My son is in 4th grade but we are doing a customized version of HBL B+C this year. We love it! Homer Price was a favorite.

Writing is so tricky. I don't feel like I have a good grasp on teaching it, and my oldest is in 6th grade. I might outsource it next year. I love that you talked about attitude with your 2nd grader. My daughter of the same age complains every day, and your approach is so positive!

My son 6 LOVES Dragon Masters. He has read through all 22 twice. I searched for a couple of months for similar books that would keep his attention and age appropriate since he is an advanced reader. He recently start The Last Firehawk and he is just as obsessed. Such good books. 😊

I love using Abeka Phonics right now in kindergarten and 1st grade, and next year for 2nd grade... but i am definitely looking ahead and am considering switching to a Charlotte Mason literature approach in 2 years for 3rd grade and up. Your switch is inspiring me! Looking forward to your updates! 😊

The Time Traveler book is so fun. With my preschoolers, I also feel like numbers are easier than vowel sounds.

I love these videos! I love the change of direction for you and that you feel like you have more of a handle on the LA for your oldest son. For me, LA is always the most difficult one to wrap my head around and teach. Math is so much more straight forward! We are doing well so far! We started in July, so we have 12 weeks under our belt. My 6 yo daughter is chugging along with AAR 2, and doing wonderful. We slowed it down a lot and spread the lessons out over 3-4 days. We went through AAR 1 very fast last year, and my daughter requested shorter reading lessons. But now she is enjoying it. Singapore math is going well-ish. It's a lot sometimes. I wish it was more scripted. But I feel like I am starting to get used to the way it teaches, it feels less overwhelming for us both. Loving lots of picture books as always. My pre-Ker is basically his big sister's shadow and took off with reading CVC words. I think he might be ready to start AAR 1 soon actually. Earlier than I planned, but he is constantly wanting to read to me. So far, everything this year has been working pretty well. But I do feel like I am at my capacity as a teacher.

I have a first grader doing AAR 2 and Singapore math (Dimensions) as well. I found the same thing with the AAR1 to 2 switch. We spend more days on a lesson now than we did last year. But, my SIL who has used level 3 told me at some point with her kids it just clicked (toward the end of level 2 approx) and they took off. Then it went faster again. That was encouraging to me!! I hope it encourages you too! ❤

Are most of the books you talked about from your HBL core or mostly outside sources?
@sciencemama2 жыл бұрын
I would say it is about half and half :)

Do you know how the new language curriculum compare to First Language Lessons? I can't remember if you have done First Language Lessons?
@sciencemama2 жыл бұрын
I only used First Language Lesson for about half a year - but I would say they are pretty different.

I had know idea there were I Survive graphic novels! So cool! I know you aren’t doing IEW but I recommend that you listen to Andrew Pudewa. He talks a ton about how there is no such thing as helping kids too much. They will eventually get it and will eventually take the reigns and say, “No, I got this!”

Also, I think you might like Write Shop.

Anyway, I love your approach and think both Andrew Pudewa and Write Shop both support how you’re teaching.

Thank you! IEW was on my list - but I will check out Write Shop too :)

The "we" effort is discussed in the Brave Learner. Julie called it collaboration. I suggest you read the book! So insightful in terms of what we as parents can do to set our kids up for success ❤
