Just 'cause you're low on funds doesn't mean you can't have a nice car. A cheap spray gun and some cheap automotive paint is all you need for a really nice paint job. Really. Special Thanks to Rockrooster footwear :)
Tools and Materials:
Spray Gun: www.amazon.com...
Paint: tcpglobal.com/...
Extra Reducer: tcpglobal.com/...
Sealer: (You do not have to use sealer): myautovaluesto... - Not thinned or reduced

Absolutely true. If you notice - a lot of videos where the paint turns out perfect is on flat surfaces. It's always harder to get the paint to lay completely flat on a vertical surface as you have to beware of runs. I never try to hide orange peel either because I want to show how the paint really behaves. This is as flat as this paint lays - It was as wet as you could get it w/o running it. Heck it's 150 bucks for the gallon kit - it's going to lay down like Dupont? Maybe reducing it a bit more would help but I already went much further than the can's mix ration

Thank you for showing alternative options! And lower costs ideas. Paint is so expensive these days! In the early 80s . When I was a active body man . A gallon dupont centary Was 30 bucks, a gallon of reducer was 13 bucks.

You're welcome. You're right on the money! I could paint a car back then (early 80's) for $600 bucks using Dupont Centari and make right around $400 (using my dads sand paper and stuff). That paint was great too. You could lay it on nice and wet, it hardly ever ran and would flow out real well. Go in the house - come out 15 minutes after the last coat and it looked 5 times better than when you left. Today $460 for a gallon of red metallic not inc. hardener and reducer - and that's Nason - can't imagine what PPG would want. Have a good week end.

Yeah man, I want a show quality paint job, but I've got a quality beer budget which is a little better than a standard beer budget ,but it's still not a champagne budget. I've got a friend that is in autobody, and he agreed to paint it eventually. I told him it's not like I'm asking for a deal, he's gotta eat, and he said it's probably still gonna be like 10k, and I know that's sorta cheap these days for something claimed to be show quality. The closer I can get the bodywork to decent, I figure the less he's going to hate me. The part that sucks is we are like 45mins from each other too. I'm definitely willing to help with more bodywork when I get the car over to him. I'm willing to put in work, just train me properly so I'm not wasting time doing things wrong.

Late to the party here. The job looks appropriate for the truck to me. I think the gun (or mix) was a bigger problem than the paint. It's asking a lot of the paint to flow out if it don't hit the panel the way we want it to. I'm able to put down no peel Rustolium with a Binks 7. Lot's of fast thinner, lot's of air at low pressure from about 10 inches moving fast. Makes nice wide and even fan. Takes 4 coats. But no runs, peels or dulls. It loses shine in about 4 years though.

What's your favorite Sata and Iwata?
@niamakhtar2234
@niamakhtar2234 3 жыл бұрын
@@LakesideAutobody Hi Jeff, I have 10 Sata's and generally find that they are difficult to ' dial in' for a novice as you need to move fast, that is why most people use a 1,2 RP for clear coat. However, that being said; the 1,2 is a German measuremenr unique to Sata and is not 1.2mm but more close to a 1.3mm. I just use the HVLP for base, lower pressure required and less over spray. The personal preference of mine is the Iwata WS400 1.4HD, good for VHS clears, big wide fan, bigger than a Sata...only one gun has a bigger fan and that is the Devilbiss GPi 1.4mm. Atomization is far superior on the Iwata. So, it is ' Horses for Courses'. If I want a flat glass finish, then the Supernova, comes out. If it is a Candy or Pearl, then the Bellaria 1.3mm comes out to play. Just depends what I feel like on that day. One, must not loose sight of the prevailing fact; yes, technique is important and application is variable depending, on material, temperature, environment. BUT, there is no substitute for knowledge and skill base. By the way, I have no formal training at all, but was self taught due to need and a very steep learning curve. I do hope that I have not genuinely bored you!!! Warmest regards.

This may sound crazy and I know someone is going to crush me on this but for some reason the cheaper paints don't fly out of the gun as well as expensive paints do - I think there is a filler added. Therefore I have to sort of blast it at the vehicle by tightening up the fan a bit. I can get it wetter with a smaller pattern. I do like the TCP global stuff better than the Trinity stuff though. I'm going to do a few more videos onPaintforcars Trinity paint though. I thing with some slower quality reducer it may lay down better. When you cut and buff it however, it looks great.

