Honestly any normal hooper shouldn’t listen to Shaq’s advice when it comes to basketball, he has a completely different view of basketball than 99.9% of people because he used to easily dominate the league being 300+ lbs, 7’1 and yet moving like a forward, he’s one of the most athletic humans of all time and was basically built for basketball, even a super athlete like Charles Barkley doesn’t come close to prime Shaq’s athleticism lmao

Coaches aren't that important after years of playing. If you've ever played, you know that there are plays you learn, but after that you just go out and play basketball the way you've always played. You can get some good advice at times, but rarely are you ever learning anything new after you've got to the HS level. How often do you see teams in the NBA even set up an offensive play? It's mostly just pick and rolls, which you learn in elementary. Those HOF coaches were just lucky enough to have some good players that played well together. You could put any coach with the 90s bulls and still had the same outcome.

@@ebogar42That’s not always the case especially with Shaq tho. Why couldn’t he win before Phil got to LA? LeBron couldn’t win before he got Spo. Warriors couldn’t win until they got Kerr. Coaching doesn't matter much at that level. Only way you're good at any level is if you have a good team and can play well together. Shaquille O’Neal has often emphasized how transformative it was to have Phil Jackson as his coach, particularly during their championship runs with the Los Angeles Lakers. Here are some key points Shaq has made about Phil’s impact: Instilling Discipline and Focus: Shaq has credited Phil Jackson for teaching him how to approach the game with a more cerebral mindset. Jackson’s famous emphasis on the mental aspects of basketball helped Shaq understand the importance of being prepared, composed, and focused, especially in high-stakes moments. The Triangle Offense: Jackson's implementation of the triangle offense required everyone, including Shaq, to buy into a system where ball movement and teamwork were paramount. Shaq often noted that the triangle helped him play smarter, making it easier to dominate in the post while trusting his teammates to capitalize when defenses collapsed on him. Managing Egos: Phil’s ability to manage strong personalities, especially the dynamic between Shaq and Kobe Bryant, was crucial. Shaq has said that Phil knew how to handle their egos and make both of them feel valued within the team structure. He believed that without Phil’s steady leadership, their success together might not have been possible. Motivational Tactics: Shaq frequently shared how Phil used unconventional but effective methods to inspire his players. For instance, Jackson would often use Zen philosophy, books, and even Native American teachings to help players reflect on their roles and contributions. Shaq appreciated how these approaches kept the team mentally sharp and motivated. Making Him Better: Shaq admitted that Phil challenged him to take his game to new heights. Phil’s belief in accountability pushed Shaq to focus more on his conditioning, defense, and leadership-areas he sometimes overlooked earlier in his career. Shaq has succinctly described Phil Jackson as the coach who “taught me how to win,” underscoring how Jackson’s guidance was instrumental in transforming the Lakers into a dynasty.

Bruh Shaq is nuts on this one. You need great players AND great coaches to win chips, ESPECIALLY multiple chips with the same team. It's a coincidence the Heat made the finals twice as a lower seed under Spoelstra? It's a coincidence the Golden State Warriors were able to beat the Celtics for that 4th ring when they had less talent and were older? Coaching is probably the thing that progressed the most, and has become the most important. Especially with the game becoming heavily dependent on 3 and D.

@@Dayy1028 Jordan had decent success on the court before Phil arrived but he could not win a championship. Jordan always had exceptional talent however he needed time to fully develop his skills. A player must lean the part of the game he can only get from a couch. Understanding how plays are drawn up, and how to execute them. Jordan was not the god we know him as today when he was a rookie in 1984. It took several years of refining his skills, and getting stronger physically. Also, the Bulls needed to sign other key players before the team had what it took to win a championship. It was Jordan's mastery of the game in his prime combined with the brilliant coaching mind of Phil Jackson that overtime developed the Bulls into the well oiled machine that won 6 championships. Take Phil Jackson out of the picture and it is possible The Lakers win the championship in 1991 and the Bulls never become the dominant dynasty of the 1990s. Jordan never proved he could win without Phil Jackson. In fact, Jordan retired after the '97-'98 season because Phil was not coming back. That proves he knew how valuable Phil's coaching was to him and the team. Phil went to LA and built another dynasty with the Lakers proving he could win without Jordan. This confirms he was the architect of the Bulls Dynasty and how important good coaching is to players. It doesn't matter if they are superstars or simply good players. Without a strong coach a team will struggle to win games and fail to become a championship contender. Shaq is wrong, even at 52 he still has the inflated ego of his younger self.

Kenny makes a great point at 5:35 and as a result, shaq takes back his words right after that. Shaq didn't need a coach to teach him what to do because he was THAT dominating during games. He was special. What he fails to understand is that he was part of a very small pool of gifted players that didn't need the guidance and wisdom of a coach. Very few players are like that.
