Hey Ben! The white substance is efflorescence, which has been called “natural graffiti.” Meaning “blooming” in French, it occurs when moisture gets behind concrete, stone or brick and picks up salts. The moisture wicks to the surface and evaporates, leaving salty deposits behind. Sometimes the salts come from the masonry materials themselves. Or they can be in the sand or other bedding underneath. And, yes, de-icing products could also be the culprit. Rock salt and de-icers that contain calcium chloride are the worst. The “snot” dripping from the balcony is ; Efflorescence is a chalky white salt residue that can occur with any product containing cement. As moisture migrates up to the surface of the concrete, it carries along with it calcium salts from within the concrete. When the salts reach the surface, they react with CO2 in the air and form insoluble calcium carbonate. There is an efflorescence remover. But it will always comeback no matter what you do. A 20%-50% vinegar to water solution will remove it.

Hey Ben the white stains coming off of your house and staining the concrete is called efflorescence. It is caused by the stucco cement reacting with the water it comes in contact with (I can imagine you get a lot of rain) causing these white stains. You can buy a product called efflorescence remover that will take the stains off but you will have to keep washing the area every so often as the reaction won't stop. Cheers from Vancouver, Canada.

Your driveway staining could be the Efflorescence (salts) from the cement used in your balconies above your garage. I capped a cement stope with pavers on my house. It’s 10 years later and there is still some staining. Thankfully I used a light color stone.

I have about 25k to put down on a house so I hope I can find something I been renting my whole life never owned my own home.
