It is really good for 50 cent paint! I probably should have called the video painting with 50 cent paint, but there are a lot of places that still sell it for around $1.00, and I don't know any place that sells it for more than a dollar, so I put a $1.00 to be safe. Lol

When using cheap acrylics vs expensive acrylics, you really can't tell when you have a skilled artist. I've had paintings for around about 30 years and the paints have not faded. A few of the brands I have used are FolkArt acrylic craft paints and Delta acrylics. By the way, your painting looks awesome! That is what I mean by a skilled artist! You really wouldn't know that you used inexpensive acrylics!

Thank you very much Michelle, I appreciate it! I agree, I have had some of my Apple Barrell paintings for over 20 years with no problem. Just because lightfast testing hasn't been done on them, doesn't mean some of them don't happen to be lightfast. So far I have been lucky with mine. That being said, I don't sell my art that was made with this paint just in case. I think you are correct about skill, I have seen other artists online who create hyper realistic pieces with craft paints, and you would have no way of knowing if the artist didn't mention it!

I have a terrible habit of wiping my brush on the sweat pants I wear when I'm painting. Lets just say that there are a few hundred color "swipes" across the right leg. Those sweat pants have been through a washer ... lord a hundred plus times. Hot water and soap, agitated and the colors haven't faded. Color fast they are. I've also added it to some two part resin to blend patches on marble. I do stone repair in old building restoration. Cheap and they work.

You know, come to think of it, I have a couple of pairs of pants like that myself and you are right, there is nothing getting those paints out of them! I had never heard of anybody using these paints the way you describe, very cool! Just goes to show how versatile they really are!!

Little tip acrylic paints actually contain plastics in them so whenever you get a stain on them you should try to hand wash them (cold water) over and over until the paint fades out as much as you can get it and then put it to dry. The heat will melt and set the paint so if you put it to wash and dry before you got most of the paint out there nothing budging it. Hope this helps! Its something I learned from my art teacher since all of our clothes would always get stained from painting.

That's not a bad idea! I have had to substitute these for my other paints in the past when I have run out of certain colors, and they do work with other paints! Been buying the 'dollar store' acrylic paint which comes dirt-cheap (3.99 euros for 16 pcs x 32ml). But you do get what you pay for though, that much is obvious. The colors are very dull and very translucent (not a lot of pigments in it) once it dries up. So I'm using a little "trick" to get that bit more "umpf" out of it: I pre-paint the background (after applying 3 layers of dollar store gesso < not very good gesso either). Meaning each different section of the theme already gets a layer (or 2) of basic color of what the main color on top will be. For example: blue sky = blue pre-paint. Green grass: green pre-paint. Dark spaces: black, dark brown or grey pre-paint layer. And so on. This makes the white streaking less obvious, specially on big surfaces like the sky, and the paint LOOKS less translucent since there's already a somewhat matching colored background underneath it. Now saving for the more expensive end of paint. The brushes of the dollar store aren't all that bad, but there's not a lot of varsity in them so I'll be buying some elsewhere too. The canvasses of the dollar store aren't all that bad either, but then: I haven't bought or used expensive ones yet so I can't really compare.😅 Cheers and thanks for the informative video!

Fair warning, this will likely be a long comment. I'm learning about urban/on location sketching. I've been doing it with pen & ink for outlines and water based marker for color. I've decided I want to try acrylic paint. I'm still going to attempt to sketch the way I normally would except using a very thin pointed brush for making the outlines, using it like a pen and using acrylic as the medium for color. I have some questions below. Thanks. 👍😁 * What type of brushes do I need? By this I mean what do the bristles need to made of? * How long does a layer of Apple Barrel acrylic paint take to fully dry? * With soft body acrylic does one work from light to dark or dark to light? * Wal-mart has several brands of acrylic paint that are in the same type of tube as Apple Barrel. Are they similar in quality to Apple Barrel? * Is there any other $0.50 to $1.00 brand that I can buy a good deep black from?
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 4 жыл бұрын
Hey James, thanks for commenting! Those are some very good questions, and I will try to answer them as fully as possible, to the best of my ability. *Brushes- I usually use synthetic hair taklon brushes. You will likely want an assortment of small sized round brushes as well as some liner/rigger brushes. You will want to thin the paint down a bit with water until you get an ink like consistency which will make it much easier to get smooth outlines with your brushes. This is only when you are trying to do thinner lines, you will likely not need to thin the paints much otherwise. *As far as dry time, thinner layers, usually no more than 1-2 minutes, typically less than that. But this really depends on a lot of different factors, including what kind of climate you live in. If it's humid where you are, it may take longer. * For the most part, you can work with soft bodied acrylic the same way you would heavy bodied acrylics. You can work from light to dark, or dark to light, it can go either way. You may want to test the opacity of each color on a scrap surface before laying light on top of dark, but typically speaking, I have never had trouble using light over dark with these, at least within a couple of layers. * These and the Folk Art paints are my favorite as far as the different kinds of craft paints go. *As far as a good, deep black goes, I'm not sure. Typically speaking in this price range you will have a higher filler/binder to pigment ratio so the pigment will not be as vibrant. This can be quite evident in darker colors. So, I'm not sure what to recommend there. Your best bet may be a small jar of India ink which might cost more but could last a long time and can be used over these paints for outlines. I think that was everything, I hope my answers have helped!

