BRILLIANT You basically reinvented the wheel!! This is a game changer no longer will you have to buy two separate fittings or drill or cut two holes which you ALL know gives you twice the chance of damaging or F’ing up an expensive tub,table,tray or tote this is amazing my friend seriously this is coming from a guy way back when while drilling a very expensive botanicare 4x8 flood table the white ones y’all know what I talking about. The first hole made without incident. While drilling the second hole 1-2 inches beside it the section of plastic between the holes shattered out for no apparent reason leaving me with a VERY expensive piece of plastic back then with shipping I don’t even want to admit how much I payed for it with the next day air option but had I only had to make ONE hole CRISIS AVERTED LOL

My understanding from watching other 'flood and drain' systems is that they have bell siphons on them to allow 'drain' state. There might be some nomenclature clarification that needs to happen so that this makes more sense to those looking for full drain. But that brings me to the idea of having a bell siphon version of this too, that way you can accommodate everyone's goal

I do like the bell siphon concept a little better, rather than draining back through the pump. Hoocho's design could be modified to get a full drain by adding a bell with low holes, but it may be difficult to get the drain to go lower than the water inlet. Nice table for starting plants before moving them to an NFT.

I also like the bell siphon idea. I run a few flood and drain tables ran off cheap solar powered pumps that are directly connected to solar panels, so without modification, there aren't on/off cycles.

@@livesimply_ I have ran both systems and I find the bell siphon methed gave me issues with root rot because there was too much water on the roots and did not leave enough time for them to dry out. Im sure with trial and error on pipe size and pump valves could help this. I found it much easier to control with a Eben flow system. For me to change the system was easy as drilling a 2nd hole for the supply and adding a timer. I went from doing a cycle every 30ish min to every 8 hours, This year I may try every 12 hours.

Good job on the drain valve. Nice table. Use the highest flood tube, fill table with bottle beer and wine & Ice. Add 1 block of ice & a few bags of ice in the bottom resivour. Set flood level to full . Leaving the bottle necks just above the ice water line. Smoke a joint while waiting for maximum chill. Enjoy

Give banjo fittings a Google. Used mainly in hydraulics (like a turbocharger oil feed) but a larger sized 3d printed version that fits on the underside between the table and locking nut will give you the ability to optionally add a take off for the drain water. Also gives a nice flat surface for adding a seal on the top and bottom. Downside is that you need to extend the threaded section a bit.

the key to a viable Flood and drain system is slow moving water. Roots will quickly plug a fast drain. I lean toward an exterior drain so it can be cleaned regularly.

For anyone who thinks this single point drain system can only be done with the reservoir straight under the table, this is not true, i managed to secure 50mm PVC pipe over the 13mm garden hose with 13mm 90 degrees adapters and run the hose inside the PVC pipe and got it to drain anywhere you like.

My local hackspace designed something similar, this one is so much more polished.. Shame I finished my flood table 2 weeks ago! =) By the way, I've designed the fittings myself and I recommend a 3/4 inch screw and a store bought quick connect.

Question - if I wanted this indoors with a reservoir with a lid, could I run the hose from the pump up through a pvc pipe with a large enough diameter to encircle the drains?

Hey Hoocho, I discovered your channel recently. Very interesting content. Thank you! Now for the conundrum of having an inlet hose and a drain hose on the same fitting under the table...you're using an external thread on your design to clamp the fitting to the table. If you switch to an internal thread (where the part under the table is female and the part above the table is male), then you can have both the inlet and outlet ports under the table. If you want more details, I'll be happy to oblige. Source: I work with commercial flood tables.

Hey Hoocho, how about extending the screw thread length as a means for making the flood drain device height adjustable? So all you will need to do is screw in and out to change the height down and up.

Maybe combine the old design with this new circular design and put 2 seperate cylinders (tubes) in one big chamber (tube) so its one tube holding two that can be seperated under the table being able to move the resevoir from under the table. Something like ( 0 0 )

I really like the idea of your flood and drain. However, I just letting the drain free fall back into your container holding your nutrients. There’s no lid on it and actually have any fitting coming out of the lid going to the flood light coming out of the drain going back into the container through the lid will keep mosquitoes down With your big problem with water like that I know it’s not quite standing water, but mosquitoes have become tough little boogers

I am trying to understand the Flood & Drain process. I have just created one myself and want to ensure I'm doing it correctly. Is the bed meant to fully empty or is it meant to drain only to a nominal level set by the riser? & when the pump turns off, do you have a valve to prevent the water draining back through the pump. Because Hoocho's inlets are at the very bottom. So if the pump is turned off, it will flood back through the inlets leaving the bed dry unless there is a one directional flow valve.

I believe the bed is meant to empty completely. And you can have more than one cycle per day. I guess what you need to do is experiment, because how much moisture is retained between cycles is dependant on so many variables and how much moisture you want to retain between cycles depends on what you are growing. For example if you are growing water plants you may need to cycle over and over all day and night long.

