I love that the trift stores I go to have no man or woman sections. They are just sorted by jackets, shirts, pants, etc. When you shop online you can also just write "black lather jacket" in the serch section insted of "black lather jacket woman".

I shop the same way online--never gender specific. I've found stuff for men that I liked better than the women's version. I'm built straight up and down (not curvy), so some men's pants fit me better. And I'm almost 6 feet tall. (Jan Griffiths).

If your area has the "old lady" thrift stores (like me), asking family or friends for their hand me downs has definitely helped over the years. Everyone in the house always asks me if I want something before they throw it out. Also if you have things in your own closet that you no longer want, see what can be reused. For example I threw away some old boots from high school but ripped off the straps and buckles for future diys.

If thrift store politics is something you take into consideration when choosing stores to shop at, to add to Salvation Army being ehhh, goodwill is a no go too. They're really bad to their employees and treat disabled employees particularly unfairly. I used to work at one and I didn't realize how bad it was till I had to deal with the company itself on a daily basis. Local one off thrift stores are usually the way to go. However accessibility is important too so all you have near you is a goodwill or salvation army, thats totally okay too and you gotta do what you gotta do❤

I would never encourage theft, b/c that's illegal, but if things happened to go missing from Goodwill or Salvation Army without being payed for... Oh well. I wouldn't be upset about it.

Yard and estate sales can also be a way to thrift. My community has a community-wide sale 3 times a year which I go to, as well as the thrift stores. I know the crappy way Goodwill and the SA treat their employees, so I don't go there too often. I've found better stuff in privately owned thrift stores, and also from friends who want to get rid of stuff. (Jan Griffiths).

Next time you're at a thrift store, look for a propane burner or hot plate so you can do your synthetic fabric dying outside. 😀 I really like your tips. I do textile art so I will just go to the clothing section and look for colors, textures, patterns that catch my eye. It doesn't matter what section it comes from or what type of clothing it is, I'm just looking for unusual fabrics to add to my stash. Thrift stores are the best.

If you have a fire pit, you can make a stand for a kettle for dyeing clothes too. That's what I did, and it works like a charm. I also have an old wringer washer (came with the house) that I use outside for dyeing clothes as well. Keeps my regular machine clean of the dye. And I dry my dyed items outside---my clothesline is in shade all the time. (Jan Griffiths).@@jrj5893

On checking various sections: I once found a totoro hat in the kids section. I am child free and nowhere near a child's size, in fact kids kind of ick me out, but I was so glad I checked that day. I love love love thrifting and I am also the kind of person who will get lost in a thrift store and spend hours searching through everything! (Sounds like we would be good thrifting pals!) I have found some unbelievable things at thrift stores over the years. My favourite sections are skirts, trench coats (but also jackets in general), the candle/candle holder section, picture frames (I love ornate pewter or brass frames or wooden ones that I can sculpt over!), and the jewelry/belts/scarves. I have become somewhat of a collector of clothes! One of my best finds was a Lip Service top (pinstripe, cap sleeve, with a bunch of buckles and a real lock at the throat) for $7.99! Bless the goth angel in my small city who donated it 🙏

That was a treat from start to finish - thank you so much. My local charity shop is pretty good, and a bit odd too. Last time I went in they had a large plush dachshund, completely covered in multi-coloured sequins. I live in a smallish town, so the advantage is that thrift stores are still cheap here. I thrift nearly all my clothes and my trick is just to pop in every week or two to see what's there. Checking regularly has led me to some excellent finds. Also, shop when it's raining. Fewer people will be out, which is nice by itself, but of course you also have better chances of finding good stuff. I also just use this as a cheap source of entertainment cuz man you just never know what's going to show up. I overheard a volunteer this week saying every time she came in she found something she couldn't identify 😆. And one of my favorite DIYs is just replacing the straps on a tank with some grommet tape ordered online. And for tying off your thread, if you then run the thread through some stitched or the middle of a seam, you can hide the tail while also securing it from unknotting in the wash.

A few small additions as I was listening: Iron on fabric tape is your friend but learning some quick sewing/mending skills are easy and save you from having to throw something away. Yes to the cutting up a shirt (that doesn't fit) for the design and transferring. Yes to if an item is now yours, it is YOUR gender item now. If you enjoy crafting, very low cost items can often be more affordable than buying those supplies new such as trim, zips, buttons etc. Yes to old school uniforms but try to grab ones that aren't in your immediate area because some parents can only afford secondhand uniforms for their kids. This one can be tricky. With lace-y items, do try it on or put your bare arm inside the sleeve first to check for itch, it might be unbearable to actually wear and end up being a waste of your money. If you have mobility issues and want to craft, call up a friend to help you, make it into a fun evening for both/all of you! I love crafting with friends and they might think of something you didn't or vice versa to make a super cool, fun item! For homewares, would a spritz of black spray paint make it perfect? Do it! It'll be great, especially picture frames!

