I made up an awning for our 6m Ducato van using a 3x3m Shade Sail, attaching it to two rings fitted to a rail, that is clamped like you did to those roof lugs. It takes longer than 4 minutes to set up but not too bad. I stand on the rear bumper to clip the shade sail to the rear ring, then stand on the sliding door floor to fasten on the 2nd clip. Then put up poles with two guys on each. Only cost £35 + poles and roof bits.

We use the Blink system inside the van allows us to keep a check on the van in storage, and the dog when we are out, the other useful feature is if you go into camera settings it tells you what the temp it is inside the van so if we deam it to hot or cold we can hot or cold foot it back to the van…

I recommend getting or making an end panel for your canopy, which you can tie/zip/loop round the canopy 'arm'. In my experience the shade a canopy casts very quickly moves away from the area you want it to cover, so an end panel gives flexibility to add more 'sun block' to whichever end of the canopy you need it.

Quick word of warning, every time and I mean every time you roll the awning out fix it to the ground with the tie down straps straight away. I had a fancy wind out Fiamma awning on our old MoHo, I had it out one day but not fixed to the ground there was a slight gust of wind it lifted up a bit and went back down. I thought I’ll fix that to the ground, as I went for the pegs etc there was another gust and over the roof it went. I did manage to get the spares needed and fix it. But did I learn my lesson? Of course not, I normally fixed it to the ground every time after that. But the next time it happened I’d rolled it out but got distracted by someone saying hello. We both stood there right next to it as it went over the roof again. It went over so quick we didn’t manage to get hold of it before it was gone. This time it was written off, it cost a fortune for the replacement. Both times there was only a slight breeze, but it was blowing straight into the awning. If the wind lifts it as it goes up it catches more and more wind and gets faster and faster and it goes surprisingly quickly. We have a new MoHo now, it’s also got a fancy roll out Thule awning. But this one is a metre and a half longer than the one on the old MoHo, so if there’s the slightest breeze my wife has to come out and keep hold of it while I fix it down. If it’s too windy it stays rolled up, and if its out and the wind gets too strong it gets rolled back into its box. But when it’s raining, or really hot and sunny it’s invaluable for shelter or shade, you’ll be really glad you’ve got it.

What you may find as we and others did that you will need to weigh the awning down. You’ll find the awning will be a game changer..sun aside, it can give you a dry area to step out onto. Does the brand offer a ‘gutter’ to stop the rain splashing off the van roof? I’ve had my awning 2 years now with twist lock poles and had no issues. To tie down the poles for light conditions use balled end shock cord wrapped and pegged around the bottom of the upright poles. For really windy conditions I throw a rope over the middle length wise, curling it around the rafter poles and pegging each end. Have sustained 80kmh winds so far. 🤞🏼

Nice and simple on the defender with roof bars for the tent in place on vanguard bars. used the bits off the bar stop to locate in grooves plus at hird just in case like you fitted. Stood up to Maydays bank holiday weather well. Just soked mysellf when putting the cover back over it will know next time. The black square bits are difficult to find long grass if they drop off if you pull the poles apart but did find it. I cant complain. yes I am playing catch up on the vids. good to see you both again. the problem with no holes in bottom of legs. tie / loop strings through where poles pickup on outside of awning and peg down that way.

A couple of tips about the Blink cameras... 1. There are two lights that illuminate on the camera itself (a blue one and a red one) which stick out at night like a pork in a synagogue, alerting ne'er- do-wells that they are there. On mine I have turned off the blue light with a switch inside the camera and covered the red light with a small piece of insulating tape. 2. The motion sensors are very sensitive and the zone exclusion feature and sensitivity settings are about as much use as an ashtray on a motor bike. Unless you park in a very quiet area the sensors will be going off all the time. 3. You need to get rechargeable batteries, the Blink camera I have covering my front door goes off roughly 6 to 8 times a day and my duracell batteries only last about 3 months. 4. When you are away from Fanny and operating on 4G remote viewing, interaction with the system takes much longer to connect and access than when connected to WiFi. Having said all that, the picture quality is very good (its as good as my hardwired $1000 CCTV system)and don't forget you can set one up inside the van to keep an eye on AJ & Summer whilst your out exploring. Sorry if this comment is a bit like War & Peace, I'm just trying to help!

