Next! Seems to be a decent beginner's anvil, Roy. I started with a piece of train rail. Didn't save it, but passed it on to a future smith when he was 11 years old. That was about thirty years ago. I'm sure that he passed it on, and it's probably on it's 15th owner br now!

Thanks for all these videos about these anvils, I just bought an 88lb one of these on the website which is was having a sale and am looking foreword to using it when it arrives. I built an anvil stand based on the design by Dog House Forge. Two 15"x15" pieces of 3/4" ply laminated together. Then about 13 layers of 2x3's around the perimeter, and pack filled with 100+ pounds of dirt. Topped with more 2x3's over the top, and another piece of 3/4 ply. Seems pretty solid, and adds mass to the anvil

There's definitely a lot to like about those little guys. If I had an abundance of space and cash I'd buy one to have the clean edges available. One of my Peter Wright's previous owners seriously ruined every single edge on it. As it is now I'm using a secondary block of unknown metal to serve as an anvil with one clean sharp edge that serves about well enough.

I believe it. From my limited understanding there was a period a generation or two back where anvils were essentially worthless and they were ABUSED before being scrapped because the value on the material was relatively high, causing the scarcity we enjoy today. At least, that's what I've been able to piece together after poring through a handful of videos and a little bit of reading on the subject.

If I were going to put soft edge on it would be on heal as it's thiner there and softened edge won't be used w heavy hammer strikes .

There's enough beef in it that breaking the horn off is unlikely. If you're swinging a big enough hammer to do that, then you should use as bigger anvil.

I just recently picked up one of these from amazon. I bought it because it was a cheap way of getting a European pattern anvil with the handy square horn. I can tell you I am very impressed with it so far. It seems to offer similar efficiency as one of my larger 150 pound antique anvils. Mine seems to be plenty hard (dented one of my harder forging hammer without leaving any mark on the face of the anvil) and it does not have any visible filler material on the sides to cover any poorly cast areas, which is quite clear on the one you possess. I've also noticed something interesting, although not sure if it is always the case. There is a large price gap between the anvil amazon is offering, about $180 versus Ebay's $120. Could it be the case that ebay is selling the anvils that may not have passed quality control with more flaws for a lower price? Was the anvil in the video purchased from ebay? If so this might hold true as mine is plenty hard with no visible casting defects. Can anyone else verify this? Thanks for taking the time to review this anvil, and I hope the monthly giveaway works out well. 👍 Edit: forgot yo say pounds after 150, I dont have 150 anvils lol!
@johnnymissfire84645 жыл бұрын
I picked up one of these from Ebay and it did not have any fillers like the one in this video. I did however notice a what looked like a small crack in the face when i cleaned it up. After a little bit of beating on it it now looks like a casting flaw that was filled with weld before it was milled flat. The seller gave me the choice of an exchange or a 50 percent refund. I took the refund so i got the anvil for $66 with free shipping.

Not bad! at least it has an actual horn and not a duckbill platypus for a horn like my 15 yr old Harbor Freight Russian anvil, and has a conventional square hardy instead of the offset angled one I have. I can tell by the sound it has good rebound, I just makes me wonder what kind of damage if any? Did you do to Olga? that couldn't have possibly good for the old gal.
