#bookishpodcast #booktube
Welcome to the 44th episode of Chatting with Nutts! My guest this episode of Chatting With Nutts is none other than the author of 'Memory, Sorrow, Thorn', Bobby Dollar, Last King of Osten Ard, Shadowmarch, and many other wonderful works in the science fiction/fantasy genre: Tad Williams! Tad Williams has become on of my favorite authors over the last few years and it was honor to interview him here on the channel.

I've read many, many excellent Fantasy series over the years, maybe about 40 or 50, but for me there are 4 that stand head and shoulders above the rest as the best of the best - Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time, The Realm of the Elderlings and Memory Sorrow and Thorn. Thank you Tad. (I'd put Otherland in there too if it was fantasy!)

This was great! Wish I could’ve watched it all live/in one sitting. Tad seems like a wonderful dude, and I loved when he mentioned the connection a reader feels to an author. I’ve never really thought about it, but it’s fun to consider what it must be like as an author to have strangers come up to you who feel like you’re already friends.

Jimmy, This was one of the best chats/interviews I have seen with an author, in my humble opinion. What a nice guy, filled with wisdom about the craft and reading. The beautiful thing about book tube and it's less formal, long form nature is watching a reader/presenter who's long talked about their favorite author, one day instantly develop casual banter and friendship with said author. Just a great thing about the internet in general really. I'll certainly try out Tad soon, probably starting with Tailchaser's Song.

LOTR and Gormenghast are the GOATs for me. MST was written as an ode to these while simultaneously incorporating the novel elements from Mr Williams' imagination. MST has always been its own thing for me. In The Last King of Osten Ard, it is almost like a conversation with ASOIAF while again incorporating Mr Williams' own worldbuilding. Will be very interested to see what you think of The Last King of Osten Ard - are you planning to start the series in 2023?

Great part of discussion - try something to read completely different, stretch your preferences, find fresh insights and then maybe you’ll look at things differently. It even helps me in my work. I always try to study other things besides the basics that I’m used to. Interesting bit from Tad about being wary of reading too much of the genre you're writing in, but his explanation makes sense. I have held a similar view myself, but instead of avoiding the genre it's structured story writing advice. When it comes to things like writing techniques and lessons on the English language/grammar itself, I'll gladly take those. Those are necessary tools. But I think when it comes to actually conceptualizing a story, I would much rather go with my gut and my vast array of exposure to stories of every medium throughout my life, to limit what Tad would call an "incestuous" story that is just an imitator. I'm glad to see an established author express a sentiment that follows similar logic even if it's not the exact same view.
