Back in 90's I was painting Terra-Gators for a fertilizer plant. My go to gun was a Sharpe conventional with a 2.2 tip. Shot primer, enamel, and even bc/cc with it (flow turned way down). Loved it because of the flow the paint had as well as cup size. Still have it today. Just a pain to clean up.

The placement of cup doesn’t determine conventional or HVLP. The cap determines the type of pattern. Example I have a DeVebiss GPI with conventional cap (gravity fed) for base. GTI Prolite with a LVLP (gravity fed) cap for clear. They sell new siphon guns with a HVLP caps.

I picked up a Thor Model #7 (made by Binks) at a swap meet 30 years ago. After the development of the internet, I was able to research the Thor brand. It seems that when Binks first introduced the #7 they used the "Thor" name. Binks sold the Thor#7 from approx 1927-1935. My old swap meet, siphon feed gun is well over 90 years old and does a couple complete paint jobs per year and countless smaller projects.

Could you make a video on the specifics of using bondo and getting the seam to disappear? I've tried multiple tests with scrap metal and pieces of fenders pulled from the junkyard. There is always a noticeable dip or inconsistency in the seam that I can't work out. Would switching to a finer filler at this stage benefit me?
@LakesideAutobodyКүн бұрын
Don't switch - use regular filler. I will be doing a bunch of rust repair vids coming up and will surely address that. For now though this might help - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKeTpnVjj9ulfNE Tap your seam down and follow this video exactly to hide the seam. Keep asking ?s my friend - you'll get this for sure :)

I like conventional spray guns because you can set them down and they’re not top heavy when you’re holding them. I tend to use gravity fed ones for small jobs because the disposable paint cups makes clean up really fast but when I have a big project or a project I really care about I’m busting out my Binks Thor Model 7 that was made in 1937. I’ve never seen anything lay down paint as smooth as it does. I have a couple spray guns and I’d gladly give them up before I ever let go of that Binks.

Any tips or things to consider when trying to make sure the patch is completely flush to the rest of the body?
@LakesideAutobodyКүн бұрын
Yes.. Use sheet metal screws and drill the hole in the patch panel a bit bigger so the screw doesn't grab it - pressing it against the other panel. This glue has microscopic spheres in it to prevent squeezing the glue out. Feel free to ask any other ?s.

I only had the opportunity to use Marson and Sharpe siphon guns. The cups always distorted at the top and leaked when tilted too much. I taped a paper shop towel around the cup to catch any leaks. The places I worked would never buy top end spray equipment like Binks or Devilibiss.
@LakesideAutobodyКүн бұрын
That was common - dripping from the cup - had to make sure the gasket was clean but it was hard to keep up with the cleaning. The old rag around the cup worked well.

Cutting out all that rust at the beginning means you lost the shape of the metal. Why reinvent it and then need to skim it with filler to make it look decent?

Great video! For the experts out there, I am considering a combination of the techniques shown here along with welding. Any issues with doing this?
@LakesideAutobody2 күн бұрын
I can't think of any. Why not just use fiberglass reinforced filler instead of fiberglass cloth. It's waterproof and sticks a bit better to metal. You're Idea is fine too - make sure the panel can drain and dry out inside.
