I've been absolutely obsessed with this game since about September of last year. While I for whatever reason was doubtful of just how good it really was after my first playthrough, I came to the understanding that is the most rewarding and addictive game I've experienced so far. What's truly remarkable to me however is just how long it took for this brilliant game to get such a dedicated and passionate overview in the English-speaking community. The closest I can think of is some of Adam's videos a few years back to celebrate the release of the fan translation. I don't really know what means 'success' to you in the release of your videos, but I have a feeling that while this might not top views or the like, this might be your most IMPORTANT video. You gave this game what it very much deserved and was long overdue; a passionate, insightful, thoughtful, and overall truly befitting video of the game's own caliber. Thank you. I think you should be very proud of this!

As you said, it puts tactical in RPG. Even in my weaker first run, the game never felt impossible, though I started using save states once a turn by the middle of it to cut some slack, but with time, thought, and a bit of luck, I managed to finish it.

Berwick Saga is a such a chaotic game. It breaks every modern game design rule regarding player control. Rather than removing luck from the experience, Berwick Saga is a game about minimizing risk and maximizing outcomes through a combination of luck and skill. I'm all here for it.
@ultimaterecoil11368 ай бұрын
Tbd luck can be used in a way that still retains full player control of the outcome. Take trails turn based system and how you actively see for example oh turn 4 is a crit let’s make sure I use actions that are not too fast that I act on turn 3 then lose that crit but not too slow that I act next on turn 5. Or hey let’s use the super move that gives me a turn whenever on turn 4 so I get the crit that way. Or hey on turn 7 you cast arts with no charge time and no cost to arts points let’s get my magic dude a turn on turn 7 so he can cast the spell which normally takes the entirety of his arts points to drop the sun on the enemies with a large charge time normally but not need to spend arts points and cast it instantly. Awekening tried to do this to an extent with lunatic+ skill rng but there was still rng in the map as well and sometimes you were screwed from the start.

Thats how you can tell it was made by an autuer haha Instead of following convensions or thinking of future standards, it was built as the author decided was best
@RocketSlime4 ай бұрын
@@ultimaterecoil1136I feel like bws does the idea really amazingly with all the options it gives you to mitigate rng even early on, such as hitrates with using food bonuses and using certain units near eachother such as Adel, Leon and Reese to hit Solidly not just that hitrates enemy units have are like the players, along with the fact the hitrates gradually get better as the game goes on. With Weapon breaking you can swap often and reduce the chance of them breaking by more than you'd think along with Repair Stones existing.

