Having worked in Steel Casting Foundry, the "fill" you are showing is actually the sprue side from the pour that has been cut & ground off. The smoothness of the grind would indicate no shrinkage in the gate or sprue. A good solid pour.

In the last couple years I’ve hade the fortune of owning half a dozen anvils, 5 of which were 200+ lbs new, cast anvils. Unfortunately, I’ve had to let them all go. 3 months ago, I purchased one of these anvils, just to fill some custom orders, and I’ve been beyond pleased with its performance. No, it isn’t hard enough, or big enough, but I’ve forged 4 blacksmith hammers on it (all over 2 lbs), and it has done just fine. I’ve also made several sets of tongs, chisels and punches on it. It’s definitely not a be-all, end-all anvil, but it does great in the short term!

I was fortunate enough to have a friend that hooked me up with a 98 lbs 12×8×4 chunk of mild steel for 20$ . It makes a great anvil!!!

That's the same model of anvil I'm working on right now, which isn't that bad considering I've only been at this for a few months. I guess I got pretty lucky with my particular Anvil though, seeing as it looks very cleanly casted, especially compared to some others I've seen. There wasn't really any filler on mine, however the Hardy hole, and the pritchel hole were a little gunkey. Only issue with mine, as with every other one of this model, was the paint on the horn that I definitely needed to remove. At the end of the day, it's not cast iron so I'm thankful for that.

Mine arrived on the 3rd. Your anvil had more packing material than mine, but more box damage. The plastic "dragon skin" was still attached to the oiled surface of my anvil. I ran a file all over mine and found no soft filler areas. For my use, and my space, it'll be about perfect. First thing I did was hit the horn with a flap disk, and part of the edge to round it out. I look forward to see what you do with it as you certainly have more experience than I.

The word on the side is Italian for steel my understanding is that they are surplus molds cast in India. I have the 220# one I have used it about a year and am very happy with it. I think for th..te price they are a very good place to start. The Hardie hole on the large one is 1 inch as well as the pritchel hole. The one I have doesn't have any filler in it that I can tell . I did have to spend a little time with a grinder before I was happy with the round horn but very satisfied with it now . Mine came in a carton with a 3/4 plywood bottom strapped to a pallet . I bought one a while back, it is a decent little anvil. It arrived with the box looking like a crushed rhino with the horn protruding from the top edge. Funny on the E-bay listing it is called a cast iron anvil in the picture and a cast steel in the title description.
@ChristCenteredIronworks5 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is a weird discrepancy
@BrianDaleNeeley5 жыл бұрын
That is probably just the seller doesn't know anything about smithing (or any related craft). Iron is steel and steel is iron, right? They said it was cast and they cast iron... plus cast sounds important here and it's another word to pad the description. A big paragraph looks more impressive that a couple lines. With a little detective work and two or three examples from different sellers (if you can find them), you could probably reconstruct the two line description from the original manufacturer.

the round hole at the base of the horn is not really a pritchel hole, it's an access-way for the extension rod on your ratchet wrench to reach the mounting hole to bolt the front foot to your stand, the hardy hole provides the same access for the rear foot's mounting hole. but I agree that with some talented welding of build-up around the hole it could make a serviceable pritchel hole.

If the used market is no good in your area, and the only local option is HF, this isn't a terrible alternative considering you'd need to spend at least twice as much to step up to an NC or Kanca anvil. It's certainly better than the HF anvil shaped object, and maybe a bit better than a chunk of RR track.

Pretty annoying that this one has such a rough and out of round horn, not to mention the very large repair. It certainly doesn't look like a new anvil to me - it looks like a return that was given a rudimentary repair and resurface on the face and sent on to the next sucker. That might explain why some are blue and some are black. I wonder if the black anvils are the new ones and the blue ones the refurbs? That ball bearing rings nice and musical when it rebounds off the face, so this might be a keeper.

I also find the pritchel hole is lower than the face which marks up the workpiece when using it. I ground about 1/2 inch diameter around it into the face to make it more useable. Real Italian pattern anvils have a smooth transition from face to horn.
