Well, fluxgate, depending on mark and model, can be very sensitive to how the boat is leaning or pitching. I had a Raymarine fluxgate fitted and it would differ about 60 deg depending on the speed (pitch) of my boat. Absolutley useless in my case so I had to change to a Furuno GPS-compass. Besides that fluxcompasses gives the magnetic heading (at best) and needs to be corrected in order to be used with radar overlay in the plotter. If possible try to find a GPS-compass instead. The Vector SeaPilot is as small and neat as possible to make them.

Andy, as soon as you mentioned the resistors and capacitors in your autopilot, my first thought was that you'll need to replace all the electrolytic capacitors as they're prone to failing due to age. I see you've mastered the art of the CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) template.

Good Afternoon Mr. Skipper. That Autopilot you have is excellent and the good thing should always be the relief, the guardian for when the first one gets tired. Be careful, regarding Raymarine autopilots I observe and read many complaints, personally I think there are hidden stars. P.S. Take note of this one and do your research and comparisons T2 Pilot Ram /T2 12v Simrad. hydraulic. I also want you to take notes on the Navigation Software that is giving a lot of talk Orca Core and Orca Display 2, one of the two comes with a gyroscopic course correction sensor and that is very important to the Autopilot signal. Greetings to all your family. You feed Oliver who grows quickly, the first one is not far behind either. 🏴❤️

Thank you for this video! And, time for nostalgia, spotted a Westerly Conway and a Westerly Centaur... My parents own these type of boat (in reverse order obviously) and I learn to sail on them, as a teen on the Centaur and as a young adult on the Conway as my parents lent her to me (a great way to make her fully ready, thinks fixed, when they take her for their own holidays...😁)

May be jumping gun but could make a straight sided tank depth of hole then have it come out and have tank take some of wider space between floor and old tank.

I've just seen your channel and looked back at when you got this Bowman. I used to sail with someone who owned a very similar Bowman in the late 1990s. I think it was kept on the river Fowey not far from where you bought it from near Dartmouth. At the time it had a blue hull blue with beautiful teak decks and an old engine that was forever trying to retire. Centre cockpit ketch like your. I wonder if was the same boat? I have fond memories of leaping off the boat into the river, crewing it in Falmouth week and sailing to France. It was a lovely boat!

With electronics the truth is that capacitors have a finite life. At a point it is "easier" to replace them all. The quotes are because it may not be easy but at least you are not chasing issue later as another old cap fails. Look for leaks and bulges. Likely that tech is telling you the same. If he offers a sheet to buy a whole new set it would be worth the effort to replace them all.

Possible options for the autopilot. Diesel gas tank: After making detailed measurements and sketches, could you have glued narrow strips of wood or plywood cutouts or cardboard or a combination for a skeletal mock-up? If the tank has not leaked, any reasons not to use as originally intended? How safe is a diesel bladder tank in the existing keel?

We considered building it the way you suggest but decided a plywood mockup was a better more reliable analogue.

Nice one guys lots of positives and progress, excellent, must make you feel good. I recently changed boat and I have an ancient Pinta autopilot, circa 1970’s. It has an excellent motor and means to engage and,disengage but the brains is not working correctly so a bit like yours. If I turn mine on it goes hard astarboard and then blows a fuse. The compass has light sensitive diodes which detect when it goes,off,course,so I’m changing those but ultimately I will hook up a Raymarine brains box and a fluxgate compass but keep the mechanics. My steering is all gear boxes and prop shafts so bullet proof, just old electronics. You probably know this but capacitors do have a life span so if there are any then good,to change those first as often they are no longer working. Great news on the tank, brilliant. Andy UK

I haven't been closely following your page. So, please accept my apologies if I am commenting out of turn. You've already explored Europe quite a lot. So, maybe you should wait until December to leave the UK and then sail to the Caribbean. That way you can avoid the issue with the orcas at Gibraltar, do a major shakedown cruise crossing the Atlantic, fix things at the British Virgin Islands and start getting used to higher tropical temperatures and humidity. I have been watching other sailing channels that have been near the equator in the South Pacific. They have all complained about how hot it has become over the last few years. The South Pacific is warming 2 to 3 times faster than the rest of the world. By the early 2030s, the region will be a "living hell" in the summer months. So, if you want to sail the South Pacific, you should go as soon as possible.
@SailingMelody2 ай бұрын
We like that idea but we do t have the experience yet to do an Atlantic crossing so soon. We’re planing to spend more time training ourselves and preparing the boat more by sailing in the Mediterranean until we feel confident to make that crossing
@anthonylancina38992 ай бұрын
Hi All, great episode, good tank solution, but why don’t you maximise the tank capacity by coming higher under the sole boards. Can never have enough hidden fuel capacity! Probably already too late but I would make it as big as is practical. Best regards from a fellow old boat fanatic!
@SailingMelody2 ай бұрын
I have come slightly higher but we also need to maintain access to the outlets from the two decorations water tanks on port and starboard and leave enough room for the starter battery bank and tool storage.

Get a new Raymarine autopilot, dump the old system, I retired 9yrs ago with a intermittent working 6000 system, I hand steered all the way to the Med, then with hours and hours messing around hand steered the Balearic’s for 4yrs, before I bought new. Trust me do it now and it will be worth it’s weight in gold. 😀👍🇪🇸

It’s a money thing I’m afraid. You’re dead right that is what we need but there are about 2000 “critical” things of which the autopilot is just one, so we work with what we can afford, with the time we have and the money we have and the skills we have in the hope that one day we will have more money or more time or more skill or ideally more of all three 😂
@robertmoreland26382 ай бұрын
@@SailingMelody There isn’t 2000 critical things 👍and after 5yrs of doing it full time you’ll find out as well. 1 an oversized anchor and 60m of chain, 40m warp, powerful windless. 2 Kedge anchor with 5m of chain, 25m warp.
