Turning the laser off just gets rid of the dot, has nothing to do with measurement distance, which is 12:1, meaning a 1" circle at 12" away, 2" at 24" away, etc. If you want to hold it right up against something, you can do that too, but no need to turn the laser on or off for that. I wouldn't even bother turning it off unless you are aiming it at something that could be damaged, like an eyeball, or a camera sensor, etc. or are doing a very long series of measurements and want the battery to last longer.

Since it's the T600A (not the T600), I was hoping you would show the emissivity setting. Press the left and right buttons simultaneously so you can change it to anywhere inbetween 0.1 and 1.0

Yeah i didn't do on this one...but on this 600A...emissivity test is done by pressing the first and second button simultaneously, and this unit i have goes from E - 0.1 to 0.99 which is the same field you just commented, its not a bad device for the price, i gotta say.
