually realized how fast it picked up speed and with that small speed figures up in the corner it was easy to "forget". Maybe KTM has a sort of „radar sensor“ built in avoiding to get into the speed control 😂

I finally broke down and sold my 890 rally and bought a 1290R, was addicted to the motor and far superior wind protection for the longer days and also love the new TFT…ironically it takes me everywhere my 890 rally off-road ….for more serious adv riding I’ll either put together a 500 or 690 with some type of tower !….all first world problems :)

I have opportunity to ride 1290 super adventure and I was shocked how handy this machine in town traffic 😃 - compare to my Duke 690 R in Adventure mirrors are higher and they are just avoiding any unexpected contact with cars mirrors!, and center of mass is in perfect position👌 = easy riding

I definitely agree, bike is intuitive to ride and have a very agile handling. Clutch feeling is a lot less rough that on my 790R as well.

@@Braapncamp For the 790 the 1-Finger Clutch system is a real help and the feeling for the clutch gets nice.

@@espero7757 Yeah I know that! But I try to have as much traction and throttle so the clutch is less needed 👀😂. But if rough trail riding is the majority part of rides then I would consider it. A nice option for sure. Harder clutch springs as well 👌.

Lucky man. My dealer hasn't got one yet. Interesting that you think it's lower than your 790. That's good as I was put off by the previous model and had to buy the S instead.

Yeah my dealer really has volume on sales so they can have demo bikes. Definitely a privilege to be able to test these bikes. But it could hurt the wallet, with a machine like this. It's definitely the most capable bike in the category and who can't like it... It's brutal but very agile.

great Review Mattias I am surprised how much lower the 1290 saR looks compared to the 790 adv R 😮 I think with the 790 i always have a feeling that on the gravel roads i can get everything out of it that is in there without it being to Fast I don't think I will ever be able you use the full potential of the 1290 on gravel roads without scaring myself😱 and as you state below the 790 is your Unicorn Mine also 😊

Thanks Emile! For sure the 790/890 has power enough, even the 790 is too powerful at WOT on most situations. The 790R has better balanced suspension as well what I could feel (for rough road).

Nice bike, I got to try the 2020 model last spring before I bought my 790 R, hopefully there will be a possibility to test this year's model as well, I guess it's only gotten better with the low tanks. If my main use would be travel and light offroad, would definitely consider the 1290 over 790/890, but the 790 is so much easier to handle offroad that I am very happy with the "cheaper" option :)

Nice looking bike, but you’re 790R looks maybe a little more raw. I don’t know why but for some reason I think it looks better with black around the headlights instead of white. But of course it’s a beautiful bike.

The SAS version is orange and black instead, I would not be surprised if some SAR guys will buy the SAS plastics and swap. My 790R makes it for me.

😂 It's not ment to either! Each bike has it's own charm and this one ticks all the boxes technically if this segment is the preference. For local riding and commuting a smaller bike is preferable in mani reasons. I'm just convinced that I have a really nice bike already. 😁

How does the gas tank height and width compare to the previous 1290? Is it much smaller or similar to the 790?

The top of the gas tank felt wider, bottom same I suppose but with the crash bars. Never really thought of it since I'm used to the 790R. In the end both of them are shown side by side, maybe that shows some.

Dragos I must say that I feel privileged to be able to compare my bike to others. This bike was like a dream. Transfargasan type of roads with this bike and then off on your trails. The 1290SAR will chew it in crunch 😂

The screen is short like the 790R and I get a lot of buffeting at higher speeds on mine. How was the SAR? Being spaced with what looks like a small inner screen it looks like it's designed to create some laminar air flow and direct the air above your head.

The SAR wind screen was slightly better than on my 790R in both lost and highest position. It was a wind noise but not as high as on the 790R.

one account of indecent riding on open roads and one account on pure jealousy by me ! . Damn we like like it. And we went from 790R to the previous gen 1290 just to be more roadworthy. The buffeting and nervousness was too much on the 790 for our taste. (we were coming from 990adv S and 701Rally). And it loooks soooo goood!

@@Braapncamp If loto win is in the stars then yes. I find that the updates are very good done and were due also. There is just a matter of keeping a small light bike for the real off-road riding and we have a "winner" as for a travel bike the 1290 is supreme.

