This week James has been putting the MG5 through its paces as a mobile service vehicle with 1700 miles covered over 9 days. As one of the cheapest, longer range EV's available, it will be interesting to see how it stands up in such tough conditions.

This video would have persuaded me to buy an MG5 if it weren't for one thing - I bought mine at the end of January. I do miss not having an app to set the climate control remotely like I did in the Leaf, but other than that this car is an improvement in every way and I love it. It's just no fuss, no drama all the car that I need.

Hi glad you are pleased with your MG. You say it is better than the Leaf in every way, yet some other commentators have said the Leaf is better built and much quieter. As someone who is contemplating changing current Leaf for the 62Kw one I'm interested in your thoughts. My current Leaf has been 100% reliable and not a squeak or rattle and since I park in a carpark I use the app a lot to preheat and check battery charge state as I'm retired and don't use the car every day.
@littlebluepanda394
@littlebluepanda394 3 жыл бұрын
@@jimf4748 I only had one Leaf and I've only had one MG, so this isn't exactly a massive dataset, but the Leaf had far more little squeaks and rattles; the brakes on the Leaf had a tendency to bind almost from day 1 if the car was left for more than a few days, the dashboard had a few squeaks as I drove, little things that were far from a showstopper, but not present at all in the MG. In terms of reliability my Leaf was also 100% with the only real fault being a failed tyre pressure sensor, but if you use the app a lot then be warned that it is a wrench to not have it. The other day was super hot here and I really would have liked to have set the aircon going on the car before going out. It's not a deal breaker, but I do miss it and there will never be an app for the MG because it has no connectivity to use one. There are some decent deals to be had on the 62kWh Leaf, but if you are spending that kind of money I would definitely advise looking into the Hyundai and Kai offerings, too. If you have any more specific questions then feel free to ask here or on www.reddit.com/r/mg5ev/

@@jimf4748 Jim, I bought my MG5 in December. I've never driven a Leaf but I'm familiar with the Zoe as my wife has a 65 plate 22kw model. The MG5 does not need preheating. Even when the windscreen is frozen, it takes only 2 or 3 minutes to fully defrost and heat the car. 200 miles in all weathers. A great car.

Such a shame none of the "legacy" manufacturers have created an estate/stationwagon BEV before MG took to the task. Taxi drivers have been asking me when will we get a "affordable" load carrying bev now I can tell them. Apart from the custom made model S it's shocking that we have had to wait 11 years for one to become available. All dog homers rejoice! Cheers

Followed your channel since way back as I wanted an idea of how EVs perform in a high mileage environment, not that I am high mileage driver. It’s just that my EV purchase had to be a long term thing and possibly the last car I ever buy. It was my retirement present to self and I went for the Kia e-Niro and am now 2 years and 42,000 km into that. We live in France and have to say the car has been superb so far.

I usually run the tyres on my Taxis at 2.7 or 2.8 bar and have never seen center wear before edge wear! Maybe I just got a poor quality pair? Grip though is bad. Break going over any road ironwork (even light breaking) can cause the ABS to kick i n likewise accelerating on anything but perfect tarmac will cause the stability control program to cut the power down sharply. Great video and glad your experience with the MG5 matches mine. Just as a comment, although the Octopus Go overnight rate is very cheap, the rest of the day at 13.45p/KWh is still cheaper than almost any rapid charger. It sounds like a false economy to use a public charger to avoid going outside the 4 hour window.

I have nothing against the car but it is not an MG other than the letters on the badge . MG were British owned and built sports cars and sports saloons . It’s sad that you have to buy heritage, perhaps Royal Doulton can start manufacturing Ming Dynasty vases or Emperor Qin shi Huang Terracotta Army and then claim the heritage as theirs .

@@wobby1516 Fair comment. Your original post didn’t hint at these costs so I fell into the trap of thinking only of fuel costs of an ICE vehicle which are significant compared with an ev mainly charged at home. It would need a detailed analysis of James’ costs including how he charges for his time while travelling and taking into account what he can offset against tax by working from home in order to assess whether it’s financially worthwhile. And one man doing what he loves to do and working from home will undoubtedly produce different results from someone running a business which employs others and may even have the overhead of dedicated premises.

Thanks for the video. We have the MG ZS EV.. and had a 5 while it was in for a service.. The miles per kW was better in the 5. The big NO for us was the lip for loading...you can't fit a dog crate in the back as you can't open the crate doors unless you build up the floor. With 6 dogs, a dog walking, pet shop, and grooming salon we just could not getting rid of the ZS EV or our LWB Kangoo ZE... I will be selling our Leaf mind you.. it's way too small for our lot ... unless it's a vet run with one of the cats. We are aiming for a Rivian .... Great size for us and it tows too👍 A great alternative to a Land Rover Discovery IMHO 👍 All said and done I think the MG5 is great as an every day load lugger. I'm sure the vast majority of drivers would be very happy with one.. and it's WAY better than any ice alternative (unless you do 700 miles a day without stopping...lol)

Hi James & Kate. I have been swatting up on EVs this last month or so - watching every video on your channel from day one. It's been great to follow your journey on the road (literally) in electric vehicles and as a family. Thank you for sharing so much information and insight. My late Dad and I have had several MGs between us including two MGB GT V8s (one of which was the ex-Thames Valley Police demonstrator - GOF88L), a 2004 MG ZS, my old 2004 MG ZT-T which I decided I really didn't like and got rid fo it years ago, and the last one being a ICE MG3 which I drove for six months whilst Dad was receiving cancer treatment. I am very much supporting the MG community, in Dad's memory, through my work under the Artisan Intermedia banner. I am keen to switch back from my current workhorse Honda CR-V to an MG EV. The MG5 is keeping my attention as I have always loved estate cars and need enough space to throw my mobility scooter in now that I live with Multiple Sclerosis. Thank you again for the insight into the MG5.

@@cjmillsnun correct, there is a reason that brake fluid needs to be replaced every 2 years. It is not difficult or expensive to do, I can never understand why anyone would want to "save money" on something so important but change the gearbox oil. You can't fix stupid..

I bought the MG ZA EV in Feb and really impressed with the quality and performance of the car. I was sceptical at first until i test drive it, the guys at MG let me keep it for 48hours, which really helped to make an informed decision. I think chinese have done justice to revive this British brand.

Its starting to look as though the new MG which ever one you care to look at be it MG-5 2022 model or the new MG ZS and now marvel R are going to cause the established car world real trouble, there looking like the car to have now, the smart money is going there way , products are here and at a standard we can no longer ignore If the likes of Nissan / Ford /Toyota just to name a few don't pull there finger out there going to be left behind,

MG’s Chinese patent have a very interesting 2nd gen EV in the Marvel 5. For some reason, they aren’t selling it here, so I’m looking hard at the Ionic 5. The MG5 is fine as a workaday vehicle but it doesn’t appeal much to me to be honest.

Thanks for a good review! If it do 200 mile (320 km) in rain it’s good but I would like it to do 285 miles to be on safe side in Swedish winter when you can expect up to 30% loss in battery capacity. Charging network is not brilliant where I live and my ageing parents live 100 miles down the road if you wonder why I need all that capacity. I do like the MG5 not being a SUV and hopefully with a reasonable price tag when they will start selling them here in Sweden in October.
