That's actually illegal for a pitcher to do. They aren't supposed to throw warmup pitches other than during the designated periods between innings, or after a pitching change. You can't just start throwing warmup pitches whenever you feel like it.

Watch some 90s (and older) baseball; middle infielders were almost always given the "area" around 2nd base to count as an out (in order to avoid takeout slides).
@fuckyougoogleplus86679 жыл бұрын
+pwnn00bzorz1 Yes...but that is not what happened in this case. He didn't miss (or almost miss) second because he was trying to avoid the slide. He missed it because when he caught the ball, he was a little farther away from the bag than he though, so when he took one stride, he EXPECTED that that would put his foot on the bag. But it came up about 8 inches short. That is why he stutter stepped and dragged his foot toward the bag. He was clearly NOT trying to avoid a slide.
@kf47449 жыл бұрын
+pwnn00bzorz1 Neighbourhood play isn't meant to cover any fielder just running into the 'area' around 2nd base. The shortstop had to be in the vicinity of the bag when receiving the ball... he wasn't though he received the ball and had to go to the bag then throw. Also, he didn't miss the bag intentional out of a safety concern. He genuinely missed the bag, otherwise he wouldn't have tried to drag his toe to the bag. Neighbourhood play shouldn't have been the situation here IMO.
@Rowgue516 жыл бұрын
Yes. They have made takeout slides illegal since then though. And since the entire reason for allowing the "neighborhood" play was made illegal they also adjusted the rules to explicitly state that a fielder must actually touch the base for an out to be recorded. There is no such thing as a neighborhood play anymore.

@fuckyougoogleplus86679 жыл бұрын
This is a perfect example of why baseballs replay rules are REALLY fucking stupid. Whether he missed the bag or not, this was NOT a "neighborhood play." That is when a fielder PURPOSELY misses the bag to avoid a sliding runner. This play was not that. This play as the fielder catching the ball awkwardly on the run, and his initial attempt to step on the bag came up several inches short of the bag, forcing him to try to drag his toe before releasing the ball. That SHOULD have been reviewable. However, if those were the only two angles, it would have likely resulted in the play standing anyway since neither angle definitively showed that his toe drag attempt failed to touch or not..

+Martin Gardner The umpires are trying to figure out whether the neighborhood rule applies or not, which determines whether the play is reviewable. On a 4-6-3 double play, umpires do not require the shortstop to actually touch second base. They only require him to be in the neighborhood in order to award the out. Thus whether the shortstop touched second IS NOT a reviewable play. On a 6-3 double play, however, the shortstop does not get the benefit of the neighborhood rule since allowing him the neighborhood would allow him to throw the ball to first before touching second and would hurt the hitting team. Thus whether the shortstop touched second IS a reviewable play. What Maddon was arguing is that this play is more like a 6-3 double play than a 4-6-3 double play because the shortstop was still running toward the base when he caught the ball. Thus the same timing concerns still apply, and the shortstop should not get the benefit of the neighborhood rule, which would make the play reviewable. So when Maddon came out, the umpire told him the play wasn't reviewable. He explained his argument, and he convinced the field umpires. So the field umpires contacted the replay umpires, who disagreed. Ultimately the umpires decided that the neighborhood rule did apply because the shortstop was receiving then throwing the ball at second, which is the situation for the neighborhood rule. So ultimately the umpires decided that play was not reviewable.
@Rowgue518 жыл бұрын
That's not an entirely accurate description of the neighborhood play. I know it doesn't matter much since it doesn't exist anymore, but it bears explanation for the sake of this video. The neighborhood play does not allow the fielder turning the double play to completely avoid ever stepping on second base. What it did was allow the fielder ALREADY in contact with the base to come off of the base early, pushing himself off the base and towards where the ball is coming from in order to help avoid collisions. Even when the neighborhood interpretation was accepted it was absolutely reviewable if he ever touched the base at all. What wasn't reviewable was whether he was in contact with the base at the precise moment he received the ball.
@robcoop65217 жыл бұрын
So you don't need to step on the base? Your explanation is here but wtf? Just be close, it's all good. When did baseball get complicated weird rules?

When they have these delays, the math of it starts going through my mind... there are at least a couple of thousand people in the stands, there are probably many thousands watching the game on TV. If there is a delay of three minutes and there are 100,000 people watching, that is 300,000 minutes or 5000 hours of total hours of human delay which translates into over 208 days. So, a three minute delay is like subjecting one person to approximately 7 months of incarceration. I've got to say that at least while incarcerated by a rules or umpire delay, we can at least use the time to do math.

This logic has got to go. It's like when companies claim to have a 100 years worth of experience just because they have 5 guys that have 20 years each doing the same job. Neither of which guy has been with that company for that amount of time. But it sounds good, and guaranteed, a crap load of people buy that BS. No one seems to notice what was the real problem on this play. The runner from 1st clearly roll-blocks the shortstop making the throw. That is interference and should have resulted in a doubleplay. This was in 2015, not last year. But you are correct, the sliding rule didn't exist in 2015.

Even if the rule did exist then it wasn't violated here. The only requirement for a slide to be legal, even under the new rule, is that you end your slide in a position where you can still reach the base. The runner here slid like a foot past the bag and kept contact with the base the entire time. The only rules violation in this clip was the blatant balk by the pitcher.