Hehe, perfect riding weather! The engine is ridiculous smooth on the 1290, super smooth but also powerful. QS just shift gears like cutting in butter. When I think of it I don't remember any vibrations to talk about at all.

What a beautiful machine. I think that the blue really suits the colour scheme and really changes the look of the usual white/ black/ orange . I hope this bike sells well as I would love to get an adventure bike for long distance trips but am torn between Japanese ( T12, AT) and KTM (I had an 1150 adventure and can't see myself buying a BMW again). Tut, tut, you were very bold @ 17:42 ..Safe travels in the meantime. 👍

I agree! Looks good, bjt i must say that the very orange look at the 1290 SAS looks great as well. Would not surprise me if some SAR buyers will get the SAS plastics. I would keep the blue though. Komparativ to the others i think this is a totally different animal. Fun factor is on top 💪.

Great video as always ;) Would be awesome to have a comparison to the "old" 1290 SAR. Besides the electronics they also updated the frame and tank I guess, and I wonder how it feels different?

Thanks! I can't compare since I've never ridden the previous model. But this is a totally redesigned so there is probably a lot of differences in handling. For sure some one will meek a comparison. I read at Advrider that a guy tested the old 1290 and didn't like it at all. Engine vibes, handling etc. then tested the new SAS, result was a direct purchase. This so smooth and at the same time powerful and agile what I could feel, I could not really complain on anything.

For sure a fun bike, but when I jumped on my own again I felt it definitely has all the power to smile as well. Also a far better ergonomic for trail riding. The 1290 SAR surprised me though, on how agile it is. Happy trails Eric!

@@Braapncamp Last week a relative of mine bought it and I took it for a short ride 😜😆I was between her and the bmw r1250 gsa anniversary. Slightly different motorcycles but bmw is my real love. I will probably leave her for a while later. The KTM R is something different and because I like gravel I think it will be my choice for now😜

I had a 1200GSA for many years. A Wonderfull bike on adv travels, especially in the Alps. This 1290SAR have it all, to me the choice would be easy. The specs on this one is just made for serious offroad as well or the SAS that probably are better than both at on road adv's. With that said the character of the GS is something special. Great review but I personally would not take a bike that big on anything but gravel roads. It's just too much bike in my opinion for forest roads and for getting deep in the backcountry for camping. The sleek design and the low weight of the fuel on the 790 seems to me to be the perfect compromise for an adventure bike. It has the power for the highways and the nimbellnes for off road riding. I have never truly understood who the market for a large and heavy CC bike like this for. It is dressed up like it's a true off road machine, but unless you're Chris Birch, putting luggage on this bike and taking it in muddy forest roads many kilometers away from paved roads or gravel would be way too intimidating to do solo. I'd keep the 790 or even the 390 adventure over this beast.

I would go for 890R, if you are into the S models then the 1290SAS. If you like the rough sometimes but tour a lot 1290R is the best. (my opinion)

Yes, this bike is not for dropping if not workout is on the agenda 😂. But it's definitely capable on rough stuff. However all of us know that if riding mostly the rough stuff, the weight and power could be a hand full.

So I have 2016 KTM SA T here in Chicago. I am wondering since all it has changed are the electronics on the bike (still same engine and power output) Is it worth the upgrade? And my 11k dollars ? What do you guys think?

It's a total redesign. Chassis geometry, suspension, fueltank geometry, electronic gizmos. If you plan to update, test it. If umyou are happy and will spend on adv's instead. Don't even think of testing it... 👀😂

@@Braapncamp yes. The previous R model .only can run 205km ...in Euro pay extra $ remove it. In North America and Asia markets even u pay extra that dont do it.......so many owens complain KTM shuold tell us before we bought it not after.

I bought SAR last week, in the official papers, the top speed is 235 km/h, could be still restricted. There is no option to remove any restriction, though. I don‘t have the bike, yet.

Hello Mattias thank you for this excellent review of the 1290 Adv R. There are not many of these that I can find. Most recent 2021 reviews look at only the more road oriented 1290 Adv S and do not compare and contrast the two version. Neither model is yet available in Australia and a test ride may not be possible for along time anyway. My question to you is do you find the off-road features of the R version significantly affects its on-road performance?

