I often get asked to review cheap RC cars that you can buy from your LHS (Local Hobby Shop/Store). Here's the cheapest basher I could find! New RC Car for 2020, and it's really nice out the box! I did have an issue, but it was a stone/dirt that got in to the motor. Next I will be running this Maverick Phantom XT on a 3s Lipo. Then maybe try it brushless!

It's always better to err on the side of caution Phil,you made the right choice there. Make up a cover from an old stocking,just to cover those vent slots,which should prevent a future occurance.

I have the same one with brand name Himoto. There is a huge gap behind the spur housing. which let's big rocks get in. Once I sealed it, it runs perfectly.

Himoto Bowie? I got sand and small stones in my drivetrain to. Rinsed the main gear on the main drive shaft. Im looking for a metal upgrade main gear and thinking about looking into Hpi maverick phantom xt too se if they got a 56t metal one? Or just buy a stock pile of plastic ones? And ofc seal off the gap too 😊👍

ladies nylon socks (calf height) are really cheap. cut a square from one, stretch it wide and tight over the vent holes and CA it around the edges, trim away the extra with a hobby blade. air will still flow great but the mesh keeps crap out motors real good. handy for other stuff too, you can make socks to cover dog bones and drive cups to keep crud out of them, even grease them then cover them like CV joint boots. wrap with thread tight and a spot of CA so they don't budge. for that go a little over 2 full wraps with the nylon cloth just medium stretched.

I have had the same issue. I pulled a little piece of grit out the gears which got sucked in via vent hole. Any example videos how to seal this up. Wouldn’t the nylon melt when hot??

Omg its a rebranded himoto katana and mine was £150 and brushless 2s battery and charger 3s capable and the A arms break easy ive got one front and back held on with cable ties dont jump it also screw heads strip easy

Mine is HIMOTO TANTO, the A arms don't look strong. Not sure if those aluminium upgrades are any better.

I bought one of these, along with an FTX carnage. It's crap. In the extreme. The FTX carnage is much better quality. The Maverick experienced: 10 minutes, pinion slipped - not threadlocked. 30 mins centre of a wheel broke. New wheels off bangood bought. 10 mins into next drive, stripped spur gear. 10 mins into next drive, another wheel centre shattered. 5 mins into next drive, motor slowed, then smoked, then stopped. Brushes fell out, literally. New motor. 10 mins into next drive, motor died, same cause. Bought brushless motor. Stripped Spur agin, within 30 mins. Bangood wheels still going strong. Noticed today one dogbone is bent badly. All screws are loose in holes once removed and refitted. It's the worst built POS I've ever owned. I have an orignal "real" HPI rally car that has been running for over 10 years without a new part. The FTX carnage is much better built. Same crap motor that failed, but all screw fittings are much better, it has a slipper clutch, a better pinion / spur mating system (Maverick relies on an oblong mounting system).

It's an absolute bargain. Chassis tub looks like it's made from some weak plastic . But for that kind of money you can't complain . It looks bloody awesome too . I really like that body 👍

Gotta admit, looks very tempting for that pricetag. But would avoid running a brushed motor on 3s. They usually can't handle the increase in voltage. It's just the Esc that can handle the power not the motor itself. Maybe put a cheap but decent brushless motor in but keep the stock esc and just run it on 2s. The drive train will thank you for it and you will have a bit more speed and fun.

A few options to choose from. I'll try it 3s....but a cheap low Kv brushless is the way to go I think

Hi Phil. You know I was watching this thinking that it was a bit like my FTX Bugsta and then at the end you brought out the Carnage which is the same as the Bugsta. I think that they are good for the money but I upgraded to brushless and I have mashed the gears a few times. They are probably best left brushed and used as a starter RC for kids. Shame about the stone in the motor. My Bugsta has a great big hole in the bottom of the chassis so it's even worse with the standard motor with a hole. Don't understand why they would do that on an off road car. Also the gears aren't sealed very well so dirt goes in there too. Anyway I was just looking at my Bugsta as it was making a noise. Turns out I mashed the gears AGAIN! Look forward to seeing how you get on with it next time 😀

Yes Bugsta/Carnage... same platform. Took it out today to the same place, thought it was only fair! No issues with stones/dust etc... but agree, the big hole where the motor sits is not ideal! Keeps the CofG low though I suppose. I was impressed with the handling!

I have 2 of these and the gears shred after about 3 hours of play. Spares are impossible to buy, and very expensive if you do find them. Any small front end crash will rip off the front suspension. Saddest christmas ever for my kids as they were both broken in about 30 mins 😞

That's a bit of luck it was only a stone in the motor. I don't know why manufacturers don't add a little bit of mesh to stop that happening. Seeing as it's quite a common occurrence. 👍

Steering knuckle snapped on first ride of clipped a wall, not hard and fast so thought bad luck! Then fixed... onto some bumpy grass and the other side snapped. Defo only for tarmac or maybe dirty tarmac 😅I didnt do any jumps or anything.

These are good, although I'd keep it running on the stock battery. The motor gets too hot on 3s (3 Cell 11.1V)

TLDR - the plastics are made of cheese. The front knuckle arms are absolute garbage on these, they break at the slightest knock. We've just had a wheel and knuckle arm crack whilst running on some grass, which was pretty flat - no jumps or anything. Used it about 6 times and broken 2 front knuckle arms and now a wheel! Also been v difficult to get parts in current times. It can handle flat tarmac as long as you don't even have the slightest knock against anything; on that surface it is good fun. Take it off-road, by which I just mean some grass not jumps, then you're asking for trouble.

should the heatsink position like that on a brushed motor? mine comes with the top venting hole covered. Maybe that would have prevented the sand going in the motor? Which way is the correct way? Thanks!

The top venting hole should be open or it might overheat since the coil on a brushed motor is attached to the shaft not the frame. No airflow inside would isolate the heat

Run time is all dependent on battery size. But Brushless generally has a longer run time than a brushed

I just got one of these for the son for his 10th birthday. I have a Traxxas bandit with brushless motor (4370kv) & 3S lipo upgrade. Do you reckon I can use the Titan 12T motor as an upgrade for this Car? Its practically new (upgraded mine almost straight away) and I think from looking these have a 15T motor? Will also get a couple of 2S lipo for him so we have some decent run time. Thanks for the great review - helped me purchase something that wasnt shit like the other cheapie RC cars he's had.

I think a Titan 12T would be a decent 'mild' upgrade. These on 2s are pretty nice to run. Perfect for a 10yr old.

@@TomleyRC We've played with this car a bit on his birthday. Broke twice in two minutes. The arms are made from cheese and the screws pull out easily. Repaired it, put a 2S lipo in, and didnt even empty the battery and the motor (stock) is fried. car goes about 1/3 speed now. I let him run my bandit for a full battery with no breakages. We havent even hit anything yet. I'd say this car is very cheap / poorly designed and IMO better off spending extra on a Traxxas if you want anything decent quality. From my experience anyway.

Those little stones will definitely work their way in to small crevices. Nice rig tho! I was interested in buying couple of these for my sons. Glad it wasn’t anything serious. Definitely ruins play time.

I hate brushed motors! even with a net over it, rocks always get in. And when you have 2 x550's on your traxxas, you end up with a box full of broken 550's.