I love spraying black and you will too. Just make sure your body work is straight. Look at some of my block sanding videos (block sanding playlist). Great thing about black is you can always make repairs and not worry about matching - just tape off the panel you want to paint - spray it and it matches perfect. I like Nason Fulcryl II single stage black. You just mix it and spray. It's acrylic enamel - cheap and works great: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHmWhnt5nLaoaLM. @@classicshoelaces.7340 Yes it will stick to fiberglass but you have to prime it first. It will stick to flexible bumpers on cars today too. If the visor is already painted and its in good condition then you can scuff it lightly with a scuff pad (3M Red) and paint it. Bottom line is auto paint will stick to anything as long as you get the right primer and the primer sticks. If you are talking about aligning the fenders and bed - that should go pretty smooth because trucks are pretty easy to replace parts on. If I didn't answer your ?s ask again if you want :)

(Assuming I'm going to do a single stage urethane paint job anyway, since that's what the 80's vehicle came with...) Extremely helpful video, by the way! 👍

Absolutely - well said. Painters at dealerships and mom and pop shops commonly wet sand and buff every single job - you're always going to have a bit of orange peel or a nib or two. If I lightly wet sanded this and buffed it, it would look awesome - see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poTaq2dtmb16b8U This is the cheapest paint you can buy - I still have the door and it looks exactly the same - held up real nice :)

I don't have one - but good idea. In a shop, when time counts, you sand it as soon as the paper doesn't dig into the paint. You'd wet sand and sort of drag the paper over the paint but not push when the paint is soft. It depends on how fast the paint is drying really - i.e summer temps vs winter temps, temperature in the shop, type of paint, etc. As a general rule of thumb - as soon as you can wet sand with out damaging the paint in the process is how long you'd wait. To be super safe just wait till the next day. If that doesn't answer you ? - ask again.

Not a bad looking job for being white paint. A few questions though. Is there a reason you went with a $30 siphon feed instead of a $10 gravity feed? Perhaps cuz it's single stage or something? Just curious cuz I have a $10 gravity feed (which turns out if it sits around like mine does the needle gets where it doesn't like to move freely) n I have an old siphon feed that was left for dead after my grampa didn't clean it but a bit of love n now it works fine. Also I noticed you were kinda hanging out on the trigger running air through for a second or 2 before pulling it enough for paint to flow. A trick to help the paint lay evenly when the triggers first pulled perhaps? Or just a habit? I was going to ask your opinion on clear coats as far as cheap is concerned until I got to the end n you said it's just single stage. But I wouldn't mind seeing a cheap paint n laying some different brands of clear on, maybe on just a piece of scrap sheet metal n doing a side by side comparison of cheap vs expensive clear coat if you're up for it. Or even just drop some of your experience n knowledge on the topic from your days as a body guy

I bought the gun 'cause I wanted a cheap primer gun as it has a 1.8 mm tip (relatively big for auto paint). Anyway, it sprayed so nice I didn't want to wreck it. So I thought I'd make a painting vid with it. The air coming out at first is just how you're supposed to spray paint. You start off the panel with air and as soon as your gun starts to pass the panel then fluid. So. air fluid air .... air fluid air... etc. Great suggestion on the clear coat. I do like Select Clear 496-00 from Nason It's not to pricey and works real well here's a vid on BC/CC with that clear: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3imoYBseNybmJI I'll write that down - comparing clear coats - like cheap ones and do a video on that. Any automotive primer will do. I like simple lacquer primer. If you only have a few spots to prime go to autozone and pick up a spray bomb can of primer. Other wise lacquer primer is fine. You can mix it to the thickness you like with regular old lacquer thinner from walmart or HD. Here's what I use: www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/black-diamond-medium-blasting-abrasives?cm_vc=-10005 . If you rattle the frame with an air hammer, that can get a lot of loose stuff off. Also a needle scaler can help or even a sander/grinder with fiber resin discs 24-40 grit. Wire wheel too. I think powder coating is great but $ and not sure if its possible for you to do. Anyway, if you are going to paint it, Eastwood makes a lot of paints for frames that resist rust and are tough as nails. Even brushed on rustoleum is great. Myself, I'm not too much of a perfectionist and I just knock the hell out of it once a year with an air hammer get all the loose stuff off, make sure everything is able to drain i.e. enclosed frame rails etc. They spray the underside with used motor oil. especially the brake lines and fuel lines like this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hImkoGh_m7Knhq8 Let me know what you do to it - very curious :) Jerry

Thanks, I’m trying to get up the nerve to spray a car at home, I did a couple many years ago (1970’s) with straight enamel and one with lacquer. I know nothing about how modern paint acts. On one of my enamel jobs a big June bug landed in the middle of the hood and crawled a couple of feet before getting glued to a stop, what a mess lol.

The bug thing happens - I pick them out with a tweezers before too much crawling. Here's some Paintforcars.com acrylic enamel w/ hardener wet sanded and buffed 1 day later. kzbin.info/www/bejne/poTaq2dtmb16b8U You can wet sand and buff the next day if you're careful but you might want to wait a few days to make sure. Go for it - this paint is pretty easy to use - follow my mix ratio in the description as you have to reduce it more than they say (it's thick paint). Expensive paints lay down a bit nicer but not a big deal, most of the times you have to lightly wet sand and buff any way. If a fly lands in it - pick it out, hit it hard with some paint, wet sand it and buff it. :)

Lakeside Autobody- Thanks for the reply. Nice to know it can be touched up if there’s an issue, that takes a little pressure off.

