Appreciate your extensive testing, hard work, and videos. Much appreciated! My family and I take an annual 10 day summer very remote wilderness canoe trip in the BWCA, with multiple .25 - .5 mile portages per day. Low weight, solid ice retention, quality build is essential. Can you do a video of the best all type 20-30qt portable coolers? 40 qt rotomolded will be too heavy for portages. Others may not give us the ice retention for 8 days. One old boating trick? Add 2 folded paper bags to the inside bottom & top of coolers before closing. Ice will last a full extra day.

It would seem to me that larger coolers carrying more ice would have greater mass and less surface area for that mass and thus have an advantage.
@christopherrowley75062 жыл бұрын
That's exactly right. It's actually the same reason that megafauna existed during the ice age. It seems a paradox that in such an austere cold climate that huge animals could exist, but the thermal efficiency won out over lack of resources. While not as large as a mammoth, the muskox native to eastern Greenland is a living example. Better volume to surface area means more insulative.

I have an old orange colored Gott cooler with a white lid, not sure the size of it maybe 40-50qt not big but not small. I had four coolers in my cargo van with ice and frozen food in them in 90+ degrees for weeks and that Gott cooler worked the best of all. I’d have to add ice to the others every day or two but that Gott could go 2 days before I’d have to add ice at all and not nearly as much. Also I freeze bottled water (16.9oz bottles) and just put them upright if possible in coolers or put 2 or 3 in a freezer ziplock bag laying down and they work great! Lasts longer than ice cubes and can use them for drinking and if they have ice still in them about 1/3 to 1/2 way I’ll even pour a soda into the water bottle after drinking the water or put the water in another bottle that’s empty or has cold water in it. When going to the desert and it’s a two to 3 hour drive for more ice or supplies over a bad washboard road it’s more economical to just have one or two coolers 60-70 qt coolers full of frozen bottles of water. Another way to make the ice last longer is cover coolers with heavy cotton blankets draping down all the sides and a light colored tarp over it to reflect sunlight and if possible keep them in shade and wet the blankets down so they are soaked with water if you are near a creek, river or a lake use that water if it’s cold. Helps keep the coolers from getting hot and so everything stays cold way longer. I’ve camped in mountains and deserts in temps over 100 and no way to easily get ice and water bottles are easy to freeze so I hope these tips help people out.

Moving blankets; the quilted ones. Fold one the footprint of your cooler, put the cooler on top of it. Drape the other over the cooler. Unless it's stupid hot even cheap coolers can almost get a third more ice life. Heat loading from the sun, air movement over the shell and convection with the ground will kill ice quickly.

I never use a cooler for storing ice, but to keep food cold. So do a test like people use coolers, add food open and close several times a day and then see what happens to the ice as the cool escapes each time the cooler is opened.
@CoolersOnSale5 жыл бұрын
We have to do it this way so that it's a level playing field. There is no way we could fill this amount of coolers up with food and regularly be in and out of them. We would feed a small army. We explain that in detail here: www.coolersonsale.com/cheap-coolers-best-budget-cooler-based-on-performance/
@MM_4055 жыл бұрын
Not just that you can’t line up food the same either, being that each cooler has different inside dimensions. Meaning what one cooler can hold another can’t so how would that be a fair test? “As people use the coolers”.... really?! 😂😂😂 My 2 sons are in and out of our cooler literally 2-3times an hour for all day that’s why I’ve had to buy them a cooler cuz our food drinks ect... we’re done after day one, as for my father he only breaks into his cooler once a day just to get food for his dinner. So how are you supposed to test equally what people do when even that’s not a equal comparison, using what I stated as experience with my own family? Point made this is the fairest comparison cooler vs cooler not family habits vs cooler.

I don't understand why the cheaper coolers don't have insulated lids. Does it really cost that much for a little foam?

I'm in and out of my cooler all day. I think it would melt much faster under normal usage. Still a very informative video . Thanks

Whar about the bear rating on some of the coolers? Not a test on it but what does that rating mean? Is your food safe for the rating? Does the rating mean you can use the cooler as a bear box in areas requiring them?
@CoolersOnSale5 жыл бұрын
That means they are Bear Resistant according to IGBC. However, keep in mind, this means using a lock on the cooler (usually in the corner) We have a full article of that here: www.coolersonsale.com/best-cooler-for-camping/

If you ask me, Anything that holds ice for more than 5 days is a winner. Because based on capacity, you'll run out of beer, I mean, food within 5 days.

I have that Lifetime Cooler. I paid $97 for it at Wal-Mart. Epic cooler. Although it's not water tight from factory, I used a sticky weather stripping (about 3/4 of an inch thick) around the inside of the lid. It cost $6 for that and now it's water tight.

Is that the 55qt?
@herefishyfishy69075 жыл бұрын
@@CoolersOnSale Yes, it's the 55. It has an o-ring gasket around the opening (on the base) but the lid doesn't make contact with it. I put the weather stripping on the lid where it makes contact with the bottom when closing.

When did you purchase the cooler?
@herefishyfishy69075 жыл бұрын
@@CoolersOnSale about a two years ago. It stays in the back of my truck, under a truck canopy. I use it constantly. I keep it filled with ice and cold drinks at all times. I do a lot of hiking, mountain biking and working outdoors. I like to have cold drinks at my disposal. I put ice in it about once a week.

Awesome to hear. Thanks for sharing. They have since update the lid/gasket, so it should be leakproof now.

are you an Igloo dealer? there are other coolers out there like Ozark
@CoolersOnSale5 жыл бұрын
Definitely not, but they are rather common and the biggest cooler manufacturer in the world and available at multiple outlets like Wal Mart, Sams, Costco, etc.

Great video! Unfortunately, I have an Igloo Maxcold 90 and it's the worst cooler I've ever owned. It went through 50lb of ice in four days.

Don't waste your money on a yetti. For the money they ask for them, they should hold ice for 6 months, not 6 days. Why pay 3-4 hundred dollars to keep $1.50 bag of ice. Theses coolers here in demonstration are the way to go
