Except this is better because Preston Jacobs can’t seem to do a single stream without bringing his leftist woke politics into a discussion that should be completely removed from real world current day politics - but as he is literally a deep state leech on the federal government dole, it’s not surprising.

Nice. I think it's also possibly obvious to look to stories like The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan and especially the Elric Saga by Michael Moorcock in which George took inspiration. For instance, the whole Azor Ahai prophecy, as well as Perrin and Bran's similarities of controlling and befriending wolves, and the importance of dreams in all three series. Also, a weak comparison: Whitecloaks in WoT and Goldcloaks are slightly similar. But mainly, you see a lot of the lore on the Valyrian side have startling similarities to the Melnibonéan island and the rule of the Melnibonéan dragon rider sorcerers. Both Valyria and Melniboné are viewed as once mighty island empires that have fallen from grace. Both are dragon riding sorcerer societies with propensities for incest and cruelty, with access to Chaotic magics. The Valyrians are nearly always pale skinned and fair haired, based off of Elric's albinism. Furthermore the sword Darkfyre and Bloodraven who wields it bear many similarities to Elric and his blade. It's also important to note that Moorcock and Martin were/are good friends, the name "Stormbringer", Elric's black, soul-stealing blade, being shouted in the show, during Joffry's wedding when he is naming his Valyrian steel blade. (Valyrian steel is also black in the books, similar in colour to Stormbringer and Mornblade.) I really like both series, the lore of each being highly distinct and amazing in their own rights. I just think it's interesting to note possible similarities.)

I just finished The Dragonbone Chair. Really loved it despite the show start. Finished quite well, indeed. Also, recently finished A Storm of Swords, book 3 in A Song of Ice and Fire. Both series are very good and I'm looking forward the the next book in both series. Loved your video. Well, except for the minutes of blank screen while you read passages.

Nice video! I love your narration and choice of quotes and illustration. Look forward to your further thoughts. Also, if you continue with the new books the Last King ones are specifically Williams saying he loved how GRRM took some concepts from his work and ran with them to a new original story and wanted to do something similar with GRRM's concepts, so you could do a reverse comparison video. The biggest thing that comes to mind in terms of ASOIAF comparison in MST is Towser saying "All men must die" like 5 pages in. There's also the red comet in the sky/the star. Also, once you reach the prologue of Green Angel Tower there are even bigger parallels to Stannis' storyline. I also recall a conversation in Green Angel Tower that seems to be the basis for GRRM's take on knights and nobles and is similar to one Jamie has in flashback to his youth during A Storm of Swords (it's about honor and stories vs. reality).

Sidhe (if that's the word) is generally pronounced "Shee", like the pronoun. It is more accurately (to the Gaelic language it comes from) pronounced like "Sheath", but with a *very* light "th" sound on the end. Sort of like how the "s" sound in "These" is lighter than the one in "Cease", if that makes sense. Heh.

I came to the conclusion years ago that George RR Martin read the late 1980's New York Times #1 Best-seller "Pillars of the Earth's by Ken Follet prior to beginning to compose his aSoI&F book series in the early 1990's. Jon Stewart (Snow) meet your inspiration Jack Builder the protagonist from "Pillars of the Earth".. It feeds the Brandon + Asahara = Jon theorists and the mysterious shipwreck that claimed the lives of Robert Baratheon's noble parents. Just check it out!!

@@randominternetguyoffical No problem. I was once a big B+A=J guy so when I saw "Pillars of the Earth" on Starz (also available on KZbin) the scene of Jack Builder's conception raised a red flag for me. Jon Steward (Jon Snow) vs Jack Builder was the question for me and then Lord Varys was there in the Red Keep at the time too if needed to facilitate the secret lover's tryst of Brandon and Asahara down in the Black Cells as the dungeon master Rugen. It was curious to me. Asahara wanted Lord Varys to free her secret paramour but Lord Varys answered " When you look at me . . . do you see a hero?". Lord Varys loves collecting favors from prominent people like the most desirable young woman in the Realm so the most he was willing to do was sneak her in so she could give Brandon his "last meal" on the eve of his execution as he was chained to the wall by his ankle just like how Jack Builder was conceived in "Pillars of the Earth".

I think at some points, "inspired" is a generous term.

I think homage is what GRRM intended at many times in his work, like very clearly directly referring a previous work but within his own universe. Certainly he was very intentional in the parallels and from what I've seen both authors enjoy each others writings. If I were Williams I would be flattered that GRRM got so much out of my work. Hopefully it will lead to some interest for film adaptations too cuz like it would be dope to see tDBC become a series either of films or of episodes.
@Redundant_underscore

@@randominternetguyoffical - I may be biased because of my affection for MSAT, but the similarities at times are so blatant that I feel Martin should have given Williams an acknowledgement in ASOIAF, if he didn't.

@@Redundant_underscore You could have a point there I know GRRM has done a lot of pushing to get eyes on his friends work in recent years, like to the point of angering fans cuz they think he's putting off his books lol But I wonder if he's that close to Williams? I suppose he could drop the MSAT name more in general tho maybe? Like put out that the books exist in interviews more?
@ZoidbergCZ
@ZoidbergCZ Жыл бұрын
@@randominternetguyoffical It depends where one is willing to draw a line. All artists essentially syncretise what they know and Martin is one of those who show sources of their inspiration very obviously. For example, once upon a time there was a Croatian guy on the official ASOIAF forum called Lujo who was mocking-to-insulting Martin on the grounds how much influence of Elric is in his text and how supposedly character of Tyrion is so obvious expy of Miles VorKosigan from VorKosigan saga and Catelyn is based on Miles´ mother Cordelia. I talked to him and said how if you are using this logic, you might also come to conclusion that Euron Greyjoy might be read as expy of "On Stranger Tides " villains and he answered me with statement closed by words "Its just like I said. Martin decided to "homage" to his favorite stuff which also happens to be everebody else´s favorite stuff, because it is classic."

@@randominternetguyoffical Well the 17 year gap between books and horrible reception the final novel got obviously (just kidding I hope). But in seriousness, probably just the POV and narrative style. It has "main" characters, but no main character, and it hops around from place to place, in a world that feels real and interconnected. Like how in ASOIAF, there might be a boat in Braavos, that's later in Maidenpool, little things like that. Basically it feels like ASOIAF, less magic, in the "real" world but takes place over decades. Although the first 4 novels are close together like ASOIAF
