I don't can't but love videos like this. Especially snowstorm and thunderstorm ones. The rain sounds great. For a short time. I couldn't take 10 hours of it. Earplugs for me wouldn't be an option due to tinnitus. Headphones with KZbin to breakup the constant rain I could do.

My wife and I are senior citizens, and I never planned on bugging out to somewhere if things got bad. I figure I know where I am at the best and prepare for the worse and hunker down. I make sure we have a 6 months supply of our medications on hand and if there is a weather situation in our area, I make sure the car gas tank is full, my 5 gallon gas jugs are full, My two propane tanks for the grill are full and plenty of bottled water and draw up 4- 5 gallon buckets of water to use in an emergency. I also keep a small solar charger and extra batteries as well as portable personal fans. I also keep my 9mm gun and plenty of hollow point ammunition on hand. I never could understand people in an emergency, like a hurricane that they knew was coming to not prepare and for them to ask when the government was going to get them relief. I always felt that if the government is your emergency plan, you need to get a new one!

Also, consider blacking out a single room, focus on making that room the most secure go to room in the house, maybe work towards having it be a secret panic room. In an SHTF scenario, they will come, but they will leave if they can't find you in the house.

Good plan, but I would advise that you tell no one about this set up lest you get uninvited guests showing up during a crisis. Like Fly suggested, have one room blacked out and secured so that could be where you stay and store your supplies. Again a great plan, I just hope that you never really have to use it, but best to have it and not need than need it and not have it. One final thought, make sure the Government doesn't know about this plan of yours.

Having been in the Army for over 22 years now, I have worn three different generations of cold weather gear. The gray parka and trousers you slept in are part of a clothing system, and are not really intended to be worn over your regular uniform, or in your case, the clothing you were wearing. When worn with the correct layers of silk weight base layer, the grid fleece mid layer, and then the ECW parka and trousers, you can stay fairly warm to temperatures well below zero. The whole purpose of that clothing system is to trap the warm air between your body and the different layers, while wicking moisture to the outside. If you were wearing any cotton garments under the ECW clothing, even the slightest amount of moisture absorbed by the cotton will draw away body heat and you'll get cold. One other suggestion...get a poncho liner. In the absence of a sleeping bag itself, the poncho liner inside the bivy cover, along with some cold weather clothing will still keep you somewhat warm, and not quite as miserable. Great video though. Contrary to popular belief, we actually do get issued some decent gear in the military, and if used properly will certainly keep you alive, if not somewhat comfortable.

My father was in the British Army from 16 to 55 (boy soldier through to Major). He told me during the Gulf War in the cold desert night, the trick was to cook your boil-in-the-bag rations unopened, throw the bag (unopened) into your sleeping bag whilst you drank tea made with the water-then climb in to your warm sleeping bag to eat your dinner.

I carry a low power, battery powered, portable Ham Radio and antenna with me when I back pack. (Yeasu FT-817 radio, Home made dipole antenna, Bioenno 3ah 12V battery pack) Total weights is just under 4 pounds including the battery. Once set up I can talk to the world, literally. The battery will last for 3 nights operation. So my late fall and winter camping is always a combination of two of my hobbies. Never a boring moment when you can have a conversation with someone in New Zealand, while in the back woods away from all cell service and civilization.

I served from 79 to 91. During training one year, we went on a bivouac in late January. Only my Army issued sleeping bag, tarp, and mat and the cold weather gear i was wearing. We slept through hours of freezing rain. Then awoke to a chilly 15° F. I slept great and remained quite warm and dry in my bag. But rain leak onto the outside of my zipper and it was frozen in a block of ice. It took me 15 minutes to get out of that thing. All the while my squad buddies stood around laughing their asses off.

Liked the vid, always curious how non-military like/use our gear. Overall, pretty good. Some tips to make life easier: When hiking, carry a MRE entree as close to your body as possible, this negates having to use a heater or fire and you can eat right away. Open your MREs long-ways, and just eat from the bag that way you dont have to dirty cookware. If you DO choose to use the heater, place it, with the entrees back in the box which the entree came out of...it will heat better/faster,and when done, it may still have enough warmth left to warm something else up with. The PCU Level 7 jacket/pants are meant to be worn (a) with other components of the PCU system, and (B) is really just for static activities...guard duty and similar things. And with just a bivvy,, you should use either a sleep pad,or cut evergreen boughs and use them to sleep on, as you lose quite a bit of your body's warmth through contact with the ground. You would be surprised at what a difference this makes. In the temps you were operating at, I wouldve brought either the whole 3 component MSS AND a poncho liner and/or, even a wool blanket,JIC, depending on how cold/warm of a sleeper you are, or, going 'old school', use the Extreme Cold OD sleeping bag- say 'old school', but I was in when these were still issued. I STILL prefer either the Extreme cold, or Intermediate cold weather OD bags to this day, with a gore=tex bivvy of some brand over whichever I use. Well, thats all from me. I love your positive attitude and vibe, and the fact your always, ALWAYS smiling. I wish I could be more like you ,y friend, but I guess thats a different story. Please keep making vids like this. Keep up the good work, Alan PS:Nice choice of movie to watch, alone,in the woods, at night. Also, watch out for bigfeets.