Is it possible to wet sand single stage to get rid of orange peel? I am finding conflicting information. Thanks!.
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Before BC/CC there was single stage. Many single stage solid color or metallic paints where wet sanded and wheeled before it left the shop. In fact all lacquer jobs were buffed - metallic or solid - it had to be. Here's two examples: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poTaq2dtmb16b8U The next one is metallic - check out the deck lid @ the 13 minute and 17 second mark - kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3urkmSdp99ofNU - deck was wheeled / quarter was not. Hope that answers your question :)

@@LakesideAutobody This is awesome - I really appreciate the content and help! So, to get the best results, what wet sanding process would you recommend - just 1000? Or work my way up from 1000-3000 then buff? Thank you so much! What you are doing here is AMAZING!

You seem to be adjusting the gun a lot while in the middle of the door panel. Is paint building up on the gun or something else effecting your pattern? Aren't you incredibly sticky when you're done spraying? It looks, from the camera, that you are working in a fog bank.
@LakesideAutobody

It's really the first time I used this gun and the first time I sprayed a solid color from TCP global. I'm used to Dupont and PPG and this paint didn't seem to be covering or coming out as well as I'm used to. When I opened the fan adj it seemed to make more fog and dryer spray. So I sort of blasted it at the panel trying to reduce the fog. The gun sprays great - I shot the sealer with it and that came out fine.

@@LakesideAutobody I didn't realize you'd never used the Astro gun before. Do you know what fluid tip this gun comes with? (1.4mm?) ... seems typical. Maybe a little more, or a slower reducer would help? I really appreciate all the work you put into these videos, taking the time to break it down for us hobbyists. Your explanations and demonstrations are detailed and well filmed. Thanks! Edit: I see you replied it's a 1.8 tip. I assume you can even spray surfacer with this gun. Given that, I don't think volume (lack of it) is contributing to your dry spray. Maybe just slow it down with a shot of toluene or something?

@@jimurrata6785 1.8mm! That's why I bought it. I was going to use it to spray primer but it was so nice looking and sprayed so well, I didn't feel like wrecking it yet so I figured I'll make a painting vid with it first. I think it would spray Nason or Dupont stuff real well. It's not the most quality gun (screw threads, etc) but... cool color :)

Stop tinkering with your gun. Set it prior to spraying. You should need never have to mess with after, especially with base. Clear MAYBE. Like I said before relax... you look tense. Hold the trigger and move freely left right up down if needed. In this vid you put to much base for a coat imo. Put a coat and let flash. Just my 2 cents.

When guys start talking about body work I know what they know. The guys who knew the least talked the most. The ones who were the best were humble and didn't talk about themselves. This is single stage paint which means it's not base coat. It gets sprayed differently than BC/CC. Take it easy - every video I make is with different guns and different products to make it applicable to many different folks thus the adjustments on the fly. Again, you should know this if you've done it long enough.

When the paint is wet, metallic flakes do all kinds of crazy things - sink to the bottom, lay all kinds of ways, gather in spots, etc. If you spread grass seed, the best way is to throw it high in that air and let it fall evenly. Here's how you would use that crop dusting idea to stop tiger stipes and mottling - kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3imoYBseNybmJI

When you use a new paint for the first time you have no idea how it will behave - will is flow out after time, will it stay orange peely, will it run easier than PPG or paints that you're used to - etc. Also with out good lighting it's hard to see how it's laying down so you have to look from all angle to see what you're doing... Don't want to come out 5 minutes later and have to fix 5-6 runs. No runs is a really good thing. I'd rather lightly wet sand with some 1500 and buff than fix runs any day. Have a good week :)

This is as wet as this TCP global urethane could put on w/o runs. Maybe with a slower reducer it would have flowed out a bit better like this job done with the same paint but lower temps which allowed it time to lay down or flatten out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3urkmSdp99ofNU A light sanding and buff and it was real nice - like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poTaq2dtmb16b8U

I'm sorry, you sprayed way too dry, spray double wet coat after tack coat so it will lay down. There is no way that orange peel all over is acceptable.
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 3 жыл бұрын
You can spray PPG and Dupont with a wide open fan and it goes on wet and lays flat - not cheaper paints - I think that's why they're cheap. Next time you spray a car with cheap paint take a close up shot of the finished job and send it to the email under the "about" tab. Real close up on an angle. Anyway I'd love to to see it some pics - You have to use Paintforcars or TCP because PPG and Dupont lay right down nice and flat every time - Here's PPG using same method: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKCWaJeOYpKqZqs It's automatic with good paint but quite a challenge with the cheaper stuff.

@@LakesideAutobody I disagree, you are spraying too thin. It has to go on heavy enough to flow out , but not enough to run

For real - I'd rather have a bit of orange peel than have to fix runs. Every one paints a bit different. Like I said though PPG and Dupont flatten out as it drys - the cheaper stuff not as much. Have a great week end :)
