Funny enough, the author of death note admitted they actually had to have Naomi do dumb shit because he realized she was to fucking good at her job, which is why light got so lucky just running into her and getting her to talk. The author admitted he outright had to plot armour light through Naomi because he had no realistic way for light to survive her.

And I believe it. If you see the way she was operating and the clues she was piecing up and the care she was taking with exposing her name, Naomi could've easily been the protagonist of her own story! The author wrote shoddy as a real and competent FBI agent! _Which forced him to appeal to plot armor to save his protagonist from being stopped too early in the story._ A self-sabotage trap that I'm sure many authors can probably relate to. Writing a secondary character SO GOOD, that they logically would've ended your story way before you actually intended. 😅

Light's fate was sealed the moment he accepted the Death Note. Ryuk told him from the start that he'd be the one to take Light's life in the end. The fact that Light thought of himself as God when he was merely wielding a basic tool of an actual death god, who was just letting him do so for fun, shows how deluded Light had become. He only lived for as long as he did because Ryuk found the whole thing amusing; he could have ended Light's life at any moment. The whole series was Light thinking himself superior to everyone. Meanwhile, Ryuk was just humoring him for the lulz, until he grew bored of Light and offed him.

Whoever was driving that car wouldn't presumably have happily kept accelerating for some 20 seconds after seeing someone fall on the road under normal circumstances. Light could have written the dude's cause of death as "shot by an undercover investigator who reveals his badge and gun before opening fire" and that's what would have happened, Light just wasn't all that smart about how much power over the surrounding people to the target the Death Note gave back then.

So I imagine it would have needed to find someone in range who would be distracted and be willing to hit and run if they got in an accident. Maybe the hijacker would have died of a heart attack 40 seconds after Light wrote his name if Penbar would never have revealed his information in that scenario, and Light would have needed a new plan.

I know this is probably an overgeneralization, but I feel like he didn't use specific causes of death often, I think we're meant to believe that it was a rarity, mainly used in the times when he was trying to screw with l (although I guess I'm just eager to say that because if he mostly wrote down just people's names, the calculations were done that at a conservative estimate he killed 142,000 people on his own, and I think the total death count between all of the iterations of kira was somewhere in the range of 300,000)

I agree. Light seemed to be at L’s level, BUT, that was because he WAS Kira, so of course Light seemed to know just as much as L when it came to the Kira case. So the only parts of Light where we could TRULY see how genius he was (without basing it on his academic record) was by his strategic planning HUNDREDS OF STEPS AHEAD and how accurate it was. L is not the protagonist. He is the antagonist. Light is the protagonist because he’s the very main character and we are mainly looking at his journey. An antagonist is again the protagonist which makes L the antagonist.

One thing they dont touch on, everybody light manipulated in using the deathnote had their afterlife stolen from them as you cannot go to heaven or hell after using it

I don’t remember if it was confirmed in the anime, but in the manga, Light manages to deduce that there is no such thing as heaven or hell. The conversation he had with Ryuk about it was originally heavily mistranslated and readers thought that death note users went to a place called ‘Mu’ when they died, which is the Japanese word for nothing. In the world of Death Note, there is no afterlife at all. Light didn’t lose his chance at heaven or hell, no one has one. In the manga, Light takes immense satisfaction at being able to figure it out as Ryuk was trying to scare him with the thought of missing out on the afterlife.
