Ref your Hydrovane , Teulu Tribe have just had to make adjustments to their solar arch fittings to accommodate the vane which looked very expensive and far from easy for them to do, but in their opinion obviously worth it for the extra crew member. I’m afraid you are going to have to bite the bullet one day for yours to fit the yawl layout

What a great video. I think you captured the essence of family life whuile sailing. Just the sound of wind, waves, and the boat were calming. The bright sunny days also made your video pop with vivid color and sharp detail, but I don't see you in sunglasses that often. I used to eschew sunglasses while sailing. Ultimately, I developed cataracts in both eyes and required surgery with lens replacement to restore my eyesight, try not to make my mistake.

You had better weather than we did so Thankyou for showing us the beautiful coastline. Ironing spinnaker material works as well as ironing a plastic bag… not. Tape is not very sticky and only used for quick repairs however if you round the ends apply a patch both sides and then sew the edges within the patch it is as good as new. Bobbin tension is very important sewing spinnaker material so keep it loose. Wipe your sewing needles with acetone every few minutes to get rid of glue build up. Tape doesn’t like salty wet sails so clean and dry the area first.
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 4 ай бұрын
You'll be pleased to know I didn't iron it.... I meant heat the tape up to make the glue a bit more sticky because it was very old but I will be doing a proper repair over winter. Thanks for the advice very much appreciated 🥰

It's obvious that you are beginning to do your thing without any worries about how some of your followers judge how you do it YOUR way.....I sense that your following will boom as time goes on from a slow start. Look at sailing Catalpa, they have really endured a long period of slow growth and have recently enjoyed a boost, albeit that they have less followers than you, they have boosted thier followers by involving their kids in the vids. This is great education/development for the kids and its boosted thier membership heaps. Love your stuff. Go guys!

lovley fyi move the tack of the mizzen staysail across to the windward side so the sail leans a little on the main sail you get a better slot across it and the mizzen. much underestimated sail on sketches and yawls very power full and safe to manage. the fun bit is the sheet to the end of the mizzen boom well al of you

I agree, it keeps a slot for each sail then….different boats = different arrangements, but I have used a block off the end of the mizzen boom as a mizzen staysail sheet lead - might be worth a look when you get the chance. Mizzen staysail has to be dropped before giving then reset on the other side…. Great weather ex Fowey, best time for trying these things. Keep up the good work.

I mentioned to you before, the tack of the mizzen staysail should come down to a pad-eye on the weather deck, forward of the main mast. This will stop the boom tearing a hole in the staysail. The tack of my mizzen staysail has a metre-long strop to attach it to the weather deck pad-eye.
@SailingMelody

Yes David. We’re playing around with different setups depending on the wind angle and what works with our enclosure. We tried it on the windward side with a long strop and with the wind angle on the day it wasn’t right.

Was it just not properly seated on the roller, or could a bow plate be required? Edit: Or maybe it's just a deceptive camera angle.

When beating upwind try not actually using the mizzen. If the main is sheeted in tight then the mizzen has to be sheeted beyond the centreline to keep the a lot. We find it same or netter speed without the mizzen and we can point higher. If strong wind we will furl the main totality then beat up wind on genoa (or reefed genoa) and mizzen. This then balances the boat nicely. Maybe give it a try as most ketch rigged boats the mizzen is useless past 70 degrees apparent wind angle. It just kills the slot from the main