I've played Berwick saga twice, I think back to back like you. The first time, I played blind while occasionally looking up recruitment/promotion and using save states. I had a great time and left thinking it was a masterpiece. The second time, I dove into reddit, found out I played the game wrong and used bad units, and attempted to recruit everyone, do most events and most importantly, no save states. It was miserable and I got halfway through before I quit that idea and just used units I wanted to use and used save states. I do think thracia is a better game than this, just because it's easier. But Berwick saga is genius, straight up. You didn't talk a lot about the hexagons but I'm now convinced they're way better than squares 😂. If there was a patch to make Berwick saga easier/more reliable/reveal hidden info, I'd gladly pick it up again and maybe go through with that recruit everyone and all events/bounties idea. But for now, I think I'd rather play any other fe game 😭 Also, I literally had to stop the video, go to action button and see if I missed a super Mario bros video 😂
@superilikeeggsyo8 ай бұрын
"I dove into reddit, found out I played the game wrong and used bad units, and attempted to recruit everyone, do most events and most importantly, no save states. It was miserable and I got halfway through before I quit" I think this sentiment is why a lot of FE fans rag on the Kaga games nowadays. They have lots of obscure mechanics and a reputation as being "difficult" but when looking up a guide and planning an optimal run they become outright dull IMO. Recently I did a runthrough of FE3 (when I learned that FE3/4 are on the JP Switch Online SNES emulator) where I plowed through the game doing a pseudo ironman and not looking up any of the secret shop locations, how the sphere items work, etc. (haven't played the game since I was like 14 so I forgot basically everything) Ended up having a much more fun go of things and I imagine FE4/5 are similarly fun when you're not sending units to arbitrary event tiles and obsessing over getting certain pairings to fire off.
@vishuprathikanti93528 ай бұрын
@@superilikeeggsyo lol I think it's maybe more complicated. Most units in Berwick saga actually take a decent amount of investment, "good" units included. So if you don't enjoy/properly understand a unit, you feel like you're enduring a lot of bs that the game throws at you, rather than forgiving it when you're having fun with a few you like. That second run wasn't dull at all, it was just not fun.
@superilikeeggsyo8 ай бұрын
@@vishuprathikanti9352 Oh no I understand. I meant dull as in "tedious/mindless". Not "boring". I haven't played Berwick saga myself but based on your comments and the overall tone of the video the comparison to FE5 is a lot more apt that the anecdote I gave about FE3. FE5 when played blind has the player constantly on-edge over the mechanics and gimmicks but even when using a guide to know how where the warp tiles are, how to recruit Xavier, etc. you still have to juggle things like fatigue, 1/256 miss chance and other nonsense the game throws at you. My point was more that I legitimately don't think I could get much enjoyment out of any of Kaga's games if I had a guide on me while playing it or was actively trying for a LTC or Perfect Rank. Will probably get around to playing this and the two Vestaria Saga games at some point though. Just to embrace the wackiness.
@dedyariansa76188 ай бұрын
you can definetly making berwick saga more "easier" with a randomizer,you can make it "balance" patch that adding more or less to the games,and you can even make your own balance patch if you wanted to.

Fantastic video! Berwick is one of those games that will definitely not click with most people, but if it clicks for you, it's one of the most amazing gaming experiences ever created. And even were I not a huge fan of this game, I'd still respect it for taking full advantage of the medium, intertwining narrative and gameplay beautifully. As is, it's probably still my favourite game, because its mechanics all flow together incredibly well and it's just fun to utilise them to their full potential. I love Berwick's maps and difficulty progression, I adore all the units that for the most part feel truly unique to each other. I was fully convinced by this game that skill sets will always make for a vastly more fun cast than a single minor personal skill + a bunch of class ones. I like most of the characters and imo a lot of them left a much bigger impact on me than whatever a support system could achieve. Making the player actually use characters, instead of glueing 2 of them together to grind up an arbitrary amount of points, taking full advantage of the hub to create a myriad of optional events and adding unit-specific objectives on maps made me actually care about the cast both story and gameplay wise. Ruby and Clifford, Izerna and Dean, Christine, Ward and Elbert, plus Axel, Larentia and Sylvis are some of my favourite S/TRPG characters, despite not having chunks of script comparable to Hamlet in length dedicated to each of them. The music is some of my favourite in the genre, though some short pieces can get repetitive. I like the art direction, even if it's not everyone's cup of... whatever you like to drink. In conclusion: Next time someone says Final Fantasy Tactics is “like chess”, scoff at them and say, “More like Connect Four-you haven’t played Berwick Saga you dumb noob.” Then put on your sunglasses and dolphin-flop out the nearest thirty-story window.

Fantastic video. Berwick Saga has been in my top 3 games list since I first played it years ago, and this video just happens to come out while I’m starting my 6th replay? Must be fate. I think that the reduced scope of Berwick’s story is honestly very refreshing and interesting. You get a point-of-view in the war between the League and Raze that’s very atypical for a FE-adjacent game, the comparison to Thracia is pretty spot on (though I do think it makes much more sense than Thracia does when played standalone). Reese is uniquely situated to be impactful only on a small scale while still interacting with these major players in the greater conflict, I honestly really love it- and I’m totally not salty I never got a sequel starring Zephyrus. Haha… I was already entertained enough by this video to subscribe, but then you referenced Super Thracia and Trails and got me to point at the screen like DiCaprio because this dude is literally me.
