thanks for the mesh idea ! although now seeing the end, i can say for sure that getting that mesh between the heatsink and the motor's shell doesn't really help dissipating the heat :) one question though: i can see why a heatsink does the job on brushless, but the brushed motors do their cooling mainly with airflow. so a heatsink just cooling the outer body of the motor can't really help that much now, can it? considering that what actually heats up is the wiring which stands on the inside rotor of the motor....

Fantastic Test Phil and fantastic bashing👍, probably didn't help with the weather being so hot. I put a 550 ftx outlaw motor in my Wltoys A959 and it was fantastic on 3s , some motors don't like 3s and Some Do 😒 really enjoyed every minute of this Video as always bro 👍😎👍😁👍

Looked good fun right up to the smoke show, be interesting to see what difference the brushless makes, also is it worth making some vent holes in the front of the body to get some more airflow ??

A quick heads up mate! I heard at the end of the video you’re going to hop it up to brushless; prior to watching this video I put an Etronix Photon SBS 2.0 brushless system in my Phantom about a week ago, 3450kv motor w/ 2s lipo. It’s rapid to say the least, but unfortunately the transmission in mine can’t handle the power very well; it makes an awful crunching sound if you give it too much throttle and it stripped the plastic spur after just a few runs! I now have a metal spur in mine, but it still makes the noise if you’re greedy with the throttle; looking forward to your brushless video to see if you experience the same issue. please tell me, what does "quite hot" for the motor in this case at 5:00 ? can you hold your finger on the motor's case or on the heatsink?

Still, at least your stone excluding mesh mod worked! When I went brushless on my HPI Mini Trophy it melted its spur gear in two back-to-back battery packs of recording. I´ve noticed that I suffer from a tendency to trash my RCs when I´m filming, trying to get that perfect shot from mind´s eye to SD card. I do agree with you that brushed 540/550 motors all seem to hate running on 3s.

yes-n-no, I've run single 12v 550 in boats with 2 6 cell NiCad in series (14.4v) feeding. for that, don't use larger than a 35 mm 1.4 pitch surface prop. it all depends on the gage of wire the armature is wound with, and how many turns.

Good vid Phil. Same happened to mine so I dropped a brushless system in and it became a maniac 👍. I recommend bugsta wheels and shocks for some serious jumping capability 😂

Tomley RC caveat. It does eat planet gears and the meshing is a right pain. Awful motor clamp design 😂

Oh dear poor car. I think that there are a few that say they can take 3s but it's just not a good idea as you have proved! At least you have tested it so others don't have to :-)

Lol mine melted the motor on 3S - and the chassis lol.... Went brushless and all good until I hit a rock in the new forest and it split straight down the middle!

a 3300 kv brushless system 60 a esc or higher amperage for 3s, tie rods so you can adjust things all around like camber, toe in, toe out etc.. Oil shocks or a bit heavier shock oil if it has oil shocks. wheels,tires & perhaps smaller pinion for 3s on the brushless system & I'd say its a solid basher if you can find parts cheap locally. keep any aluminium parts away from it otherwise other then perhaps aluminium/metal drivetrain parts & perhaps modding on some carbon fiber stuff like say front & rear shock towers having the plastic tower sandwiched in between two 3mm plates & much longer screws & drilling a hole in the center & two in the lower corners of the shock tower too attach said carbon fiber pieces besides the shock mounting positions on the shock tower itself.

@@TomleyRC On 2s it shouldnt be too bad if you can lower the start punch or go easy on the throttle from a standstill. Though i bet those diffs are not gonna last long if you put on grippy tires or run on a grippy surface with that on 3s going for wheelies or standstill backflips for sure. Could make for a fun video though going with stupid amounts of power vs cheap rc's.

I’ve done that on my 1/16 scale I put a nimh pack that weighed as much as it and it lasted like 3 hours of super hard on off and flat out I think if I ziptied the battery down , soldered the deans connector I could probably get it really fast, it was hitting like 35 and doing wheelies 4 hours before the servo broke

I just don't think brushed motors and 3s go together very well. Only exceptions re maybe doing a few speed runs in an on-road car and crawlers where the gearing is so low that the motors don't work very hard. I'm sure the ambient temp was a contributing factor but I still don't think they will ever last on 3s for real world bashing use. Thank god for cheap brushless systems lol

naaw, there's 12v 550 motors available for model boats and cordless drills for decades, they'd put up with LiPo high current as long as it isn't geared TOO tall.

@@modelnutty6503 True but those 12v and higher motors are much lower RPM to begin with so they need more volts just to be on a level field with faster motors. I guess my point was that when you try to take a brushed motor that's designed to already be fast on 2s and try to run it on 3s it just wont cope. Brushless is so much more efficient that your typical 3300-4000 KV system is already as fast on 2s as a typical brushed system on 2s and they tolerate 3s much better too.

Question.. I have a traxxas 7 cell battery pack & the weird little traxxas charger that plugs into automotive cigarette lighter. The battery & charger get really hot after just a few minutes. Is this normal? I kinda feel like something is wrong with the battery even though it's new but I'm not really sure.

Hi Guys, I bought this truck for my son as his first RC car. It flies through the stock battery in 5 mins, so i bought a 5000mAh NiMH battery and it still blows through it in 5 mins! Is there a reason why it's doing this? Is there a problem with a setting somewhere or something to do with the ESC? Thanks in advance

Make sure the ‘tab’ on the ESC is set to ‘Nimh’.... if it’s on Lipo then it will be the low voltage cutting in 👍 A 5000mah NiMH should be good for 15-20mins easily

I don't get one thing Tom, HPI Flux is also 2-3S compatible, but nowhere in manual will they write "oh yeah put 3S with stock gearing and rock on!" You're experienced RC user, yet You don't mention in first video or any other I've watched, that it actually is strongly unadviseable to switch to higher voltage batteries without changing gearing. So did You look in the manual if Maveric is warning about this, if there are any gearing suggestions? Cause by just slamming 3S into 2S stock cars, You're making everything look bad once it goes frying. And even worse- some tests performed by You in cold weather, that the cars survive, may suggest to viewers "ok, it can take 3S stock", while they buy the car in summer and fry it straight away. You need to change Your testing/presenting procedures.
