Frankie Ren I bought a Cimmaron tent from Wal Mart, it was last man standing out of a display post near miss by a tornado. no problems until it was left in the sun too long. totally rotted. until then, I was unaware of this problem with nylon. well, they stopped carrying this tent. guess they'd rather count on suckers buying their next tent from them!

When I was in Forestry college, we had a Summer camp and I split a lot of wood to heat our cabin. I had a felling ax which I kept super sharp, and a splitting ax which was left dull. To split properly, we aimed with the ax head at a 30 degree angle from vertical pointed toward the outside edge and we worked from the outside of the block in. Hitting vertical just buries your ax instead of splitting. You should test a splitting ax. Hatchets are for Boy Scouts.

Dude, for a cheap sleeping bag checkout the Colman zero degree mummy bag! 60-80 bucks and I have not had a cold night hammock camping in it. It's huge but you will have a cheap warm night! :-) that's my 2 cents... As for the ozark tent? I don't know anyone I hate enough to give it to so just shoot it... maybe some tannerite?? Lol!

True, I'm from Europe, too, I don't know about the US, but here we have Decathlon for cheap, yet very reliable gear. I bought a 19,99 2-person tent just for fun, but it surprised me. It weighs 2.2 kilos and after a nigh long rain, it was still bone dry! The same goes for sleeping bags. I don't have one from them, but I've only read good reviews and for 40-50 euros you can get a pretty good one. I've actually compiled a list of the cheapest yet reliable equipment for beginners/budget backpackers and the total was around 100 euros (including backpack, tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, cooking gear!)

Suggestion....begin using a bivy when testing tents during storms. I have an MSS I was issued, and had a very strong storm pop up. The tent protected us from a large limb, but failed to be waterproof. I was woke up by my girlfriend, who was sleeping in a puddle. I was warm and dry! Bwahahahaha. Instead of destroying that Ozark, consider taking steps to improve the tent to make it usable. It may be interesting if you applied a repellant on it, attached a grommet or two if the tent becomes viable. Seems like a waste to simply destroy it.

Watched this one more then a few times, and decided to make a comment. I think you should have said "budget" instead of "cheap". What you think is cheap some of us think is expensive. Not everyone has a lot of expandable cash....... With that said, I would like to see some reviews on hunting gear. Not guns or ammo, but some gear to help keep a group of hunters warm in mid NOV-mid DEC. Maybe some canvas wall tents, cots, heaters/stoves, clothing etc.

Great review Luke! Just a suggestion on the ozark trail tent (or pool) try to see if it can be fixed (waterproofing materials, seam tape etc.) and if you're successful then give it away to a subscriber. I know some folks who routinely repair their gear (at some point I may be one of them if I don't take care of my gear) and product reviews on those items would be appreciated.

I got my one man tent from Walmart for 51 dollars but I can't try it yet. I had one from Texsport, I think, and it was a great tent and this one is the same design. Weighs 3.4 lbs and is a one man. 34 reviews all averaged 4.4 stars. Might be a tad heavy, but I have no problem with the weight. The full rain fly will keep me dry according to reviews. For a sleeping bag, I think a Ledge Featherlite zero degree bag weighs 4 lbs and cost 60 dollars at Amazon. I have a packable down jacket that I wear for cold nights. That way, I can use it during the day also. Long underwear drawers are cheap also and don't add much weight. I don't think your pad had any insulation at all. I do carry a heavy nearly 3 lb pad that is 24 inches wide and self inflating. My dog can walk on it without puncturing it and it's comfortable and warm. I sleep on a cement floor with it no problem. Liked the target practice. I'm guessing you didn't stay at a state park.

Hey Luke, Have you ever tried the old Boy Scout trick of smearing liquid dish soap over the outside of your cook pots before putting them over/in the fire for cooking? the black fire char mostly comes off with no scrubbing. Just curious, haven't seen anyone do this in years. Probably best done when car camping with a large available amount of water..

Some people don't have the money to buy tent that cost over a $100.00 dollars. They buy tents at Wall-Mart or places like it, so they can take their kids camping. Why not tell them what they can do to make their tent a little better. I myself live in an area that I have have three state parks I can go to. Hanging Rock state park, Pilot Mt. state park and Stone Mt. state park. If you drive around the camp grounds, you mostly see Coleman's tents, some Kelty tents and Wall-Mart tents. To be fair about it, tell what they do to make their tent work till they can get a better tent. And soon or later they buy a better tent. Its like cars you always want a better car. And yes some of Wall-Mart mess is Junk! All of my old camping shuff was Military and Boy Scout. Still have my Alice pack I had at Fort Bragg. I do have a Savage Rifle like yours. But my trigger on my old Springfield is better, and its 46-year-old. Still shoots great. I would like to see you do a backpack over night to Mt. Mitchell or the Uwharrie National Forest. Great places to do an over night. Check Uwharrie out.

