6:00 Julius/Ishtar don't actually have to kill *YOUR* units to leave. They leave if they kill *ANY* unit. This means that if you berserk a generic enemy into them, or berserk Ishtar into a generic enemy, they will still leave once one of them kills something, using the dialogue as if they had been the first to score a kill on a "rebel". 8:50 The Black Knight is statically impossible to beat without either a Wrath crit, Aether proc or risking a Game Over by staying in Resolve range without healing. It's not about skill. The entire fight is purely luck.

You start to FEAR the jingle that plays when a Movement Star is in effect with him! You see he's on foot so are like "okay it will be abit till he gets to me" you think, then he moves.....and you hear that DREADED SOUND on enemy phase and see it! Then he moves again! God HELP YOU! (I found Galzus AFTER BK as I started the series like everyone else in America with FE7: Blazing Sword/GBA and played each game RIGHT as they came out here on America! Each was a Day 1 buy for me. Only looked into the old games and emulated them after Awakening while waiting on Fates. But BK put that fear into me first. Especially when he came out of THAT FUCKING HOUSE and killed Soren who was sadly for me IN RANGE! Forcing a Reset for me! My first one of that game as I was doing fine with no deaths up to that point! I was horrified to see he couldn't be damaged and was invincibile! But that moment made me stay as far the fuck away from him whenever he showed up! I even PREDICTED when I'd finally fight him CORRECTLY and used ALOT of stat boosters on Ike upon him reaching Lord and BEXP till he was LVL 20 WAY a chapter before the FINALE with BK with Maxed Stats all around where they mattered.....just to do BEARLY any damage and being lucky to hit TWICE! Only AFTER that fight did I realize I could have given him NIHL to protect against Luna! And by after I mean "WHEN I FOUGHT HIM FOR THE LAST TIME IN RADIANT DAWN! I was kicking myself as I had to fight him THREE TIMES meaning I had to replay that map AGAIN in full to get another shot as he killed Ike on the first time with Luna, hence hating myself about NIHIL which I gave to BOYD who has my ETERNAL hatred now. And Round 2 barely survived but ran out of time! Frankly He got me with Luna in the first round BEFORE Mist showed up to help, which I didn't know about, but thank god I used and promoted her, so Canto and healing was a GREAT combination! and allowed me to win Round 3! But I will say, Not a fan of luck based which is why I prefer the fight with him in Radiant Dawn! I lose Aether, but I don't have to rely on it and him losing Luna to make it a TRUE fight ) Death Knight was a terror when he could move (which made my 5th run with him in Maddening FRIGHTENING when he FUCKING MOVES in Chapter 4! Lets say being ready for him with a Byleth with decent speed, I got lucky Byleth survived the first strike without a critical as he was showing the dreaded 22%! Though that one strike took a SHIT TON of health off! it has a 66% chance to hit taking his Personal into account since he initiated as I was baiting him.. Lucky Yuri had a Rapier which I gave to Byleth and was able to finish him off) Sad Engage only used this ONCE in it's Chapter 11. I know they tried, but the "Fallen One" really wasn't too intimidating knowing who they are because you were too use to the OTHER side of them prior to THE REVEAL to be intimidating! Gharnef had some build up. Galzus lived up to his reputation in the fear factor department. BK delivers on why he's terrifying. Even Jeritza/Death Knight despite how his Hannya Mask Helmet made me laugh sometimes got a fright out of me (especially once you see him in Maddening). But The Fallen one is likely seeing the "Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog! (At least they are invincible, meaning it's better to RUN!)

My favorite instance of this is in Valkyria Chronicles. Not a Fire Emblem game, but still an anime strategy game. The main character of Valkyria Chronicles, Welkin, for all intents and purposes isn't playable. He sits inside a tank which is driven by his sister and issues orders. The only map you get to really control him is a stealth map, you engage the enemy and you die. This kind of goes to cement the idea that Welkin is completely a strategist and not a fighter. In one of the maps you are trying to fend off an invasion force. When you get half way through the map the enemy calls in reinforcements in the form of a Valkyrie. She is invincible, can one shot your characters, and can even one shot your tanks on foot. The rest of the map is not about retreating though. It's about disabling the giant vehicle carrying the enemy commander while trying to not get killed by the Valkyrie. Once you do that, SHE has to retreat because she can't protect the commander and fight off an army at the same time. This fight legitimately makes you feel like a badass. You chase away a legitimate demi-god who cannot be killed through pure strategy.

Maybe it's just me, but I rarely ever hear about comparing stats to the unbeatable enemies. It's one of my favorite parts of the Black Knight in PoR. Especially since it builds up the eventual Ike vs. Black Knight showdown and you're actively checking how much closer Ike is to taking him on. And like you mentioned, this is a subtle form of storytelling that video games can convey. One thing I don't think you mentioned about the Black Knight that you did touch on with Arvis is how checking his stat page you could also get a glimpse of the Luna skill which them imprints the idea of these special skills that units can learn beyond the basic ones you have at the moment. Reading its description of halving your Def also adds to the fear of trying to take him on earlier than you're supposed to.

