Cheap 1999 Land Rover Discovery Will it Run?

I try to get a 1999 Land Rover Discovery that sat in a front yard for many years running. From checking the fuses, replacing the fuel pump and removing the XYZ switch will it run?

sounds like an immobilizer fault this page describes the immobilizer override using the key ALARM SYSTEM AND HORN DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 86-4-21 Emergency key access If the handset fails to operate, the engine can be remobilised by using the key to enter a unique four digit Emergency Key Access (EKA) code. There are three configurations for emergency key access: l EKA not active (no immobiliser fitted). l EKA active. l EKA with super locking on receiving good passive remobilisation exciter coil signal. The code is recorded on the security information card and is entered as follows: 1 Using the key, turn the driver's door lock to the UNLOCK position and hold in this position for at least 5 seconds. An audible warning is then emitted to indicate that the body control unit is ready to accept the code. Return the key to the centre position. It is now possible to use the key to enter the separate numerical values of the four digits that make up the EKA code. 2 Enter the first digit of the code. If the first digit is 4, turn the key to the UNLOCK position 4 times. Ensure the key is fully returned to the centre position after each turn of the key. 3 Enter the second digit of the code. If the second digit is 3, turn the key to the LOCK position 3 times. Ensure the key is fully returned to the centre position after each turn of the key. 4 Enter the third digit of the code. If the third digit is 2, turn the key to the UNLOCK position twice. Ensure the key is fully returned to the centre position after each turn of the key. 5 Enter the fourth digit of the code. If the fourth digit is 1, turn the key to the LOCK position once. Ensure the key is fully returned to the centre position after each turn of the key. 6 Finally, turn the key to the UNLOCK position and back to the centre position, a double bleep will indicate that the code has been entered correctly. A single bleep indicates that the code has been entered incorrectly. Then, before opening the door, wait 5 minutes for the alarm and immobiliser to be de-activated. During the 5 minute wait for the alarm and immobiliser to be de-activated, the alarm indicator LED in the instrument pack continues to flash (one flash every 2 seconds). DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR OR ATTEMPT TO ENTER THE CAR until the full delay period has elapsed. When the 5 minute wait has elapsed, the alarm indicator LED stops flashing. Immediately open the door, insert the key in the ignition switch and turn the switch to position II. If the ignition switch is not turned to position II within 30 seconds of the end of the 5 minute wait, the engine is automatically immobilised again. The EKA code will not be recognised if there is an interval of 10 seconds or more between key turns or if the key is held turned for 5 seconds or more during the procedure. In some system configurations a successful EKA code entry is indicated by the audible warning device pulsing twice for a period of 50 ms on, 200 ms off. The theft deterrent LED is switched on for 1 second, all doors unlock, the alarm disarms and the vehicle is remobilised allowing the engine to start. If an incorrect code is entered, an audible warning is emitted and the procedure must be repeated. Up to a maximum of 10 attempts to enter the code is possible. After 10 attempts, the BCU will not allow any further codes to be entered for a period of 10 minutes. Single point entry Single point entry (SPE) allows the driver to unlock the driver's door while leaving all other doors locked. There are two configurations for single point entry: l SPE not active. l SPE active. To use SPE, press the unlock button on the handset once. Depressing the unlock button a second time in the space of one minute unlocks the remaining doors. SPE is also possible by turning the key in the driver's door lock to the unlock position once. Turning the key to the unlock position again within one minute unlocks the remaining doors. In order for SPE to operate, the following conditions must be met: l The ignition is off. l All doors are locked.

Remove the ECM and check for oil around the plug. If you find oil, use WD-40 contact cleaner to flush the socket and plug. Use compressed air to dry off. This worked for me. ECM is behind the battery box. Red and White plugs. Red plug will be to oily one once you unplug it. Good luck.

also of note if you unlock the car but do not start within 90 secs it will imobilise press the unlock button again to start. the answer to all things landrover is yes it will run but you have to do a little maintenance, there are far more old landrovers still serving their owners in the world than old toyotas or jeeps

I have a 94 Disco 1 here in Jamaica. A much simpler machine with a 200tdi engine. The red wire going to the battery that you touched to the hot to start was going to the starter solenoid and bypassed everything else. I know, because I had a problem with a wire going through the firewall from ignition, so wired it directly using a light switch on the dash to briefly engage to start. Still using it, and it's also an anti-theft device.

my old 200DTi ran faultlessly on 50/50 fresh cooking oil and diesel and when it was cold I poured in a splash of unleaded..lol always started without heater plugs on..loved it but had to sell it after 10 years as it was 5 speed and needed auto..

