Did bring my ten year old Sony DSC-HX9V out of retirement this holiday season just to see how photos/videos looks like in 2021. Almost as much fun is watching those ten year old reviews on KZbin praising the camera's qualities. 😁 Gives me a real perspective on how things have changed in a decade.

Olympus XZ-1 daily driver here. my one and only camera that I own and use on a daily basis. I took >85000 pictures with it. Only trouble is inflating batteries you don't easily get out of the compartment. I'm still on original LI-50b battery. Glad they still make'em. P.S: Jordan, you can call yourself lucky for not using the XZ-1 for video. Because it simply works.

Process the XZ-1 raw files in DXO PhotoLab 5 or PureRaw and use the DeepPrime noise reduction - it is truly remarkable what image quality it can pull out of older compact camera raw sensors at high ISO, not just removing noise, but also recovering more detail and more colour.

Been dumped a load of old cameras by a relative, so having fun playing with them. The Samsung Galaxy camera has a great UI and modern cameras could learn from it. Also a dedicated video camera HX-WA20 which I'm sure Jordan could of got cheaper than the Go Pro clone. Its so good to take videos on a device designed for it rather than the clunky camera interfaces

I'm still using XZ-1 from time to time. The main disadvantage for me is using ISO above 200. 100/160/200 - no problem, 250 and more - holy cow! Aside from that it is quite capable one even for long exposure night shots.

Poor Jordan. As the video was going I was impressed by the pictures from the Olympus, when everything is being shrunk down to a computer or phone screen all that pixel peeping noise disappears in the 1MP image in the palm of your hand. Something to keep in mind. Also I remember Olympus had some of the best jpeg color science and noise reduction back in those days. They could always punch above their weight because their processing was really well tuned.

I'm still using an X30 alongside my APS-C cameras. With its manual zoom and aperture ring, it makes a very tactile experience, especially when coupled with flash for that wonderful carefree leaf shutter shooting experience. For video, I'm sure some of the older Sony bodies with modern third party lenses could do really well for the money. I picked up an X-H1 used for photo and the occasional video and it does a great job.

I Used a Panasonic DMC-ZS5 10 years ago, always in auto, Video was 720p , The best feature was the 12x optical zoom. That olympus sounds like how I started shooting the fuji X70. Just a bit of fun, a toy, a palate cleanser. And then I started leaving my main camera behind more often. It's probably not 30.3fps, it's a variable frame rate. Most of those cheap GoPro knockoffs are equipped with an older cellphone camera sensor and most of them record at a variable frame rate. It's perfectly possible to convert the footage to a fixed frame rate using ffmpeg (just re-encoding it should do the trick), but it's also necessary to do so if you want sound and video to be in sync.

You guys have a “funny” way of having fun. Personally I’m not all that amused to see someone suffer, or even pretend to suffer. (or perhaps suffer for real and exaggerate for entertainment purposes). But on the positive side there’s absolutely a value in seeing a review of two cameras that we wouldn’t normally consider. How great that value is, I don’t know. By the way Jordan, I do sympathise. There’s little I hate more than sync issues! (Except aspect ratio issues which luckily we didn’t see here).

XZ-1 was a nice camera. Pretty good lens too, and it supported bracketing so you can often improve on DR by leaving bracketing on. Require post processing of course, but really helps. My biggest problem with the XZ-1 was using it in cold where it reset everything when turning it off and on again below freezing. Assumed that was just a problem with my camera though.

Actually, if you avoid the very cheapest, there have been some pretty good GoPro clones at very low prices. I still use an SJ Cam M20, though I re-adjusted the focus. And then again, I have a GitUp Git2 with a replaced lens. I used it stock for a time-lapse which turned out very good, but after I replaced the lens, I found I had flare issues, which I have not gotten around to fixing. The nice thing is that you can leave them outdoors for time lapse (you might want to extent the battery) and the risk of loss due to weather, (or theft) is negligible.

Way back when, I replaced my Kodak Zi8 pocket cam (which was grossly undervalued and undermarketed by Kodak) with a Sony DSC-HX9V (yep, I got it primarily as a compact camcorder). I had to comp for the Sony's lack of a mic jack (which the Kodak had, along with a shockingly robust preamp, even by today's standards) by using a Zoom recorder for concerts. I really wanted a compact all-purpose setup and this worked well for a few years. And the Sony was also pretty good at taking pics.

Have to agree compared to using a smartphone. My eye immediately went to the XZ-1 in the intro. Great little older camera. I love the Canon G9X Mark II for this exact reason. Much much nicer to use than a smartphone, lovely build, nice controls, but substantially better image quality than the XZ-1 and basically every camera phone. As for Jordan, surely you could have given him that Theta S for the same $99. BTW I bought a Sony A3000 for my 3 year old for Christmas that wanted a camera so badly. About $60 USD with kit lens. Good kid friendly camera.

10 years ago I actually had the XZ-1. After reading the DPreview review I bought it, intended as an upgrade from the Fuji F30, but it turned out it wasn't. Manual control was much better, of course, and the lens was, too, but the picture quality wasn't really. I love taking pictures in low light (think streets at night and pub scenes, for example), and in those scenarios it wasn't really better than the F30. 2 years later (after reading the DPReview review) I got me the Ricoh GR, and while it has its limitations, it was much closer to what I wanted. Of course I want a camera that is as compact as the GR, but with interchangeable lenses (including a good pancake zoom!) and even better low-light image quality. As you can guess, I am still searching for the right one.

Sounds about right. Even in 2020, video was difficult for pro and flagship hybrid cameras to integrate well. Photos were easier, and still are decent by today's standards. Video has always lagged. My experience of trying to get a hybrid solution in 2020: Some of the best 'cheap' video options in 2020 were the heavy Canon DSLR 80d, the m50 with unique lenses and no upgrade path to full-frame, a Canon R with an extreme 4k crop, lack-lustre low-light, and poor high frame rate options, funky frame rates and no flip-screen Sony a7iii, or the *Panasonic S1H* with great lenses, high quality 6k and 4k, even usable 4k at 60p, great dynamic range, ground-breaking multi-angle and flip screen, and the best IBIS money could buy, and enough scopes, etc to make me overlook the lack-lustre AF in hopes that the sweet glass will continue to find future bodies to partner with for years to come. I purchased the S1H to document my children's early years, and here's to hoping Panasonic get over themselves long enough to put a decent phase detect AF in an L-mount body, or that Sigma fill the gap instead of creating more of the pointless FP-L type cameras with feature combinations no-one asked for like: no physical shutter combined with almost unusable sensor rolling shutter, and phase detect AF without a decent algorithm to detect, track, and focus on subjects... After realising just how hopeless the lack of decent AF can be (and just how heavy the S1H with 70-200 2.8 is!), I added a Go-Pro 10 to my kit, and mix and match between fast and slow action between the Go-Pro 10 and Panasonic S1H. I'm still thinking either to purchase the Sony zv-1 as a slightly less Go-Pro mini-cam, that doesn't force me to buy another set of lenses like the other contender (the Fuji XT-4) would...

Chris keeps going on about "Point and shoot" - these things like this, the Pan LX3 and the Canon S90 are the forerunners of the Sony RX100 series and lets face it , with that hyper sticky AF system , the Sony A1 is pretty much a big expensive "Point and shoot" with interchangeable lenses, in fact if a MILC can`t "Point and shoot" thesedays and get perfectly tracked images it`ll get a bad review . The description you`re looking for Chris is "Compact camera"
