as for the fabric paint: you don't have to do as many layers if you put down a layer of black acrylic first. i learned this from mandible bone over here on youtube, and it actually really works because it keeps your paint from soaking into the fabric as much! it can make your paint chip a bit, but if that's not a problem then i would give this a try :]
@RattusRattus2 жыл бұрын
Omg I would have never thought of that! Mandible Bone is an awesome creator !!! Thanks for passing on the tip I’ll have to give it a shot :D

tbh having to layer white on black fabric paint is something ive found you need to do regardless of what paint you use, but the paint ive found that works the best is using liquitex white acrylic paint, with or without fabric medium mixed in. it goes down pretty opaque, and dries much more flexible than other acrylic paint ive used. i love how the bustier turned out especially!

This was so much fun to watch, I love it. You can use fabric softener to mix with regular acrylic paint and it works really nice for fabric. I highly recommend. And I know what you mean about fabric scissors, they are so worth it. Mine are very special to me for a kind of silly reason; I went to a fabric store by myself for the first time and I wanted to buy scissors and I had no idea which ones I should get when the sweetest little old lady came up to me and told me all about the different qualities and then gave me a coupon because I think she knew I wasn't going to be able to splurge on the nicer ones. And then she just disappeared! I didn't see her again in the store. My husband also likes to make jokes about handing them to me when I need paper scissors, it's truly a joke. He gets legit "someone used fabric scissors on paper? oh well, so tragic they died" :P he's a goof ball like that.

Omg I needed this! I've been looking for inspiration for some clothing diys, I've stopped buying fast fashion so its been hard finding tops n stuff edit: something you can do if you want a corset detail but u don't have any grommets is use saftey pins! You line them up and thread ribbon or whatever string you want to and it gives that corset effect!

I feel ya on the white-on-black stenciling. What I typically do is put down a layer of watered down fabric medium (someone else mentioned black fabric paint, that should work too) to provide a better surface and keep the texture of the shirt from coming through, it's a pretty common trick with airbrushing. I usually mix my own paints using fabric medium and acrylic ink, that'll get you much higher pigmentation than cheap fabric paints, and a bottle of ink should last you a long time, especially if you don't do it super often. You could also totally just mix the ink straight into the paint you have, no need for buying seperate fabric medium. Thinning out the paints can help the lower layers bind into the fabric better, and reduces splotchiness with cheaper paints. You can get special thinners (liquitex flow aid is great stuff) that don't dilute too much, though water will also work. Just add a drop or two at a time until you find a good ratio. You can even thin with inks and get a bit better flow and better colour ;-) though a bit of flow aid/water will still likely help. It mostly comes down to practice and knowing your supplies, but those pointers are things that have helped me get thin non-plasticky layers of white that can also be used as a base for doing other colours on black background. Good luck and keep experimenting!

you did great. press cloths are just clothes that you press through. usually quite thin fabric. they prevent any sticky stuff from the interfacing transferring onto the iron and making it gross. and you can buy fabric medium which you mix into acrylic paint to help the acrylic to not crack onyou. that might work better. or perhaps you could just mix your awful fabric paint with acrylic to use it in the future.