Outdoor vitals is a fairly new company and a young company. They have an impressive story and I would encourage everyone to go to their website and read a little bit. As far as selling on Walmarts e-commerce site this is new to me. I took a look at what was offered on the Walmart site and at this time I only found sleeping bags. I suspect they will not sell their entire line on Walmart and what items they do are either overstocks or low-cost synthetic solutions from their sleeping bag lineup which is fairly comprehensive. Outdoor vitals provide low-cost solutions as well as very good bang for the buck gear which the tent is one of. I could not find the tent on the Walmart site and I suspect it is not sold there. This is their first tent and of course there will be improvements to be made however it appears to be a great tent for the money and not many reviews have been done on the ⛺️. In reality the tent is a three season and with as much airflow as it provides I would not consider it for cold weather. These guys are from the west and the tent was in my opinion geared towards warm weather. I own the summit 30° down sleeping bag. I would encourage you to do a review on these. I know I really like it. The summit series has gone through upgrades already and to my knowledge I have a first generation. I used the Summit 30 in temperatures ranging from 30° to 50° and I did not zip it up all the way. I was toasty with my Klymit Static V insulated pad.

I am totally confused by this. I went to walmart.com and they do offer the outdoor vital sleeping bags. But only online I believe? I almost always walk through the aisles at Walmart just looking for sales and I have never noticed an OV bag there. I thought part of the Outdoor Vitals thing was to not sell wholesale. Not complaining by any means, I have a 20 and 30 degree aeries and have no complaints.

Luke, Good video as always. New to camping, I bought a few items from Outdoor Vitals. I have found them to be of good quality and at a good price. Agree that the tent is not meant for long backpacking trips but for a guy like me, probably not hiking much more than 5 miles or just car camping. It’s perfect for the price. I did my own review. If you want to see a review from a newcomers perspective, check it out. I also reviewed their 20 degree summit down sleeping bag. I’d like to see you test that and give you’re opinion. Back to the tent... I see what you mean about the rain fly and possibly restricting circulation. I may just sew a couple of loops in so I can guy it out. What do you think?

Test the two sub $100 6 person dome tents Sams club sells. They come with aliminum poles. Same tents are put out under Mountainsmith. If you are interested in viewers never allow anyone including some childish phone app to ridecule anyone for an addiction. That move cost you one like today.

I don't understand the challenge. Just about every single thing one can buy today is made fully or in parts in the far east (China, India ,Thailand ,etc). The fact that most of the "brand" products are priced at top dollar does not make them less made in China. I used to buy expensive equipment and spend a good deal of time tending and maintaining it, until about 8 years ago on a motorcycle camping trip found out that my 300 plus bucks tent was made in China and leaked, motorcycled to home depot ( happened to be be the closest store) got a poly tarp an covered my 300 plus buck tent. Since then it is Walmart for me, cheaper same kind of maintenance and if you have to dump it, is only fifty bucks or less. By the way, still using the HD poly tarp, with zero maintenance.

Great idea . I think a series of videos about inexpensive gear and how to make the best of them would be interesting. Not everyone can afford top end products. Showing how to enjoy the outdoors without spending a fortune will encourage folks to get outside even if they can't afford the expensive brand names. Keep up the great work 👍

I have that same yellow one man tent from Walmart. I haven't used it yet but I picked up some seam sealer and silicone spray to use on it before I take it out. Do you think it would be decent if I sealed the seams and sprayed it with silicone?

After seeing the end result of this camp I think I will definitely waterproof my tent the best I can and take a tarp to hang over it as well. Guess I'll be shopping for a good inexpensive one man tent again.😂😂

BRS stove is fantastic for backpacking. Surprisingly durable for the size/weight and the output is fine for boiling water. I switched to this stove as i was able to get my cook kit weight extremely low. And for the price you can’t beat it.

Glad to see you mentioned safety with younger persons and weapons. Just one very small point. Never ever leave a weapon and ammo unattended. Even if you think you are the only person for miles. Weapon safety is of the upmost importance along side safe weapon handling.

Absolutely love the concept! As a newer backpacker with a small budget, it is nice to hear truthful firsthand info as these products are tempting to purchase during a startup phase. Aside from not being able to drop 100's sometimes 1000's to get a premier setup on the first go round, these are likely products that are highly visible in stores and help us sort through what actually has realtime application/ value.

you said the good tent was almost $200 dollars. what if you added a $10 tarp over the $25 tent. most hammockers put a tarp over their hammocks. I would think that would solve the leaking problem.

I forgot to comment when you made this vid...I almost lost it when you pulled out the Ozark trail tent remembering the total fail when you tested it. Because mine looked just like yours did after the rain. And mine was melted snow! I had even seam sealed it! Before you even got into the proposed fate of this tent, I was thinking a great tannerite target! Then when you said you were thinking of another "shoot out" ...great minds! But if you want to do a charitable act, I agree with a comment about sending it to a town in the desert somewhere. It could be donated to a charity with a warning, not for rainy weather!
