Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is how you should not convert a school bus. Buses are earthquake on wheels, so they shouldn't have put drywall in it, which cracks early. That is just one of many things incorrectly done on this build. They built it like a house, and you should build a skoolie more like a boat.

I'm genuinely curious about two things: The added weight of the drywall and tile in comparison to other materials more commonly used in RV builds - usually people avoid these due to the weight cost - and the durability of these materials after putting some miles on the vehicle. Flex and vibration are notorious enemies of tile and drywall, as well as doors and windows made for homes instead of RVs. I genuinely wish you well on this, but if the experience of other schoolie builders means anything, you may be presented with some unforseen challenges.

Yeah the build is just throwing money out the window. You can have a real house with 3 accomplished builders and all the money they put into that bus. This bus must be parked somewhere and LEFT on the ground, because all those tiles are gonna crack if you'll be doing actual driving. You can't stand in the bedroom. You can't stand in the office. The couch can't fit 2 people. There's very little storage. Its impractical and overpriced but its cool and it makes money as content.

Looks absolutely sick and best ending ever to a video. My two concerns (1) obviously the weight added in terms of safety. Like that thing weighs at least 5x its designed weight and how the bus frame can hold, (2) is that you installed four large batteries right below where you sleep. Hopefully nothing ever goes wrong, but it’s literally like sleeping around gas cans. If something goes wrong and battery fire starts. It burn hot and fast quick.

the weight shouldn't be an issue. school buses can handle a lot more weight than you think. i'd give it a solid 20k lbs in cargo weight. the batteries, yes, don't know why he put them under his bed, should've been on the other side near nothing else very valuable.
@MrJoshuaAwesome

Yeah, I thought about that for a moment but then I realized that school buses are designed to have 50 to 60 kids. That's easily 6,000 or more pounds. Plus the weight of the chairs that they removed. I'm guessing that it's semi similar. Also they removed a lot more glass. I think they're probably okay but I was very curious on the weight before and after.

And, tile on the stairs says slip and fall hazard to me with big red letters. All of the batteries could pose a fire hazard … sorry, but yes. And, the passenger seating in the cab … don’t get me started … LOL. I hope you never get stopped. Again, you have created a great little space to park and live in , but not drive around. Other than the safety concerns, you guys did a great job. It looks beautiful.

@Avetho 3 ай бұрын
The weight is just fine, a bus of this size, being a full-size school bus, can take a maximum vehicle weight of 36000 pounds, and this thing is almost certainly under 16 tons. That rating is what the bus is rated to suffer over its lifespan routinely without issue, and even go over that if its ever needed. The batteries are also LiFePO4, which only emits at worst a candle flame when impaled by a long nail, its nowhere near as dangerous as Tesla's NMC battery packs which explode with white flames within two seconds of puncturing and heat up past 650 Celsius in the process, but even so yeah some heat shielding and fireproofing around the batteries themselves would be a very good improvement. But otherwise, its all very good and the only real improvement beyond the shielding that needs to be put around the batteries (and the cabin passenger seat since I imagine this lovey-dovey couple wants to be beside each other on any long drives) is refitting the shock absorbers to be softer and adding solar panels that can be rotated out to clear the roof deck space.