I’m glad to hear what you said about bugging out. My philosophy is...don’t bug out. Unless your life is in danger from forest fire, hurricane, earthquakes, ect, do not bug out. Why would you leave your home, with all of your preps? Unless, you have a well designed location. People that think they’ll live in the woods for months, are in for a rude awakening.

I am so glad to hear your comments about "buggin out". I have been telling people the same thing for over 30 years. What really gets me is that most of the folks who say they are going to bug out have never even tried to carry their "bug out" pack for any period of time at all. Much less actually tried to carry it thru the woods. Your comments were spot on and should be heeded.. Thanks for what I consider one of the best and for sure the most relate able gear review channels on you tube. I am a johnny come lately to your channel but am catching up, 1 video at a time. Thanks for your honesty in your reviews and for your taking the time to share..

Hey, Luke, I wish in your show notes you would include the dates you filmed your adventure. I live in northwest Georgia, so I'm always curious how your weather compares to what we're getting down here (usually a 10 to 20 degree difference!). Knowing the dates would help in putting in perspective what your weather was compared to ours. Viewers from elsewhere might enjoy that comparison also. Keep the adventures coming!

*This was SO good!!! Just found your channel and will go back over your older ones, I have many questions and I am sure the answers are all to be found. I was really into camping, bushcrafting and so on for decades until health and age curtailed it, but I have so many memories - I can still smell the pines where I used to camp so often, still hear the sounds... thanks for reminding me of how great it was. All the best to you and yours.*

Luke, I really like your channel very much. You have tons of common sense. I grew up in Washington, DC and I spent my life in the woods near my parents home. Every Saturday & Sunday all my neighbors and I would spend the entire weekend in the woods. We'd take 2 dogs and all of us had walking sticks. Very very nice times. I still love camping today. Love hearing about your experiences Brotha.

A point of coaching. Your ground sheet should not be sticking out from under your tent like that. It will catch rain water and run it under the tent floor. Any little leak will get water in your tent. Instead, the tent should overhang past the edge of the ground sheet an inch or so all the way around. Think like shingles on a roof.

So...for about 2 years now, I have been enjoying outdoor "camping" or "bug-out" vids. I am usually disappointed by the hosts devolving into character cracks against some who might leave questions they deem dumb, or criticism that rubs them the wrong way. To my point, I want to thank you for having probably the most informative and above all POSITIVE attitude of any of these offerings. Your cheerful demeanor, leaves only room for people to learn, and feel confident about bush exploration.

Camping out alone is always more exciting. I like it cause one has to be entirely reliant on the skills a person has learned to stay comfortable. It was good to hear you mention about fire wood, when you think you have enough double it. I had that learning curve many years ago and always triple what I think I need after a five day rainstorm I had the luxury of being in.

I use a poncho as a tarp, string it so one corner is low and the opposite one is high, then tie the hood up as a peak. It's tight, sheds water very well, provides an incredibly large amount of coverage, and the low corner is excellent for collecting rain water. A collapsible water container is great for this.

Add a poncho liner to the bivy bag. When facing rain, freezing rain, and snow it is best to use a strong center line to support the tarps. That will reduce any ponding which can overload the tarp. Good Luck, Rick

Your tarp needs to be at a more severe angle when you're expecting snow or ice. It's the same principle as you will see with steep roofs in high-mountain villages. You don't want your tarp to start sagging under the weight of snow or ice.

Ice storms in wooded areas are no joke. About 6 yrs. ago we had an ice storm, no power for 5 days. I remember every 3-5 minutes the sound of a limb breaking off a tree, transformers blowing up, etc. In such conditions, make sure to look up for widow makers before stopping even for a break. Walking on ice is not much fun. The best idea is to get to a good location before the ice hits, otherwise you could be in for a miserable few days. Thanks for sharing your trip.