Pro tip, drop one corner of the canopy substancially when it rains/is risk of rain, then the water will flow off in one place instead of making a bulge in the middle. For the cameras, most of them are crap, but they still do the job. I saw one girl-vanlifer install a Panasonic system that you just stuck to the inside of the windows, that looked nice

Hi Ladies, I bumped into your channel sometime ago and subscribed because I think you're an entertaining and well suited couple, informative, great videos , videography and editing! I've camped and caravaned for many years, driven and towed down to France and Spain etc., but am considering a van. My towing was almost always Citroen Xantias which were usually "towcars of the year" and then moved onto C5's when Xantia was discontinued. This was where I fell out of love with Citroen and it wasn't all their fault. The EU (and I'm a remainer) forced manufacturers to really start to control emissions and the tech was raw which resulted in a drop in reliability. TBH I think most manufacturers struggled so won't blame Citroen. Personally, I enjoy all your videos whether travelling, taking in scenes (photography and drone work amazing), practical work like this or your livechats, they're all very good. One little worry Lou, given the hassles you've had with your van I wonder when you last weighed it ? Just concerned that fully loaded, fuelled, watered, food, snacks for Em and pets that perhaps the engine is working on max weight all the time ? It's not a criticism and please don't answer in public, more an observation that may help. Anyway, continue with all the vids, I look forward to Sunday evening and stay safe, thanks to both of you again 👍

Hi. I’ve have 6 Blink cameras and my battery’s are about 15 months old and still going strong. I use a small 32Gb USB flash drive plug in instead of subscription. You can easily pop this into a laptop to keep the clip. Also each time you view the camera it will save it to the USB. 256Gb flash drive is max size and you can use I delete my recordings about once per week. One final thing… in General Settings I switch LED status to Always Off. this way it does not attract attention from passers by when the cameras are activated or you are just viewing. Another security tip… if you use iPhone. Is to hide an Apple AirTag in the van and you can always use this to track should you have the misfortune for it being stolen 😊. Cheers Nigel

We have had our awning for several years and the only problem was a gust of wind lifting it up and slamming it back down because I didn't guy it down, so the only bit that got damaged was the flexi plastic hinge on the leg ( just one ) never had issues with the twist lock system, the pins that locate in the awning track at the end can bend but not a real problem, on mine it also has an awning track for extra end wall or longer coverage, suggestion is buy a spare plastic hinge, it fits the legs and spreader bar.

As for the Blink, I highly recommend using the USB storage. There are next to no benefits to the cloud subscription other than the fact you can't save to the USB storage at the same time as viewing manually. Some good videos out there on it. I stick mine up with magnets on the rare occasion I use them, but appreciate not everyone would want to!

I quite like the technical ones. In fact that is how I found you when looking how to fit my ladder to the van. I have to confess to to skipping some (but not all) of your travel ones. I can't really understand why people rant about videos they don't like, just skip and chill, you don't have to watch... Anyway, useful info about the awning. I was curious how it would work out. I have a H3 Relay and already have a Fiamma roof rack with awning mounts, so logically, if I could stomach the price, a Fiamma awning is the way to go. I probably would still go Fiamma after seeing this. Oddly though, I may not attach to my existing mounts, the H3 is just too high. That would also factor in to the awning you have. I am mostly solo, so ease of setup is important. The biggest issue with the H3 is drips after rain when you open the side door. I had thought of making a custom aluminium deflector over the door, but think that an awning even when not opened, if mounted to the side would double up as a deflector. Curious if anyone else following you has the same dilemma. All the best and happy travels.

Small point because if the weather is bad you probably won't have the awning out, but if so keep it on an angle away from the van to divert water. Also the anchor point for the poles is important as it doesn't take much wind to lift them. Never leave overnight or during the day if winds are expected. ( or even if they aren't) My factory installed 2006 Fiama wind out awning is 17 years old and still works perfectly.

7:13 Looking at the foot, shouldn't be too hard to DIY some platform attachment you can shove tent pegs through, if you want to use such methods to secure it. Worst case you could just get some really big spikes and duct tape them to the end, sort of works if you don't mind removing them later for harder surfaces.

I reckon an external drive is the best option Lou, an M.2 Nvme 1tb is cheap and used as an external for under £50 in 4K.And you can dump 80% of content 24/7/365 for the next 6 years easy. I've used dummy cams before as they cheap to replace if attacked. Got the numpties in the act with the real cams and passed to those who deal with such detritus.

Hey Lou, we use the blink cameras for the outside of our house. Ours do have an internal storage, working on a loop. We change the batteries every couple of months, but that's with a lot of comings and goings outside the house. Good idea for the van. Amazon do covers and bracket accessories also. Keep the vids coming. Always look forward to your crazy adventures 👍😊😊

The only issue with Blink. It can not be used unless you pay their monthly subscription fees! Which I feel you should be at least to use if not for the storage of the video.

I agree the fiamma wind out awning's are rubbish a puff of wind is enough to break them I even had storm straps on mine but it still broke

We have the blink cameras in the house to check on the dogs when we leave them. We have had them for about 18 months and the batteries seem to be going strong.

Do the cameras have night vision to see what's going on in the dark? Great idea to have them for sure!