i've found literally everything i've bought second hand (like home decor, furniture, clothes n accessories) and it brings me so much joy! sadly all the thrift stores are full of shein these days so i no longer find clothes in person which makes finding clothes a little harder since i'm pretty small (most clothes fit weird/dont fit at all + i dont have a sewing machine so i cant really tailor them at home). online thrifting is fun too, most of my clothes are from those! here online thrifts are super hard to navigate, we literally just have three sections - women, men, kids. you can't actually search up words which is super dumb.. i still love thrifting and i've found many cool pieces, really old stuff from dead threads, lip service and queen of darkness :) just last week i found a cool long pvc jacket online but it was sold by the time i sent the message >:( been looking for one for soooo long!

you are so right the men's section can be a very rewarding place to find some cool stuff! I went thrifting on Friday and I shopped only the men's section first this time as I really wanted some black baggy-ish men's style pants and I found 3 really cool silk ties to use as belts and as ties and a huge really nice flannel and best of all I found a black pin stripped 2 piece suit in a teen lad's size that fits me all slouchy (but not too big so the pants stay up) the way I wanted. I did a quick walk through the woman's section but it was packed full of women shopping so it was hard to get good rummage going and after finding such treasures in the men's section I was okay with not trying to shop whilst it was so crowded in the woman's!

Not thrift shop specific but in case anyone wandering by hasn't considered it yet: Just after Christmas, when things go on sale Tree skirts. If you can fit in kids clothing, it's worth a try to see of you can wrap one of those around you. I found one that's a white faux fur with paw prints shaved into the fur. It ties and fits me as a long stiff capelette and a skirt too. You could probably modify these to fit a bit better too but in this case it fit me as is. Circle skirts are easy enough to make but if you spot a tree skirt with a pattern you're drawn to, try it out. Then you and your tree can share.

You're super creative, and your style is really inspiring (despite how different my style is compared to you). And I think diy and thrifting is great for EVERYONE, regardless of fashion sense. You've actually inspired me to take up sewing! Uhhh idk how to end this ramble. I think your content is just. Cool. 😎👍

10:30 While this may work for some people, there's an alternative way to find out if a pair of pants fit. Take the pants and lay the waistband over where your bellybutton is. If the ends of the waistband touch each other or overlap near your spine, then it might fit! Again, this wont work for everyone, but if the neck trick hasn't worked for you then they this one.

hey its me again, i genuinely havent DIYed in years and i didnt realize how much i missed being able to make my wardrobe exactly what i want. im curently on shirt 2 and and leggings 1 and im having such a great time. i missed this, thanks for the reminding me of this passion and the DIY element of this subculture (and for sparing my wallet of the foxglove/restyle/killstar ect prices...ouch) anyway so yeah... im blaming you Rabbit for my new shirt and hoodie and the pinpricked fingers /lh

i have also only watched three videos, do you have any reccomendations/videos youve done on fabric paint patch making? thats an area i have less than no expirience in and fabric waste/ time waste because i did a step wrong is terrifying to me personally

I really prefer my thrifted clothes, although I did find a killstar black sweatshirt at a thrift store years ago, like 10 years ago, that says I'm A Cat in white on it but otherwise I cant and wont afford those brands new when I can get so much more for my money thrifting! also this video was fun I really enjoyed it so much!

37:12 not you accidentally owning designer for years. But yes the material in womens clothes sucks so I also go for "grampy" sections for more insulated fabric so it pairs well with cute but flimsy feminine pieces

I grew up with, if you have an open closet or bookcase that's a mess, hang a velvet cloth for your closet if people are comming over and you didn't have time to fix it (my dad puts the most random stuff in bookcases, like scotch tape, or his keys or random stuff he found while vacuming. For the scotch tape a the bookcase even has become the first place we look if we need it.)

doubt anybody is gonna find this comment 8 months after the video was posted (😭) but another tip for pants instead of the neck trick is to put your arm in the waistband and ive heard that works too! also more sanitary id think instead of putting it on your neck

I don't bother with consignment shops much BUT I did get a nice pair of express jeans from Platos closet and I did punk them up easy and they lasted a long time and were very comfy for like $10 so worth it for base pieces like that sometimes

This is a really great video! One thing I do want to mention for anyone reading about the bandana comment at 1:20:20 is uh... at least some of the people doing this are flagging, and this may not be what you're looking to do (and absolutely shouldn't be if you're underage)

another tip for seeing if pants will fit you - if you put one edge of the waistband by your belly button and wrap it around your side, if the other edge reaches where your spine is they should fit (hope i explained that in a way that makes sense)