Thanks Dion, much appreciated. It's a tough question for me to answer since i've not tested the SAS version. But the tire sizes should differ in cornering, the higher windscreen on the SAS should affect comfort for longer rides at speed, the ACC seems missing on the SAR for now, The suspension must be better for onroad at SAS, seat is so personal so that is even not a should involved in that. But for me the 1290SAR was super performing on road. Very easy to manouver, points great in curves and great stability. It felt like the SAR suspension dives more in the front than on my 790R, It felt less nervous than my 790R, but it is road tires on the SAR and i run knobbies, that says me that the choise of tires will have a huge inpact on how it feels on road.

I wonder if the SAR version is less represented because the road adventurer will mostly choose the decadent comforts of the SAS version, whereas the serious off-roader will prefer the 790/890R off-road adventurer par excellence. I like the colour of the SAR. Also maybe its potential to go everywhere and be everything, more or less. Happy rides.

@@dionmarriott Could also be that the SAR came later to dealer in numbers or was already sold. Not all dealers have demo bikes. But I agree, the 790/890R feels a lot better for offroad or dirt road rides and are almost as good on road. To me it's an easy choice. But I can't deny the joy of that brutal power and the SAR does bad roads good with confidence.

En 890R, det är min unicorn för den typ av körning jag gör. En 690 är inte dum heller, hade en sån innan 790'n. 790 är dock lite mer hoj och gör jobbet bra både när det blir knöligare och på tur. Skall man ånga på till alperna eller långturer på krokiga vägar i Norge, me n sparsamt i våra skogar så är ju 1290 helt rätt. Sen att den är kul med den motorn på väg/grusväg går ju inte att förneka, men 790 har tillräckligt med muskler för att det skall vara sjukt kul!

Yes it hade conventional CC. The dealer could not see if the SAR could be opted or retrofited with ACC. The SAS has ACC, sure youvare aware of this.

It is much more nimble than it appears in spec figures. No competitor at all in this class. Not even close. Wonderful power delivery and chassis encurage to go more rough as well.

Jag går lite i tankarna att byta in min BMW 1250GSA mot en sån här men blir lite orolig över all elektronik, Hade en 1290 SAS innan som jag bytte in mot BMWn just av anledningen att det var mycket småkrångel på den och då främst elektroniken... Men även om jag är galet med 1250n så visst lockar denna som tusan.. :)

Jag hade ju en 1200GSA som jag hade otroligt roligt på i många år. Otroligt fina maskiner. Åk och provkör, det "kostar" ju inget 😂😜. Även GSA hade ju sina typfel, tankmätaren, bränslepumpsregulatorn bl.a. Jag tänkte inte så mycket på sådant så länge det inte är fel som man blir strandad av. SAS är nog en riktigt fin alpracer. Jag skulle dock ha valt SAR pga att den är körduglig i skogen.

Yes indeed and that is remarkable for this bike, but also say alot of what KTM is aiming for. Push it to the limit and as an active rider that appeals more than solid endurance. I know what i like 😁

I currently have the 2018 Model R, and on this model I would have liked it to come with CARPLAY, electronic suspensions, and adaptive radar. Not doing it I think is a mistake. What do you think?

I friend said, the ACC radar may not like to much offroad or gravelstoned be thrown on it 😂👀. I'm not sure about that. I think that all gizmos except electronic suspension would be nice to have. I rather like the suspension as it is for the SAR. But for the SAS it's perfect. But sure why not offer all the goodies and let the buyer decide.

Electronic suspension is overrated (you lose the fine tuning ability you get with manual adjustments and it's expensive to service). The R suspension is so good that once you have it set up you don't really need to do much adjusting. Adaptive cruise would be nice but is that a reason to upgrade?

Ca 30Kg seems to be the difference. You definitely feel the difference, but the 1290SAR is the coolest big bike I have ever ridden, felt nimble in it's class.

Great bike that I was going to give a serious look...then I read specs. of a seat height in excess of 35 inches. Too tall for me. Multistrada 1260 maybe.

Before you decide, try to get a chance to sit on one. The SAR felt alot lower than my 790R. I was really comfy with planted foots on ground at the 1290SAR. The Multistrada is closer to the 1290SAS? And that is even lower than SAR. With that said, the Multistrada looks fab and must be an Alp serpentine killer, unfortunately i have never tried one.