congrats for finally living on water after so much work for years ! I check only seldom on your channel and want to praise you for what you have done in this episode ,which most sailing channels fail to do and you could ,likely should, expand : You had times in this episode, where one would hear nature sounds ,not 'blended' in background music/noise . the taste in music is different for many ,hence for some it is annoying noise. you have a good musician on board ,who is thereby part of your journey . I would highly recommend to use only his music and otherwise the natural sounds you encounter on your voyages ,not something downloaded ,labelled as music ( annoying noise for others ), actually not part of your journey . the self played music of the good musician on board is an authentic part of the journey ! if you contemplate and research ,you will find ,that nature provides wonderful ,true background music, especially for sailors and this even in many dramatic and romantic and thoughtful and peaceful shades . no need for unrelated ,downloaded noise . related natural atmosphere 'flair' of sounds and rhythms are far better and you can distinguish your channel by exploring and sharing that . for a time ,when you are to tired or occupied to produce content ,you might ask the new owner of your 'Steel Melody' ,to send you some update and this might be interesting for some of your longtime viewers and supporters . There is , as well ,worthwhile content to share ,concerning related fields . check out the wonderful website and activities of http:/plasticodyssey.org//en// and that even includes training for free online on that super important topic ,a training you could do as family together, inspiring your kids and likely some of your audience .. the fact ,that this French company has managed to outfit a trawler ship ,fitted with functional professional trash machinery for recycling ,with an ongoing mission to travel the world ,promoting better trash management, is wonderful and inspiring .the cruiser community ,many are good handyman/handywoman ,could investigate DIY travel size ,movable units for boats ( basic units should be possible in suitcase sizes and less ) and thereby promote better trash management ,including at isolated coastal, island regions ,inspiring locals to clean up beached and own trash ,by showing proof of concept with own DIY travel size units ,movable in dinghies from boat to shore and offering support and links for suitable sizes according to location .

Thank you. Very kind words. We typically use a mix of original and licences music in our episodes. For me to record enough music to make ALL the music original would be an unrealistic undertaking. Each original piece of music required hundreds of hours of practise before once can consider making a studio quality recording so it would be prohibitively time consuming. Bear in mind when an artist releases an album with 12 or 14 tracks it generally takes between 12 to 18 months to record and produce the album. But thank you for the compliments. You make a good point about using only ambient noise also. But do remember we are travelling, living, chatting and having all sorts of conversations when we are sailing so very often the background noise includes conversations we may not want to broadcast to the whole world 😂😂. Making a KZbin episode is a vastly complicated and time consuming thing and something we’re still learning about so thanks for the suggestions, they’re all food for thought.

@@SailingMelody you already carry enough tensions ,no need to think of complete pieces . Mainly use nature sound wind, waves ,water ,birds ….. even artful ´silence ´ and sprinkle the episodes with your feelings ,expressed as jam sessions in the moment , you being a good musician , can relax in that expression through sounds ,caressing your guitar and strings . That lived atmosphere will come through and you will get back into being a musician ,after all that boat work stress. Your kids will be nourished ,yourself as well and your audience will get something special ,authentic from each moment .get into the flow of music again and just share it ,you are good enough to just let it happen ,no need to think extra ,no need to compose extra . Your wife can direct the composition of nature sound music ´a wonderful, evolving skill to tune in and you live your musician side with your beloved guitar ,relaxed jamming . Your combined skills will make your épisodes extra special and likely with healing components .

@@SailingMelody put my reply to yours mistakingly in my reply section .here a ps : A professional recording ,apart from not being possible for many episodes ,would not fit the storyline . You and your family are on a boat and visit places from that boat ,no professional sound studio in sight . what would fit ,is you ,just expressing yourself ,just letting your skills and feelings take over .you are good enough to have that sound great ,without thinking ,without willful composing . The authenticity counts and that’s how your audience can get a better experience themselves ,studio quality not needed and actually not wanted . For video recordings with lots of maybe disturbing noises , blend nature recordings in ,like the wonderful sound of a good hull sailing and so many other sailing and ocean specific noises ,that are far more authentic ,than downloaded music/noise ,not played by you .

Yes, Salcombe is indeed lovely. Pity that the whole place has become multi-millionaire's row by the sea. No-one except the super rich can afford to live there nowadays as the mega yuppiies have taken over. Fowey is fast following it in the same manner. But it's great that you have revived your lovely yacht on a budget. Enjoy the South West while you can.

Good question! We have pad eyes on port and starboard so the traditional way is to attach the clew to the windward side but we were playing around with setups and on this occasion we had the clew on the leeward side mid ships pad eye

Did the mizzen stay actually work? As it’s totally killing the slot from the main. It needs to have the tack really need to be on the centreline of the boat somehow Also looks like you have more surface area in your genoa than that too small cruising chute