Yeah, I probably should have, Lol, but it's not always my preferred way to work, sometimes I use tape, sometimes I don't. I like to be able to move my work easily, a personal preference. This paper is a pretty good paper that I use often, and though it curved a bit while painting, I knew it would flatten out on it's own just fine once it dried. Also, I wasn't using lightfast materials and this is a piece that I don't plan on selling so I wasn't too worried about it.

Wow beautiful! Why do some people say that after painting on canvas it cracks? Is it true. ? My daughter wants to do a painting party for 5 friends and paint the nativity scene and it has lots of black , white and blue.
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I think it depends on how things are layered and how much they have been thinned with water. Because they are a craft paint, the binding agent may not be as strong as it would be in an artist acrylic which could cause some cracking, especially on a flexible surface such as a stretched canvas. I have not experienced this personally because I don't recall ever using them on stretched canvas. I think I used to use them on canvas panel when I first started out, and never had issues with cracking that I can recall, but canvas panel is a bit sturdier so that could be why. I only remember seeing cracking one time and it was a painting I did on paper (it was not a high quality paper) back when I was a teenager. I had painted a thick layer of paint and somehow the painting had gotten folded a bit and it caused some cracking in the area with thick paint. I would recommend using a sturdy surface to prevent buckling and cracking.

I am mainly self-taught. I did go to school but it was late in life and I was already working in my current style when I went. I like realism and the school I went to doesn't really teach realism, so my style is something that I taught myself. I already knew how to draw and paint and was already selling my work, so basically I learned about art history, collaboration, and conceptual art in school. The rest was stuff I taught myself before I went to school.

Caution: Artist at Play no problem. The information is a little buried on plaid’s website. I think they use crayola type pigments in the AB because they say that they are totally non toxic and good for mommy and me projects. I use my AB paints for crafting with my little niece. They don’t go to waste and she lights up when I break out the colors.

@@nolitawineman1195 , thank you for the information, that makes a lot of sense! I can see why they would want to have non-toxic options. I feel like I had read a bit about that on their site when I first did this video, because I also have some of the FolkArt paints, but I couldn't find any specifics such as lightfast ratings. I wish they would make the information more easily accessible.

Caution: Artist at Play i wish so too. I should have mentioned that Joann sells some of the FolkArt mediums as well. Use coupons to get them for as little as 50 cents. It’s hard to stretch a dollar these days and every little bit helps.

I’m debating on getting these paints to do a pointillism piece. Would this paint work for that?
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 4 жыл бұрын
Like most other acrylics, they do dry fairly quickly. They dry slower than heavy body artist acrylics, but fast enough to be able to paint right over them if needed. I think they would work for what you are looking to do with them!
@Yunkikihihi

What’s causing all those crumbs? Is that the paint drying so fast?
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay Жыл бұрын
That's part of it, and it could also be because the paints that I was using here were really old, so there were actually a few chunks in the paint. I don't think it would be much of an issue with newer paint, but dry time is always a factor too. It didn't really cause an issue with my final piece as I removed them while I worked (kinda hard to tell because it's sped up). Working fast helps, and having newer paint definitely helps! Lol.

My question is do you blend then with water or use as is?
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 4 жыл бұрын
A little bit of both, depends on the area, I did use some water to help blend out the sky, but not a ton because these paints are kind of thin to begin with. In the grass I didn't use a whole lot of water unless I was trying to get really precise lines, and in that case I would add a bit of water for a more ink like consistency. Most of the time they are thin enough to blend just on their own, but you really just have to gauge it depending on what you are doing at the time.

@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 3 жыл бұрын
If you buy good paints and don't thin them down too much, you don't need to worry about cracking or fading. Acrylic is a strong paint and doesn't crack as easily as oils. Make sure the colors you get have high lightfast ratings because those are less likely to fade. If you do want to protect your work from dust and grime I recommend Krylon spray. They have varying sprays depending on if you want glossy, mat or UV protection. You can usually find them at any art supply store.