Very nice job. I was a truck and bus mechanic for 45 years, and I was very impressed with your creativity and work. If you don't mind me asking a few questions. 1. What was your GVWR when completed? 2. With the flex of the vehicle, are you concerned with your tile cracking? Did you do anything special to prevent it? 3. Like cabinets and drawers, did you install special catches to prevent them from opening when driving? 4. Were the items you used like electrical, etc. meet FMVSS? 5. While I liked your roof raise, I think I would have put some structure bracing so your panels did not have some of the ripples, but that was just me. I give you 95% on overall job young man. I would be interested in knowing after you have driven it for a while if you have had any structural flexing that has caused you any issues? I worked building Ambulances years ago and when we cut the tops out of the Ford van to put the fiberglass raised roof we had to do some actual supporting to compensate for flexing and when we relocated the seat belt mounts when we put the header wall in we had to do so special testing to mount seat belts. Of 😢 were considered a manufacturer and in order to get Ford to sign off we had to meet certain criteria. We were using Ford chassis that were designed by Ford to be converted into ambulances. One last thing I'll share with you. We ran Leece Naville alternators. 200 Amp systems, and we would take the diodes out of the case and use Delco diode rectifiers out of 100 Amp altinaters, wired in parallel and remotely, mounted them in the grill for cooling. This would give us great cooling and a bullet-proof charging system even at idle. That is only an option should you have a problem keeping those batteries charged up for your electrical system. I would be glad to give you more in-depth info if you DM provided you need it. Overall, I think you did a great job, young man, and what an awesome project for you and your dad and friends to do. All the best wishes to you, and congratulations on the engagement. May you have many years together. Have a blessed day.

Wiring, burn rates, crinkle points, etc. However, the creativity was great, and the overall quality of work was nice, and the commentary between friends and family was priceless.

every bus renovation ive seen has ended up looking nice, but also cramped and unliveable. this one however, is the best one i’ve ever been that actually seems spacious

Never seen one of your videos. So maybe this is explained in other videos: Weight before, weight after? Suspension changes? Dry wall in a moving shaking vehicle? Did it crack ? Same question about the tiles. Passenger seat up front, safety wise not so good for long trips. Was there no room for a second seat? Gas mileage now vs before? Read this in a comment as well about the tanks. Wood will rot fast and the tanks will be heavy. My trailer has a thick tarp type thing on the bottom. Might need something there. Would love to see a follow up about all of this. Also mentioned in another comment, where’s the money for this coming from?! Congrats, so much work went into this. Lots of talent there!

This video is so wholesome. It’s such an awesome build and shows just how far you’ve come with your builds, from small bike campers to now a bus home! Congrats on the proposal. Hoping we can maybe see a “Luxury Bus Life” series in the future?

I love the enthusiasm but plz remember you aren’t building a house or even a stationary structure. There are multiple reasons you don’t see Sheetrock or solid core wire in RVs or boats. The biggest being the constant movement of everything. Stranded wire with crimp connections is for safety. The tile may stand a chance with the kerdi backer but I see lots of cracked Sheetrock in your future. Your center of gravity would be a major concern as well. Good luck though, sorry for the negative remarks

I was wondering about the drywall. That stuff cracks if there is the slightest flex in a house.

I was thinking of the flexibility of household windows and doors. I’ve remodeled old RVs and you also have to be careful about how everything inside is balanced
@dgpsf
@dgpsf 3 ай бұрын
@alparker2616 Yeah, balance with the fridge and washer/dryer on one side and nothing opposite them. Also with that 200 gallon blackwater tank running in line and not transverse, I think, with the fresh water tank and grey water tank on the opposite side, fresh will start out full. So the weight of 100 gallons of water all on one side, with nothing opposite. I hope that's not the same side with the appliances. Otherwise I'm surprised this thing didn't just tip over! Besides the issues pointed out in this thread though, at least it looks really nice and was built with care.

LiFePO4, so not as safe as gel-cell Lead Acid, but far, far safer than the batteries used in Tesla vehicles and other EVs like Rivian, which are NMC. At least unlike NMC, LiFePO4 can be punctured by a nail and only have a small candle flame coming out of it at worst or more likely dark acrid smoke, NMC explodes into white flames and the battery itself goes up to over 650 degrees C when punctured while the highest a LiFePO4 reaches is about 110 or just over boiling at the peak of its internal discharge. A lead acid though just kinda does nothing. Although, if these LiFePO4 are "semi-solid-state" then they won't exceed 25 Celsius when punctured, they'll just begin slowly warming themselves as their voltage starts to drop over the course of an hour or more to zero, but I imagine they'd get really hot if you tried to recharge a punctured semi-solid-state LiFePO4.