For starters, there are only five playable units that learn any Dark Magic: Edelgard, Hubert, Jeritza, Lysithea, and Hapi. Only two of them can access the Dark Mage classes, both of whom are exclusive to Crimson Flower (alongside Edie), and even then, Jerry only learns one Dark Magic spell (even though his spell pool is already shallow at a total of six).

There are a few units who don’t get great class options/classes that aren’t great (Manuela, the sword classes, holy knight, great knight, Flayn w/o DLC) but otherwise I think 3H did an awesome job with classes

My problem with the Death Knight, is that he stops being imposing after your first playthrough. Even on maddening, even without Lysithea cheese, any bulky unit with a guard assist will have no trouble tanking him on his first appearance and deal decent damage on the counter attack, after that you just pile on with combat arts. His second appearance the tricky part is to not kill everyone else before him or the map ends, and third appearance onwards you should have at least a couple units that can win the 1v1.

@davidemaroldi97554 ай бұрын
For starters, the GameCube wasn't exactly a hot console, even though there are games released on GameCube that sold well. Most importantly, at the time Fire Emblem was a very niche series, and SRPGs in general weren't a big genre in the west like they are today. Most westeners' first exposure to Fire Emblem came with Marth and Roy in Melee and Path of Radiance was only the third game released internationally (and it obviously released before Brawl, which attracted more eyes on the franchise). All these factors made PoR basically an obscure niche game on a console that didn't sell really well. I don't really know about PoR's performance in Japan, but in the west this is roughly the reason why it sold so poorly.

There is an inherent difficulty, I think, in writing a war story wherein you get pitted against enemies that cannot die yet in the story. This comes in different flavours, not only the Recurring Boss who you actually CAN or even DO defeat multiple times, but also the Hopeless Boss Fight… These have different effects of course; the effectiveness is similarly different at that. Frankly, the Death Knight was thrown at us much too often; once or twice isn’t too bad, but after the third time the fact you technically CAN defeat him (hard as it is) really feels like it undermines you absurdly dangerous he’s meant to be. Now, of course the Black Knight - being undefeatable - is a different flavour, but at least he remains authentically threatening and you’re forced to run… Also, just far more interesting as a character whereas Jeritza’s not bad, but only half as intriguing as the story thinks he is.

He’s not that bad on his own, but those units that assist him and especially the clusterfuck of enemies in front of you already with insane weapons and boosted stats is insane, and he’s just the worst part. You can avoid it all by hugging the north then West most wall as the game indicates. Then chapter 24 has Vaida who has ridiculous and insurmountable base stats, except for whatever reason she simply boosts them while in combat as well. She’s also avoidable, up in some mountain, and she has 2 other wyverns with her.

Paired in with kishuna himself taking away your magic users, so no heal staffing, AND being on a strict clock to kill him, AND requiring him be killed in 1 turn, and well, its one hell of a reality check. Then just to add in to it, if you fail to kill him, you lose access to some of the best story in fe7 imo. He's not as big a threat as the good old burger king, but he's still an incredible challenge.

@@rental_buckete4631 ik but for a save ohko, she needs the lance of ruin which either requires having Sylvain recruited before chapter 5 or already being in the blue lions

Better to have an enemy that is unbeatable than to have an enemy that doesn't die after you completely destroy them just because plot. Death Knight is supposed to be both lol. But at the very least you can say that it makes sense that an enemy you're not supposed to defeat is able to survive if you actually defeat them.

Death Knight is all terrifying until you whip out the Lysithea card and say "Dark Spikes T" and suddenly he disappears

Ah yes MHTri throwing Lagiacrus at u while carving for Monster Organs. The Game: I mean u barely got Green sharpness and like 10 defense. U gotta run right? .... Right? Me: Look i want Lagi Parts and i gonna get them. Now we can do this the easy way or the hard way - the choice is yours

I dislike the death knight because from the very first time you meet him, you can beat him, and he shows up NUMEROUS times throughout the game. So if you’ve been actively engaging them each map you encounter them, they loose a lot of their threat and it just becomes annoying at how the game keeps hyping them up when you’ve killed them so much already.

Not from the Fire Emblem series, but the game "Andaron Saga" made it good. The atmosphere, the situation, the stats and music. In 4 different maps are enemies that are too strong to fight them and I love it.

Engage chapter 11 is an amazing example of this because at the beginning of the map the random corrupted with the emblems are already very capable of mauling your party so you know how bad fighting the emblems is and then the game suddenly drops the 4 hounds on you and Zephia and Marnie crossing half the map in 2 turns is more than enough to put the fear of god in you.
