This appears to be an standard-pattern lathe that is exported under several name brands with a different colour coating on it. Good to know it isn't entirely useless.

@awldune
@awldune 6 жыл бұрын
On second glance, I don't think it is a parting tool because it is rectangular in cross section (a parting tool is diamond in cross-section). I guess it is what you would call a beading tool.
@TimNummy
@TimNummy 6 жыл бұрын
I realized that's what it might be when I was doing the editing haha - It looks like there are multiple types of parting tools (rectangular like that one, diamond like you mentioned, etc) In the next video that I make with this wood lathe, I'll be trying it as a parting tool to see how it goes.
@awldune
@awldune 6 жыл бұрын
I looked at the PSI website and they call it a parting tool. In theory a diamond parting tool is supposed to have less friction on the sides but I doubt it makes a huge difference in practice. If you are parting something big, you will usually move the tool to enlarge the kerf anyway.

If you dont mind me adding that when you are cutting. Point the flute of the tool the direction of the cut

Can I just say, good attempt for a first time with a Lathe, but may I just add, that the tools are chisels, not scrapers, so as such the angle for the cut should be lower, not at 90 degrees to the work, the second too that you used was a parting tool, so is used on edge, and is a scraper, the third tool is a sque chisel, I wont even try to explain that one in text, but you tube will give some good teaching, as the use of one is a skill all on its own, the last tool that you used is for bowl turning mainly, but good attempt, of and out of the box they will most probable need sharpening (again you tube for tutorials as that is another are of skill on its own) other than that, enjoy your new toy :)

If your piece stops in the lathe it's probably because it's not prepped properly, I typically cut a X along the centre axis of my piece so that the chuck will fit into it nicely and prevent the resistance of the chisel from stopping the piece while the lathe continues moving

I've used a lot of items that had that style plastic handle. I really like them. I've never had one fail in any way but they are way easier to loosen and tighten than just a nut that needs a wrench.

When the wood stops you have to tighten the tail stock up a bit. I would be concerned about the crack on the base. Check the back side. It might be just a surface defect and doesn't matter much. I would add a variable speed motor to the lathe and you would be all set. The variable speed is great. Have a great time turning. Find a green piece of wood and play with all of the tools to get used to them. As usual, practice practice. Thanks for the video.

Tim, You might want to look at the locking plate under the tailstock, it is very small and barely grips over the small surface area it impacts. I have the same lathe over here in the UK and am still very happy with it after a couple of years use. You might also want to look at carbide tools, saves a lot of sharpening! Have fun with your wood turning, I am still resisting the dark side of metal turning but your videos are not helping. Look forward to more great content in 2018. Seasons greetings from across the pond. Tim H

Good tip! I did notice it was a little bit small when I was looking at what it would take to put the locking handle on the front side. Carbide tools would definitely be nice to have - and I'll probably get them at some point - but I just wanted something to get started. As for the metal lathe... I'm not sorry for making it difficult for you :) Can't wait to welcome you to the dark side. Thanks again for watching!

The "curved" tools are called roughing gouges, and you used them right. The second tool you showed is for v-grooving in the work, and the third is called a parting tool (you used it on it's side to "flatten" the dead tree). Unfortunately, that's not the proper way to use a parting tool, but I must admit I still do that regularly myself. It is hard on the edges. Overall, it looks like a great little lathe! Thanks!

The reason the piece stops is that the spur is a single point instead of 2-3 which is standard on a good lathe. The piece should never be able to be stopped by the tool.