I subscribed to your channel quite some time ago and mate, you're quite the legend and your stuff is awesome and inspiring. .. and a fellow Aussie too.. I'm a 3D printer/prototype professional and not to criticize you hugely but you are shooting yourself in the head showing prints that are really poor in quality although I'm totally sure they just work perfectly... Maybe some more time post processing?.. However.. I've looked super carefully at what you have in your video. Its my sole opinion that if you tweak some more settings in your slicer and printer, that you'd pop off something really amazing, straight off the bed. It looks like you're using PETG which can be finnicky at times..I think in another video you had a couple of Ender3 printers which are totally up for the task. Can I ask what the slicer software you use is? Now I know there will be critics towards my post here and that's ok with me.. but.. What i will do is subscribe to your Patreon and grab the file, then i will tweak my slicer etc. and stream the whole print so people can see how awesome your invention is and how awesome it can print. Keep up your great work mate, I love your chi man ...

How do you manage PFAS?/plastic leachates. Is print media safe? PVC is no good, UPVC is questionable. What filament is nutrient stable? No one wants to poison anyone that eats things grown from this stuff.

Mate, I think I know why you're getting so much stringing in your prints; PETG gets VERY stringy when it's wet and.... well... you work in some humid environments!! Before you print, try drying your filament in the oven at 70C for a few hours and then get some enclosures for your printers to keep the humid air out while you print. That should hopefully help a lot as there is only so much retraction you can dial in before print quality suffers too.

It's kinda sad that the bulk of the engineering in the final part was done by Jacob who clearly went with an open-source "share the knowledge & help as many people as possible" mindset.. But because he doesn't have a platform & ppl have no way of reaching out to him, his design is now locked behind a pay wall that he isn't even profiting from 😔 Hurray for parasitic capitalism (in the most sarcastic sense possible) To be clear, I'm not against capitalism. *_I am_* against someone not being compensated for something they had a large part in making a reality! And also in the monetization of someone else's effort that was put out for the benefit of all! If you want to see a real world & large scale example of this; just look up the story behind the creator of insulin who realized how many lives it would save, and how Big Pharma took his invention and locked it behind patents w/ a legal loophole to profit *_billions_* off of medicine many ppl need everyday just to live properly 💯

His designs were based upon my designs. So the ideas are iterative… And the fact that none of the designs were build upon existing engineering and created from the ground up. Kinda undermines your assertion that the bulk of engineering work was done already. This is also forgetting the fact that single point flood and drain points have been around for years. Chilli chump has his own version which is also behind a paywall. People expect everything for free when in reality there is quite a bit of effort that goes into all of the above. Jacob gifted me the files as thanks for content over the years helping him. I have no problem with any of the actions taken here.

@@Hoocho I was just going based off what you specifically pointed out in the video that your idea gave him the inspiration but upon looking at it, he _didn't modify_ your design but engineered his own completely different product that does the same function more efficiently. Which you then turned around and tweaked his design to your specifications. It seemed pretty straightforward to me when you explained it, but if I somehow misunderstood thats my apology. Because like you stated single point flood/drain valves aren't a new concept. Imo that means someone seeing a video of a person attempting utilize them in new way and doing so themselves isn't equivalent to someone actually _creating_ a finished proprietary product and somebody else making slight tweaks then monetizing it for themselves.. The way you worded this video made it seem like that is exactly what happened here. But I'd say if a person can look at the changes to your updated design from the original and they wouldn't be able to find complementary engineering components to all those changes directly in Jacob's design, then you'd be correct in saying he didn't carry a relevant portion of the engineering in this product lol Also pointing out the fact that viewers gain inspiration, entertainment, etc. from a creator over any amount of time isn't really relevant since that is already an equivalent exchange. It's _because_ we gain something from watching that we do so, and inversely our views are the _sole reason_ creators are able to get monetization from ads & sponsors. If you didn't think you were already getting fairly compensated for us watching your videos then you wouldn't be spending effort on repeatedly making them 🤔 Anyways I digress. I am sorry if I was wrong and unjustly offended you 🙏 And if I wasn't, I implore you to put yourself in another's shoes and think how you'd feel if someone ✂️ you out of monetizing a design you spent a lot of time on and shared with them out of goodwill. I'd really value your opinion on this topic: The safety aspect of using a 3D printed part in a hydroponic system vs.. you know some injection molded part made in some Chinese factory Some people in the 3D printing community are trying to lead me to believe 3D printed parts (like a hydroponic grow tower) aren't safe because they aren't 'food-safe' but I feel like they must not grasp that in agriculture absolutely none of the plastics used from netcups to irigation tubing to garden hoses to plant pots are ever... ever 'food-safe'

Yeah, growers pots are made of recycled plastic… There’s so much hypocrisy. They won’t use virgin PETG for a wicking system but they’ll happily water their garden with a non food grade vinyl hose