Hey Davinder, i'm out hiking right now 👌i have both tents an conventional hammocks. The Draumr is of its owm kind since you are sleeping on a pad, no condensation like it could be in tents. I borreal areas it's the best there is. Between the 5.0 an UL it's a matter of weight. If you are hiking/backpacking alot, the UL wheights under 2Kg as complete set, that really great. After testing this weekend i'm impressed. For random use and avride i would recommend the 5.0, Fjøl UL and Skjold 10 UL as a kit. That is the best kit that could be combined for weight and robustness. I will make a video in a few days, with at least views.

It is a decision for sure. As tents i have Hillebergs in different shapes. I compare Amok hammocks to these. Not other hammocks. This to it's cpmfort next to none compated to hammocks. In the price tou get a top end matress as well. This is something that jas to be added on top of a tent purchase. However it is definately an investment. A good tving is the very supportive and easy procedure to sentida it back if you're not happy.

For that thr 890 is great! The 890 is a bike good for all day riding on tarmac or gravel with the big plus that it also does great at rougher trails to the extent where a enduro does better.

I currently ride the 690 enduro 2019, and I am so tempted by the 790/890 and not at least the 1290 r. But I try to tell myself that as long as I ride without passanger theres no reason to change. And maybe theres stuff I can do on the 690 that I will struggle to do on the bigger ones. I know you had the 690 before, so whats your opinion?

I ended up with the 701E 2021 and I have to say that I love that bike. Tested the 890ADR and the 1290SAR but I didn't like the 890 and the 1290SAR is too expensive. The 701E really is an dual sport, first I felt it was a pain to ride it on the highway but now I am used to it and I can say that compared to my previous tenere 700 this is a real offrad bike.

I‘d like the new 1290R also - as my 3d KTM (Nr. 1: 790 R Rally, Nr. 2: EXC 350 6days Chile). But what to do with it - exzept admiring design and power? Unfortunately my bikes have to be able to get me to the “lost lake” and further in the south of Tunisia, as well over tricky single trails in the Alpes or Atlas. The 790 R Rallye manages to stay there with EXCs and consorts. The 1290R couldn’t - except maybe Chris would ever join one of my travels (wuestenfahrer.com).

Thanks for your comment Thomas, with the 790RR you do not need a beast like this for the adventures you are mentioning. Except from enjoying the serpentines in the Alps. Great combo with the EXC👍. I decided 2 years ago to go from 2 bikes to 1 and the 790R ticked all my boxes for only have one bike for adventures, and it does it d*mn good. But for sure the 1290 SAR was a fun bike to twist, so now we have done that 👌😜. Happy trails Thomas!

A wonderful bike that has it all, but I was happy swinging the leg over mine on the way home. The 790/890 has enough power and feel closer to an enduro, and that's what we like 💪👍

Better he runs the battery out. My 2014 starter is week . Maybe the 1290 starter will be stronger

I was worried about the battery status before it cranked up, i the power on position on along time before starting the machine. Better be careful with bikes that are just unboxed 😜.

Hey, never been interested in the Busa so i can't advice on that one. For me it's clear that a Adv bike is more versatile and in that way more fun. But we could surely agree on that the 1290SAS or SAR is as close as an adv bike can get to a Busa ☝️😂. I think it's about 20K€.

Yes i will! Bought it very late last year so i need more time with it to make any experienced comclusions. But so far it's the best jaket i have had and suits me well. Rock solid, well ventilated and totally waterproof. I really needed a new jacket even if the camo jacket i had before seeved me well. The Basilisk is in a totally other leage though.

Nope, i promise. The feeling when I jumped up on my 790R was like coming home. I don't need more power or weight. But I must say, this bike is agile and probably it will hands down win those "Alp bike contests". Ride serpentines in the alps and some double and single tracks now and then.

Thanks, unfortunately I can't help You but others should! There must have been many deliveries by now. Chris Birch has great content with cool riding and a very honest and down to earth review on the 1290SAR. Even compared to the 790/890 Adv R. This from a pro perspective, I'm just the average Swede 😂💪

😂 sometimes i get bored of thes type of videos as well. But they stay strct to the protocol and numbers, sure this is great info. But when You've seen one then You are done. I'm actually surprised that there aren't many owners videos out yet. However a really nice bike and in my eyes the most do it all bike out there of the big bikes. The competitors are not as do it all for the average rider. Cheers my advriding friend!
