I'm genuinely curious about two things: The added weight of the drywall and tile in comparison to other materials more commonly used in RV builds - usually people avoid these due to the weight cost - and the durability of these materials after putting some miles on the vehicle. Flex and vibration are notorious enemies of tile and drywall, as well as doors and windows made for homes instead of RVs. I genuinely wish you well on this, but if the experience of other schoolie builders means anything, you may be presented with some unforseen challenges.

Looks absolutely sick and best ending ever to a video. My two concerns (1) obviously the weight added in terms of safety. Like that thing weighs at least 5x its designed weight and how the bus frame can hold, (2) is that you installed four large batteries right below where you sleep. Hopefully nothing ever goes wrong, but it’s literally like sleeping around gas cans. If something goes wrong and battery fire starts. It burn hot and fast quick.
@sophiapriest

Omg I was thinking the same thing with the batteries and also was surprised they didn't use solar (I was like "well where is the solar panel gonna go?" and they never put one) .... the weight shouldn't be an issue. school buses can handle a lot more weight than you think. i'd give it a solid 20k lbs in cargo weight. the batteries, yes, don't know why he put them under his bed, should've been on the other side near nothing else very valuable.
@MrJoshuaAwesome
@MrJoshuaAwesome Ай бұрын
Yeah, I thought about that for a moment but then I realized that school buses are designed to have 50 to 60 kids. That's easily 6,000 or more pounds. Plus the weight of the chairs that they removed. I'm guessing that it's semi similar. Also they removed a lot more glass. I think they're probably okay but I was very curious on the weight before and after.

Very nice job. I was a truck and bus mechanic for 45 years, and I was very impressed with your creativity and work. If you don't mind me asking a few questions. 1. What was your GVWR when completed? 2. With the flex of the vehicle, are you concerned with your tile cracking? Did you do anything special to prevent it? 3. Like cabinets and drawers, did you install special catches to prevent them from opening when driving? 4. Were the items you used like electrical, etc. meet FMVSS? 5. While I liked your roof raise, I think I would have put some structure bracing so your panels did not have some of the ripples, but that was just me. I give you 95% on overall job young man. I would be interested in knowing after you have driven it for a while if you have had any structural flexing that has caused you any issues? I worked building Ambulances years ago and when we cut the tops out of the Ford van to put the fiberglass raised roof we had to do some actual supporting to compensate for flexing and when we relocated the seat belt mounts when we put the header wall in we had to do so special testing to mount seat belts. Of 😢 were considered a manufacturer and in order to get Ford to sign off we had to meet certain criteria. We were using Ford chassis that were designed by Ford to be converted into ambulances. One last thing I'll share with you. We ran Leece Naville alternators. 200 Amp systems, and we would take the diodes out of the case and use Delco diode rectifiers out of 100 Amp altinaters, wired in parallel and remotely, mounted them in the grill for cooling. This would give us great cooling and a bullet-proof charging system even at idle. That is only an option should you have a problem keeping those batteries charged up for your electrical system. I would be glad to give you more in-depth info if you DM provided you need it. Overall, I think you did a great job, young man, and what an awesome project for you and your dad and friends to do. All the best wishes to you, and congratulations on the engagement. May you have many years together. Have a blessed day.

@droogiesouls8635 I am more concerned about an accident and what may happen. Having been involved in the manufacture of ambulances, trailers, and other things, one of the most discussed with engineers and corporate litagaters was liability. So of the testing we had to go thru was extensive. Not to be a Debbie downer. I am concerned about some things. I wonder if the company who insured it had any concerns. Wiring, burn rates, crinkle points, etc. However, the creativity was great, and the overall quality of work was nice, and the commentary between friends and family was priceless.

Your generation has carved out a notch, and your creativity is awesome. I wish I understood more about it, but for me, it's a lot of fun watching young individuals like yourself expressing ideas and ingenuity. I am by no means being critical. My expertise revolved around safety, liability and trying to identify anything that might be hazardous. Thank you for the feed back, keep up your creativity. Sincerely

@@johndavis318 These are all very valid concerns John. If you look when the leave the house the added panels have all distorted from their original install and any coach master would physically cringe watching the making of and point out the 1000 errors made in building it. All of the money used to build it would have been better suited to be spent at a coach builders built to regulatory spec with the proper procedure and materials 100p. This is a pimp my ride of campers and I imagine Tavarish will buy it in a few years to rebuild it to proper spec for content farming.

Yeah the build is just throwing money out the window. You can have a real house with 3 accomplished builders and all the money they put into that bus. This bus must be parked somewhere and LEFT on the ground, because all those tiles are gonna crack if you'll be doing actual driving. You can't stand in the bedroom. You can't stand in the office. The couch can't fit 2 people. There's very little storage. Its impractical and overpriced but its cool and it makes money as content.

And, the passenger seating in the cab … don’t get me started … LOL. I hope you never get stopped. Again, you have created a great little space to park and live in , but not drive around. The weight is just fine, a bus of this size, being a full-size school bus, can take a maximum vehicle weight of 36000 pounds, and this thing is almost certainly under 16 tons. That rating is what the bus is rated to suffer over its lifespan routinely without issue, and even go over that if its ever needed. The batteries are also LiFePO4, which only emits at worst a candle flame when impaled by a long nail, its nowhere near as dangerous as Tesla's NMC battery packs which explode with white flames within two seconds of puncturing and heat up past 650 Celsius in the process, but even so yeah some heat shielding and fireproofing around the batteries themselves would be a very good improvement. But otherwise, its all very good and the only real improvement beyond the shielding that needs to be put around the batteries (and the cabin passenger seat since I imagine this lovey-dovey couple wants to be beside each other on any long drives) is refitting the shock absorbers to be softer and adding solar panels that can be rotated out to clear the roof deck space.

dont mind if i ask 1. Is there a means to reach the engine compartment? If not, how would one go about performing substantial repairs and oil changes on the bus? 2.Can the engine truly handle the load that you have added to the bus? Some engines were only designed to handle a particular amount of weight, and they would not be able to handle it when the bus was going up or down a hill.The bus also had trouble stopping when there was more weight on it. I'm curious because it seems like a dream come true for anyone who has ever desired to live this way. Or you're planning to stay in one area permanently near the beach as u mention, so you won't travel much.

