Here's how to build an affordable deck! Wood prices are high so building this way is cost effective so you can actually enjoy your backyard instead of just sitting in the dirt! For links to purchase the products in this video CLICK SHOW MORE ⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇
To clarify both my sons Matt and Nate are helping me build this deck, and of course Max is filming. It took us 3 hours to whip this together! I am sure anyone can do it in one day even if working alone. And you hardly need any tools at all. Cheers!

For anyone looking for a materials list, he used 3 2x8x10' (he laminated the third piece on the right side to fit the last deck board) and 9 2x8x12' for the joists. He used ~ 27 5/4 x 6 x 10' for the deck boards. You can probably buy an extra piece or two of the 2x8 for the leveling, if you don't have any scrap wood to use.

Hi Jeff, thanks to you I’m not sitting on the dirt anymore!! I made mine with 2x6s. Cheaper than 2x8. I just want off the dirt. I made mine 12’ x 16’. With 2x 6 x12’ deck boards. Rock solid!! The Depot delivered the wood. 2 son in laws and dad. Started at 10am and done before 5. Tomorrow 10 x 13 gazebo tent going up with a Black Friday 60” tv and propane fire pit. Yeeeehaaa!!!

Thanks for your great knowledge, i am a blaxk guy who loves to do DIY, as i believe a man should put his own hands on his home, as it helps you to know it inside out. People are always surprised to see me doing so many things, i often watch videos like yours to give me the help and the confidence. It is good to see your boys helping you. My dad didn't guide me with anything. I just learned in life with trial and error. I love updating my home, so when i die my daughter can say daddy did this for me... Anyway great video.

My mind is blown by all the common sense in this video. Sometimes complicated doesn't mean necessary. I lost my dad about 6 months ago. He taught me how to do everything growing up and I'm so lucky to be a "handy" girl. I want to build a simple, ground level deck this spring, so of course I came to KZbin. I cannot even explain how happy I am to have found your channel. It's literally like having my dad talk me through a project.

This is so refreshing thank you! I'm just wanting to build a super simple wall tent platform. I've never built anything like this but am pretty handy. All the other videos I've seen are for floating decks using concrete and joists and so much extra hardware. I am definitely going to do it like this instead, except I'll use plywood sheets for the top. Thanks for keeping things simple and straight forward. No bs:)

Hi, I'm so happy to finally find someone that isn't permanently fixing it to the ground (I really believe decking installers don't want you to know that you don't have to permanently install it). I've been watching videos on modular/portable/non permanent decking. So far I like good times decking system but I figured why spend all that money on a decking system when I can just buy the wood and put the frame together myself and buy the adjustable leveling feet that will sit on concrete pavers since I'm working with all dirt. I like your approach so much better. I can skip buying the adjustable leveling feet and just use the wood on the pavers instead. I don't know the proper term but did you make your deck flat or did you angle it a little so that rain water will go away from the building? Thanks for the video!

Built this Easter Sunday 2021 10-2’x8’x12’ 9 for joists and 1 to chop up for the level blocks 2-2’x8’x10’ for sides (didn’t need an extra piece like the video) 30-5/4”x6”x10’ deck boards of which I needed 26 (4 spares) 1lb of #9 3” deck screws for joists 6lb of #9 2-1/2” deck screws for deck boards. 4 star bits for the impact drill (only used one never stripped) Used cedar tone pressure treated lumber for exterior and regular PT for the unseen joists and cedar tone deck screws. Cost about $890 at Menards before the wife sent off the 11% rebate so it’ll be about $800 flat to do this as of April 2021. Materials were bought in South Bend, Indiana. Go Irish🍀 Hope this helps. It’s so awesome and I did it 99% by myself in a day with only an impact driver a drill and a hand saw to cut the one 2x8 into pieces for leveling.

Great video. Easy to follow. I have some grassy dirt that I wanted a short deck on top of and this video did the trick. I laid down double week block material (I could find the thicker stuff). My deck is flush against the cabin so I could not screw or nail in from the outside. I saw another floating deck video that used hangers so I used those on the joists adjacent the wall. This is smaller deck (4.5 feet x 9 feet) and cost about $275 and about 7 hours working by myself. It looks terrific!

Thank you and your boys so much for this vid. After watching it many times I was able to make a really great 10x10 deck against my house in my back yard. I wish you could add pics to these comments, but I think you would be proud! The tip about putting the drill in reverse on the ends really worked like a charm! All the best!

Watching this video a few times gave me all I needed to know about building this deck. I did a 12'x12' to accommodate the gazebo. It came out perfect with only a few unforeseen delays (Star drill bit wore out, cordless drill battery needed changing every 20 mins and I thought 5lbs of screws would be enough but I needed to buy another 5lbs just like you said). Thank you for this video.

Thanks for the videos, very interesting. I'm building my deck (10 X12) over an existing cement deck (5X12). Thinking of cutting a few inches off my 2X6 (10 foot) joists for 5 foot length that will sit on the cement. Should I put something between the cement and 2X6. The cement deck as a good slope that runs the water away from the house. Thanks Luke

***BEST.DECKING.VIDEO.EVER.*** I've spent hours watching how to deck videos. This one is by far the best and most helpful video for DIYers. Thank you SO MUCH!!! Love how simple you make it. Love that it's a family affair for you guys. Love the giggle at 9:23.😂 That cracks me up. I've watched this video SEVERAL times now to make sure I retain all the info. Now...I'm off to buy my lumber. Going to make my deck JUST like this. I'm going to make my children help me (insert a 9:23 type giggle here) and going to make it "straight and pretty". So so so so helpful! Can not thank you enough.

I'm so grateful for this video. We have an area down the back of our garden next to our garage which has always been a problem area for weeds and brambles. Every year I spend days clearing it but it's actually only a couple of inches of top soil and a shed load of broken glass. So I've never been able to dig the roots out of the stuff that grows down there and I'm so limited to what I can do in that area. I can't use harsh chemicals to kill the weeds because of pets. It's quite a large area too so it's a shame. It just always looks a mess. I did think about putting a patio down there but leveling it off for that will be a lot of work and quite costly. I think after watching this, decking is the way to go. It will still need a fair bit of work to level it but not as bad as if I were to put slabs down. Decking is going to be a lot easier and quicker too. I've built all my own garden furniture but I've never built anything constructive before. I always thought decking was a lot more complex until I watched this video. I just now the transformation is going to be amazing!

Great video, thanks Jeff! 3 questions: If the ground is wet due to poor drainage, will just boards to lift it up be ok (should they be on anything, like concrete patio squares)? Should I pre-treat the ground to kill grass or put down fabric? Lastly, if woodchuck or whatever get under there, could they make just the wood brackets touching the ground unstable?
