Do you recall how much sealant you added? Did you need to apply any to the outside surface of the bead?
@Pies. Жыл бұрын
maybe add 1.25x the reccomendation as it will absorb sealant but i do think maybe adding it with the tyre not entirely on the rim might be bettter here, so less is abosrbed through putting it in

Would of liked to of seen you put the tyre over the foam as I imagine it’s not that easy. Great video overall tho, will hopefully get round to trying this.
@chris4536 Жыл бұрын
It's important to 'drop the bead' of the tire into the shallow well of the rim to create enough slack to get the rest of the lip over the rim. Check out this video at the 6:38 mark. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZTWmpyond6Afq8 Cheers

What is the role of foam at the end called? It's hard to hear.
@RidesWithJake2 жыл бұрын
It's pipe insulation foam, you can search it on your local hardware store, if it comes longer than a meter, it's much better since you won't have to join to pieces together. :)
@pretor7062 жыл бұрын
Do you think this would work for a Lectric XP far tire?
@RidesWithJake2 жыл бұрын
I believe this trick will work on a fat tire, however I'm not sure if the insulation foam comes with a "thick enough" diameter, the idea is for the foam to "get pinched" between the sidewall and rim bead, so it has to sit in the middle, maybe try to make something similar of a "Huck Norris" which is a flat foam.
@JasonJJasonJ Жыл бұрын
Under pressure, this foam/rubber material just compresses to the thickness of paper so is useless after a couple rides. Sorry, I tried this and it's a waste of time.

You never told us what "the quality of the ride" becomes once you do this. Is it smoother?, is it more supple? is it quieter? does it grip better ? all little changes however small are important, you should not ignore those but report them to us.
@RidesWithJake2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have tried a similar setup on my hard tail, and in my experience. I don't notice MUCH difference in normal riding pressures (25PSI and up), the huge difference is that you can run at around 18PSI and at that point it is a LOT more supple. I would say 21-23PSI is the sweet spot of having a better ride and enough pressure to make sure you don't destroy your wheel on a bad landing.

There is still a 1 inch gap where the stem valve is.?. It would leaver that part exposed if you accidentally hit a curb or a rugged edge pavement( many of them in streets). It would bug me knowing that chance but if you lucky , I guess it works for you. Im just a bit skeptical due to that gap there knowing a hollow point of tire. Have you run into this?

My favorite tire guard was trimming the sides off smooth worn road bike tire and sticking it inside the new tire. No seams. With the ATB bikes the rough tread even when worn was a bit much so I used that slipperly plastic stuff, which makes the tires slide around a bit and there is that cursed seam. Best to sand down both sides and glue to reduce seam bump. I don't know about foam.

I had to open my wheels for the first time in 2years since this video because my rim tape needs replacing. The foam appears to be intact and was perfectly sealed by the fluid sealant. Some of the cuts on the foam thats was caused by rim edge (that could otherwise damage the rims) has also healed and sealed by the sealant. I will try to post that video here.

How does soft foam stop a puncture, ideal barrier would be something made of Kevlar.
@TheTothtamas Жыл бұрын
Its for tubless tyres. When you hit a rock or curb and it dings the rim. it cushoning it so the tyre sidewall not split. For thorns and other types of puncture there is a special liquid in the tyre (sealent) that plugs up smaller holes.

Way to go thanks for sharing this hack! Would you say these insulation foams work better than pool noodles? How's the damping on bumps feel? I use a hardtail aggressive MTB and has recently switched to tubeless and it's night and day difference for vibration damping but also thinking about inserts for protection and more damping. Cheers!
@dxbiking53223 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely better than pool noodles. I haven't tried but i dont think pool noodle will fit into your tyres. Also if you need a bigger size foam they come in different sizes. Definitely saved my rims heaps of times but didn't help with dampening as i didnt install it for that purpose. But i get what you mean about dampening. Maybe a thicker foam which will fill the tyre airspace inside will do the job for dampening. Goodluck bud!