You obviously put your heart and soul into this build. But while I’m no expert, I’m terrified for you and your beautiful girl. Lots of things about it are extremely concerning. The tremendous weight, the rigid tiles, the potential cracking drywall, the massive added weight from the water tanks held up by wooden beams, the very serious electrical hazard right underneath your bed, and your fiancées seatbelt won’t hold in crash. Then the issues of braking make this house on wheels a death trap for you or someone else. Who’s going to insure it? If it goes up in flames is it going to be a total financial loss? If someone else is hurt you could be in debt for years and/or face criminal charges. Even as a tiny home I don’t think you’ll be able to get insurance. That’s what has happened to a lot of the tiny homes that people built themselves. They can’t live in them because of local building codes. I totally wish you the best but I’m honestly scared for you. I apologize to anyone that I have offended with what I’m saying.

I'm a helicopter flight nurse & firefighter paramedic with one of the busiest shock trauma units in the US, my top highway horror stories involve builds like these. There is a REASON big RV's cost a lot, they are safe. You have ZERO steel frame reinforcements. Residential grade doors, windows and 2x4's are *_not designed_* to handle the torsion & G forces of a crash. You have ZERO fire protection - not even a fire alarm - and your sulphuric acid ‘battery bed’ & couch are a flammable nightmare. Anyone "just chillin" on the couch or the bed is just another 150lb+ projectile waiting to be ejected. And look, it's not necessarily you or your driving, it's everyone else trying to get around you. Find a plot of land, park it, and live in it until you can build back better. I'm shocked you got this licensed.

@@hsko8007 Yeah, the doors, the lack of safety put into making sure appliances don't move around and the battery placement is a nightmare. Also not sure about the steel frame, as the welded it onto a old one that isn't rated to hold that roof at all. You needed it on the inside going from the frame to the top instead, as now it's hold up on the outside onto the old pilars that are then connected to the base frame, that seems unsafe.

My husband bought a shed/cabin shell for me, and completely finished out the entire interior. Kitchen, bathroom, 2 lofts with beds, and daybed on ground floor. The interior walls/ceiling are all wood, and smells as good as it looks! I can’t tell you how much all his work meant to me. It’s one of the nicest gifts he’s ever given me! I’m sure your gf/fiance will feel the same. 💕

I love the enthusiasm but plz remember you aren’t building a house or even a stationary structure. There are multiple reasons you don’t see Sheetrock or solid core wire in RVs or boats. The biggest being the constant movement of everything. Stranded wire with crimp connections is for safety. The tile may stand a chance with the kerdi backer but I see lots of cracked Sheetrock in your future. Your center of gravity would be a major concern as well. Good luck though, sorry for the negative remarks

@dgpsf

@alparker2616 Yeah, balance with the fridge and washer/dryer on one side and nothing opposite them. Also with that 200 gallon blackwater tank running in line and not transverse, I think, with the fresh water tank and grey water tank on the opposite side, fresh will start out full. So the weight of 100 gallons of water all on one side, with nothing opposite. I hope that's not the same side with the appliances. Otherwise I'm surprised this thing didn't just tip over! Besides the issues pointed out in this thread though, at least it looks really nice and was built with care.

Using wood to hold in your water tanks seems like an absolutely horrible idea… all the weight of the water plus the eventual deterioration of the wood due to being exposed to the elements (even though it’s treated it will deteriorate) will result in catastrophic failure.

I've converted dozens of buses since 2017. This is horrible. 1: OSB floors are heavy and will fall apart when moisture hits it- and it will. 2: the metal body contracts a ton with weather changes and your doors/windows are screwed- the door will be stuck shut on a hot day, the windows will break on a cold day as the ribs flex. 3. You didn't use PT wood underneath and it will rot in a year or two. You added a ton of weight using dimensional lumber and drywall instead of metal framing and composite materials- you will be lucky to go 20mph up a hill. 4. The drywall won't survive the bumps on the road, especially with regular drywall screws. 5. those big tires kick up a lot of rocks and debris and will destroy everything underneath unless you add skid plates or lexan. 6.large ceramic tiles always crack or fall off from road use, especially if you didn't use flexible adhesive 7. the roof raise compromised the structural integrity and no insurance company will cover you- especially with the roof deck. Nice build if you plan on parking it, but this will not survive one long road trip without major problems. Next time consult with experienced builders who've lived the road life a long time, instead of copying other first-timer builds. Goooood luck!

What is the GVWR of this specific model? In another comment he said it weighs 29,900lbs with empty water tanks. Even if you figure full 200gal black, 100gal gray, and 100gal fresh that's 32,300lbs. Thomas states GVWR of up to 36,200lbs for their Saf-T-Liner HDX buses, which is what this is, however we need to know the specific year & wheelbase of this bus he used and I don't see where he stated that anywhere.

I like the enthusiasm in this video, but it oozes thoughtless waste. Tile? Double shower head? Black water twice as big as fresh water? My assumption is given all the help his dad is giving, they're building this vehicle to be mostly stationary, likely it will sit on their parents' lot or someone they share land with. Otherwise this thing will be STUPID expensive to move.
