what size screws ? what did you use for the deck wood onto the frame ? 1x6 ? what kind of wood ? douglas fir ?
@TheNeighborDominator3 жыл бұрын
@@neilmcmanus3727 I used all 2x6x14. I honestly don't know what tree type of wood but it wasn't treated because I wanted to be able to use it as firewood next year when the real deck is built. I used 3 1/4 inch deck screws I believe. I will check and get back with you within the hour.

Only 4 things I will point out that should have been different: 1- Treated wood. In general, unless you live in a very sunny/windy place or your deck is completely under cover, you want your frame made of treated wood. It will extend its life an absurd amount of years. 2- No wood to ground contact. Even if the wood is treated (but specially if it is not). Avoid this because it will be a matter of a few years before it starts to rot. You want to place some rubber/plastic material in between. 3- No wood to concrete contact. Same as above, although you might see it a lot, even with treated wood, you want to avoid it. Wood should either fly over concrete (with steel) or rest on a pad. 4- Cover the ground. You can simply lay some plastic (dark to stop light). You don´t want any weed to grow through your deck. But this completely depends on the ground and location. But generally a weed will easily always find its way up. Those are my profesional tips only aimed at extending the life of your deck :D When you place wood outside, always aim at overprotecting it if you want it to last very long. It might cost a bit more, but you might gain years on it. Otherwise, you guys did an amazing job there. Looks neat. May I suggest, add an extra board at the end, to cover the end of your flooring pieces :) But that is just my opinion.
@andrewfreeman882 жыл бұрын
Agree with these point but as a quick hack you could paint the ends of the support lumber that contact the ground or use more treatment on the cut ends.
@MikeJones-gj4me Жыл бұрын
Paint anything touching ground or concrete with Henry’s tar if it’s a quick job for yourself or a friend, if u cover everything that could possibly rot you should be good to go for a long time even if just sitting on flat bricks

I’m confused on the no wood to concrete rule
@Aphorism89 Жыл бұрын
@@joshuaconstable6323 hi Joshua. Concrete stays moist and if wood is in direct contact, it will absorb that moisture and eventually start rooting. You can place asphaltic paper in between and then the wood will be protected

Looks great! Personally I would add bracing blocks in the middle for this span of deck and cover the tops of the joists. It wouldn't add much to the cost especially if you use old school strips of roofing paper instead of expensive joist tape. Being close to the ground a small gap between the boards might add to it's longevity as well.

According to Google - Should deck boards be bark side up or bark side down? A board that is correctly installed right side up (or bark side down) will form a crown and allow water to run off the edges. If the board is installed wrong side up (or bark side up) it will curve up on the edges when dry and water can gather and sit in the cup. That is a recipe for wood rot and problems.

How are the deck blocks holding over time?
@TheNeighborDominator Жыл бұрын
The deck is still strong. I just put Thompsons water seal every spring and it's solid. 2 seasons strong no problems. I am going to be doing some upgrades this spring

I have a saying where I live, 'perfection doesn't live here.' I like the way you claim not to be a professional but hey, it looks great. Who would know. I think the cost of labor where I live far exceeds the cost of wood. If its raised off ground can you use untreated lumber?
@TheNeighborDominator2 жыл бұрын
Aayy thanks! I used untreated wood because this deck is only temporary. If it were long term I would for sure used treated. I did seal it after! Thanks for the kind words!
@TheRobblue Жыл бұрын
Looks good, I'd have made the step the same width as the door...much safer and the same at the front of the deck.
@TheNeighborDominator Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I was going to make the step the same size but we don't use the other door and put the BBQ there. If it was a full step my BBQ would not fit. It does look a little silly but it had to be done
@2_IMPERIO_72 жыл бұрын
What would be the cost of this??
@TheNeighborDominator2 жыл бұрын
It costed me around 700 at the time. I was quoted $5,000 from a contractor!

Great video but I have a question. If I level my ground and use pressure treated lumber can I go without using deck blocks? Just have it laying on the ground
@TheNeighborDominator2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I'm not sure. Moisture will get trapped under for sure and I don't know how long the wood would last even though it is treated
@MikeHaddadLawnAddictions3 жыл бұрын
Clint. Looks good. How temporary is this?
@TheNeighborDominator3 жыл бұрын
Just for this summer. I'm hoping the price comes down for materials because the deck that the boss wants is 3 times the size of this little guy!
@MikeHaddadLawnAddictions3 жыл бұрын
@@TheNeighborDominator ah ok. Maybe put some stain on it. Looks like it’s not pressure treated

is the frame 2x4 or 2x6?

They are all the same pieces of wood because I did not own a saw. I wanted a no cut deck

It's unbelievable right! I watched subs old videos and this exact deck was under $500 wood and screws. And now I walk out the door costing a little over 850! Better than the 5k I was quoted to have a deck guy build it!

I’m literally in the process of building a 10 x 14 floating deck.. how many deck blocks did you end up using?
@TheNeighborDominator3 жыл бұрын
10 and then I used small cut pieces of wood as supports all over. Used the deck blocks for corners and center where main weight is
@nomsolo99353 жыл бұрын
How will you shim it when the support blocks sink unevenly into the dirt?
@TheNeighborDominator3 жыл бұрын
This is just a temporary deck to get me by till next season. The ground was really hard and gravel was mixed all in. I think it should be solid for a season
@DarrellTurnerJr8 ай бұрын
So I've seen a ton of these videos and I'm a beginner DIYer but why is no one using nails? Wouldn't nails be better for the shear forces pushing down on the frame?
@TheNeighborDominator8 ай бұрын
I believe the threading of the screws keeps the boards in place over time. More secure
