It isn’t necessary, but certainly improves success of the cuttings surviving. Same goes for planting tree saplings with root gel.

Well my cattails and dogwoods are under snow drifts. Is there any trees that grow in those same soil conditions??

@creekbottomlandmgmt I need to add thermal protection and have a tree canopy. Once winter sets in all the deer leave. There's about 160 acres of cattails, willows, etc. There's patches of basswood but not enough for wintering habitat. The deer around here travel for miles insearch of pockets of woods once the first snows hit. I'm finding put that the young bucks I'm passing are relocating to these areas. So those landowners are enjoying an endless supply of big bucks filling in the vacuum created when the neighbors have taken out the current dominant bucks. So I must have woods

What do you think they should be eating? Everything dies where they forage during daylight hours. They have to eat what is available. They can't live if they were to walk around green fields all day