I've got a 1999 Land Rover Discovery 2, I had the flashing B in the odometer display, immobiliser stuck on ,power windows not working ,hazard lights not working.was told it could be the XYZ sensor ( but mine is manual not automatic) or there is a continuity issue between the BCU and the ECU, caused by water ingress from the back of the fuse box under the dash. It took me weeks to sort it out! Good hunting...

OK, Immobiliser problems, try reconecting the red wire but run through an on board switch, but try tipping fuel into the air intake after the air filter to prove it fires up, if not seek an immobiliser by pass ..

Yes, possible immobilizer. Also be sure to check and see if there are any codes indicating the ECU and BCU are no longer synced. After a dead battery one summer, my computers decided they didn't want to talk anymore. My solution was to buy a matched ECU and BCU on ebay for about $100. You do need to make sure you get a secondary air version if your Disco is so equipped - I didn't think that it was from looking at your engine bay.

I had a similar issue with a disco 2 - transpired there was a dry joint in the immobiliser- cure was a to by pass the faulty unit - had a good auto electrician sort I out- not an uncommon issue with Disco 2. Once you get it going they are good off road vehicles

After checking the fuses go straight to the relays. And if those are ok check the plugs on the fuel pump for electricity. No need to change the pump straight away. It may have been stuck. Put negative on positive and positive on negative and try to turn the pump the other way around to get it free. Last test for the pump before dumping it is put 24 volt on the sucker ( pun intended).

when i had this problem and the two green lights were blinking. i would turn the key switch all the way and hold it. and then move the gear selector and it started. the cable and shifter are not aligned for me.

I had the xyz switch go, it’s around £350 to replace. The air con pipe discharges water over the switch. See my video on it.

Pity because when they work they're great cars. My brother had the same one in the early 2000s, was always getting faults like this and at the Land Rover main dealers a lot with it until eventually he chopped it in for a Volvo.

I have two. The disco one and the disco two. Both are broke down I feel ya. I was getting so into these and enjoying them. Then found out that same disco you have has a habit of the tensioner pulley literally breaking out of the bracket that holds it on lost my job the day that happened. Then the disco one. Running fine but my son blocked it in my back yard and lost his keys. After a couple months of screwing with it I pulled it with my atvs winch. Now the disco one won't start either I've tried damn near everything. So. Screw it getting rid of them both and bought a ram 2500 v10 scrap yard is calling thier name

Ring up the main dealer to get the EKA code or with any luck in the past somebody has written it down in the handbook. All the info is in the handbook.

You Keep Replacing Things That May Not Be Faulty or the Cause of non Starting, That's Guess Work & Expensive. To Check Immobiliser, put key in, Turn until Dash Lights are on, " Find Which Light is the Immobiliser: Armed / Disabled Light " You NEED to Know This Light & Not Guess. if the Immobiliser Light is Still Flashing, It's NOT Disabled = Engine Will Not Start. if the Immobiliser Light goes Out, Immobiliser Is OK, Engine Should Be Able to Start, If it Still Does NOT Start, Problem is Else Where = No Need to Fit ANY Parts There.

Check if it’s got a diff lock before you do anything. It was an optional extra if it hasn’t it’s useless as a 4 wd. I sold mine when I got it stuck on my own lawn where it stayed for 2 months till the ground dried out. Get a disco 1 tuff as nuts they always keep running but nothing else works. Maybe you can swap some bits

Unplug loom going down to gearbox play around shorting it with a bulb with wires on it bulb will go full brightness if wrong connections

Make a yard ornament? Sometimes you get things that just aren't worth fixing, as the costs add up to more than its worth. Art it out for a month or so, then take it to the scrapyard. ( Don't run it through an auction, and sucker someone else into a lot of wasted time and money. Be kind)
