We have been planting trees all over our property. Apples persimmons pears chestnuts oaks. We planted rod this yr and alot of silky dog woods as well. Plus we got alot of trees from our county water and soil conservation. Great place for trees

We planted a willow screening here in WI and watered every 2 days through the drought last year. We got about 70% success on 500 shrubs. The survivors are looking good this year though!

In SE,WI, red osier dogwood grows great, however the deer just attack it. I now cage all my shrubs. Tube all deciduous trees, the bucks are merciless.

They are awesome...but have to get caged for sure!

When do you pull off the cages?
@Treeplanter73Ай бұрын
@michaeljohnson2922 Good morning,I cage shrubs till there about 5ft tall. After that there pretty hardy and can take some browsing pressure.

Currently growing some ROD from cuttings in pots and hopeful they are ready to go in the ground by mid August. Bunch of fencing fron previous owners will be put to use!

That's perfect Alex! Especially right before Fall that fencing is 100% necessary... Sounds like you are getting a LOT done this year...I bet very rewarding!!

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 the classic 3 years of work in one year Jeff! It's an experience being that I live over 3hrs away and have a regular job but have to show that it can be done!

Great points Jeff. It wasn't until I went from 300 trees/yr to 30 and gaged them that I was getting a return for my efforts. Appreciate your channel very much.

Hello Jeff and Dylan. Have you ever seen or encouraged landowners use seed to regenerate ag land with trees and shrubs instead of buying seedlings and having to cage them individually? I have 10 acres of ag land I want to convert to switch, shrubs, trees, and some small food plots. I am considering buying some tree and shrub seed to see if it would grow and provide enough growth to avoid the deer from eating all of it. If so, do you have any recommendations of seed companies that provide shrub and tree seed? Some very sketchy sites. Thank you!

Man has food plot failed this year that heat dome hit WV and the seeds I put down and plot I sprayed…still dirt and we have had a week of rain. I missed the call tonight and I’m kicking myself had family issues couldn’t get away.

Is there a specific drag you recommend to cover seed? Noticed on your bag you can cover some seed

Hey Jeff, could I get your thoughts on if I should put my mineral mix out for this month. I put it out monthly since the season ended but curious if I should continue it for July and August. And thoughts?

Jeff how far away should I put corn from each other and when should I start
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97517 ай бұрын
Hi Dylan! It's almost too late to plant corn. 26"-30" spacing for rows and seeds should be roughly 8-12" apart. We've planted as late as July 5th with great rain and an 85 day corn variety.

Do you necessarily have to protect seedling oaks from deer? Or do they avoid it for more preferable browse?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97517 ай бұрын
That greatly depends on the location and how much other browse is available. For example in some areas white pines aren't touched...in other areas you have to cage them. Oaks are the same way. And if they are near a food plot then they have to be protected just about anywhere.

Does red osier dogwood grow in Mississippi?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751Ай бұрын
Not sure on that one ..
@ndoering17 ай бұрын
If I may add, I believe choosing a cultivar that will grow tall enough that they can't reach the top is necessary for red osier. Otherwise they will just stand there and eat it to death. You would never be able to remove the fence on short varieties in my area.
