It would be a good idea to put boards over the entire pool,it will block the light and prevent the growth of algae in the reservoir. You should also consider putting the reservoir in the ground, it will keep it cool so the roots don't rot and help block any light from coming in through the sides.

You can place some shade cloth or weed mat under the two supports to keep the mozzies from breeding in the nutrient, or else replace the two supports with a solid sheet of waterproof (marine) ply. This will also reduce evaporation from the bottom tank. Keep up the fun & easy hydro suggestions.

That is a really solid design. I am make my trays out of wood and they look cool. I like my flood trays made from cedar and putting 8" netting pots in it. Hydro is the way to go, aquaponics is not very productive if you ask me. Not only that, you can grow heavy feeding plants in hydro. Each year my outdoor hydroponics setup gets better and better. Not they look cool also. I have a lot of wood working and finish carpenter experience. This is how I can make my setup look attractive and high performing.

You can pee in a bottle and let the enzymes work to convert it to ammonia. Then cycle the system for bacteria to convert from ammonia to nitrogen. I have a system using this method and supplement with iron, potash (k), calcium and magnesium. Works amazingly. Unless you have a specific interest in this method hydro is cheapest and easiest though.

Lil heads up. I had 4 running as deep water with foam rafts and after 3 years in the Aussie sun they started to crack and 1 day a small knock and the entire side crumbled dumping everything. The blue shell 1's break even faster. Lucky I was there at the time or it would have pumped all the water from the fish. Would never trust 1 on a Aquaponics system again as well as would replace them yearly with in hydro grows. They are great until they fail and give you a bunch of extra work :(

Funny you should ask, I am in the middle of building a seepage for our grease trap... For small applications I believe composting toilets are the way to go simplicity wise. Hey mate, what do you do for reusing your media? I'm worried about getting rot from bits of old root left stuck to the balls and using the hose to wash takes forever so seems rather wasteful
@Hoocho
@Hoocho 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t worry about any disease or excessive washing of media unless moving from outside to inside. If the plants are healthy and the system is designed properly their ‘immune systems’ will deal with most anything you throw at them. Number 1 tip is to make sure the roots have enough oxygen. No oxygen= unhealthy roots.

Hydroponics is aquaponic's sick little sister, can be healthy when taking care of, but because you don't have to keep the fish alive, a lot of chemicals can be used in the water, like pest pesticides, and plant growth hormones ! Flood and drain is an improvement on this, because you have the usual beneficial bacteria growing with it *if you keep a clean (avoiding harsh chemicals) !*

Why not make a flood and drain with two pumps in side by side media tanks? Each would pump into the other every 15 minutes and the nutrients would not be exposed to sun. No need to drill into tanks, no sand pipes, no nutrient tank, supports or no bell syphon. The pumps can have vente air in the tubing.
