Should the elbows be straight above the wrists or can they be a little behind or in front?

Well it all depends on your intention. Not everyone will have the strength to hold the posture with the elbows directly over the wrists - that a lot more body weight for the wrists and upper arms/shoulders to handle. I suggest working up to it. Elbows behind the wrist will be less weight because it’s now leaning the weight into the feet. Allows pass the wrist is a lot of weight and requires greater wrist flexibility, this is something I practice but after years of strengthening my wrists to be able to handle that extreme angle of hyper extension
