Hi I enjoyed your video. Could advise what a European should bring to Costa Rica to save money. For example would you bring a laptop, mobile phone, travel speakers as these are electronics? Would someone buy a flat screen TV in Panama? If you like clothes from GAP and Berghaus is it better to bring them with you? What is the Amazon mail situation? Is it better to go to Panama city for shopping than Nicaragua?
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica3 жыл бұрын
Yes and YES.... Anything Technical or HiTech. Bring it...I'm going to the US in a couple weeks because I need a new Mac computer. Forget trying to get anything good in Costa Rica. Flat screen...you can buy in Walmart. I saw some today. But if you go south, like San Vito...forget it. But you can by it San Jose when you arrive at WalMart or they do have an OfficeDepot in San Jose. High End Clothes, bring them with you. You might find them here...but most likely, they are just cheap "Knock Offs" I paid $150 for some Nike shoes...lasted 3 weeks. (NOT real Nikes) Amazon, yes you can get some things shipped from Amazon. NOT every seller on Amazon ships to Costa Rica. But, you will pay a lot in Custom Fees. Good news....Amazon figures that and you pay them. But, Costa Rica doesn't have regular mail like US. No, 911 address system. but People do buy from Amazon here. NOT Much, but they do. Better to go to Panama and buy...and you can get it much cheaper there. We try to go to Panama and buy 3 months supply of groceries....and save hundreds of dollars on each trip.

Thanks for your in-depth research! I noticed in a previous video that you are a winemaker. Being one myself, I'm wondering where you get your resources. Do you make fruit wine or grape wine? @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, I don't think you can successfully grow grapes here, but I can't prove it as I have not tried. I just know I can't find any local grapes and buying grapes are expensive here (I'm thinking all imported). I make fruit wine and it's a lot of fun to experiment with the huge selection of fruit here in CR. @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica3 жыл бұрын
Depends on where you live. In the city or very near the city, internet is OK....in Touristy places the internet can even be GREAT. But who wants to live in touristy areas... not many, right. In remote areas....where most people who come to this country want live, the internet can be terrible, but it is getting better everywhere, because CR is installing Fiber Optic, but it takes time. @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica3 жыл бұрын
The wifi is good depending on where you choose to live.. In the city, it can be great, but in remote areas where most Gringos choose to live it can be slow. When renting in Costa Rica....you seldom ever rent with appliances in the house. Unless you are renting a fully furnish place, most places come with ONLY THE WALLS. You are NOT in Gringo country.

In most cases it is the Landlord...but I have rented in one or two where the owner told me it was my responsibility.
