In 1958 I was just a young man 17 years old, living in Toronto and had NEVER been exposed to classical music. A neighbour gave me a ticket to see Maria Callas in La Traviata at the O'Keefe Centre. Not understaning a word of the arias was very frustraing for me, but the MUSIC ! - I was hooked for life. The aria Che fai?/Nulla - Amami, Alfredo just blew me away. and still does after all these years. Anna Netrebko is brilliant & the chemistry with her and Villazon borders on electrifying 5 Stars!

For sure this is the best Traviata of the last 50 years but I suppose this is probably the best Traviata in the entire history. Anna is the voice, the orchestra and the conductor all in one here, and she knows the score as the composer. Colossal.

Netrebko and Villazon are absolutely chilling in this scene. I find myself breaking down throughout Anna's emotional struggle every time I watch this. After listening to her sing this hundreds of times I still get goosebumps. Brava Anna! You are one of the best ever!

This surely is the most moving couple of minutes in all opera. I used to think Puccini surpassed Verdi in this respect, but I'm afraid that this piece is the most evocative opera piece by far. I cry every time I listen to it. The best interpretation I have seen, Anna is simply magnificent.

j'ai 63 printemps, et de bonnes oreilles et de bons yeux, j'aime le beau et pour moi ce qui est beau, c'est ce qui me plait, et anna et rolando me plaisent pour leur presence et leur chants.quand a sutherland(vous en avez plein la bouche) je l'ai vue a bruxelles dans le jury du concour RE, une grande voix, mais faut vous faire a l'idée que c'est le passé (heureusement pour les yeux)il faut se tourner vers l'avenir qui me rejouit pour le future de l'opera.netrebko et villazon en font partie.

She might be not the ever best in technique, but she compensate with her acting the part and her voice is a bliss whatever the music geeks say. She IS the best voice, but I hope she is still continuing with her lessons. She can be a star above all - with what is given to her. Bless you Anna, go on girl.

Because it's real life, real opera; it requires all the fireworks, all the passion. What happens is that we are used to watch an old chubby soprano and an old chubby tenor singing 2 metres apart fron each other (with all respect, but who obviously disregarded their physical fitness in favour of glorious voices.

Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon were excellent as Violeta and Alfredo as singers and as actor.I dont like very much the direction but their performances and Thomas Hampson as Germont father were excellent I love Netrebko when she sings the right roles for her voice.

la Traviata di Zeffirelli era un film quindi ha potuto girare tutte le prove che voleva e tante angolazioni contenporanemente. Questa e una recitazione in teatro con tutti i rischi che comporta..Comunque è stata riconosciuta dal pubblico e dalla critica come grande esrcuzione,e ha lanciato la Netrbko ha livello mondiale,poi ognuno può esprimere le sue perplessità.

Io sono combattuta, le adoro entrambe... ma Anna ha una presenza scenica grazie alla quale riesce a compensare ogni sbavatura tecnica. Sono una semplice estimatrice d'opera e parlo da profana... qui ad esempio non mi è sembrata impeccabile (a tratti mi è parso pure non avesse fiato), ma ho sentito brividi che vanno oltre l'acuto perfetto. Vederla e ascoltarla è puro godimento!

That is true to an extent, dear @FilmGuyNewyork. IMO, you can tell the story many times in different ways keeping time period. Or else, we could stage all operas in greek tragedy fashion to stress its intemporality. What is really hard is to show the intemporality keeping the time period and that's the challenge to the artists.
