Hacking or using a shorter rod doesn't shorten the shift. On a shifter in a car the fulcrum point is changed and thus the movement on the shift lever is less. Still a good video Tom. Keep it up Gents
@LEVELMotorsports3 жыл бұрын
Came here to say this after watching the video. This is 100% correct.

The pivot angle is not reduced as it would be if the fulcrum point was moved (like it is with some automotive short shift kits), but the distance your hand moves from the centre reduces as you shorten the lever.

This is a really cool mod. I just wish that there was a clear-cut way to prohibit this shifter from getting the error where it selects the wrong gear. I've received a replacement from Fanatec, the replacement has the same intermittent problem, I've tried Fanatec's recommendation of grounding my sim rig, I've tried the DIY repairs (readjust the magnet, clean the circuit boards, readjust the board connectors, recalibrate in software, insulate the hall effect sensor…) but these repairs only help for a few weeks until the problem reappears =[ See Karl Gosling's video on this problem. The next thing I'll try when the problem reappears is to connect it through USB instead of through my wheelbase.
@robbrown34333 жыл бұрын
When the mis-shifts started on my SECOND Fanatec SQ 1.5 shifter, I refused to send it in for service. I took it apart every time the problem re-emerged, trying all the remedies that I could find online. After all this and seeing Fanatec’s recommendation for grounding, I expect it has something to do with static charge build up. That would explain why so many have success just disassembling and reassembling. I’ve considered doing my own review and showcasing two modifications I did on the shifter to make the shifting more stiff! I’m stupid enough to still want a Podium level shifter from Fanatec! Bring it.

Shortening the rod doesn’t make it a shorter throw. The gate is still the same distance as it was before. You are getting the placebo effect. It’s no different than when ricers take their stock civics and take a Dremel to their shifter rod lol.
@boostedmedia3 жыл бұрын
It does shorten the throw. Primary school mathematics. Even demonstrated if the video by the fact that the knob no longer interferes with the shifter. Lol
@PatrickKline3 жыл бұрын
All I’m saying is if you’re around enough real cars cutting the rod doesn’t shorten the throw. If that were the case then you wouldn’t have actual short throw assemblies that completely replace the entire shifter assembly. Companies would save a whole lot of money and R&D time to just sell a shorter rod lol. Maybe on a simulator it may work but lowering the value of Z(height) does not make the distance of X and Y any shorter. The gate is still the same distance between 1st and 2nd as it was prior. The throw of a gear box is not the height of the shifter rather than the distance between 2 gears. I’ve never taken my Fanatec apart but speaking on a real car this isn’t how it works.
@boostedmedia3 жыл бұрын
So you’re saying if the shifter was 10 meters long your arm would still move the same amount between gears? Sorry but you’re incorrect in this context. The angle at the base remains the same as you said because the mechanism isn’t altered. But lowering the lever reduces the distance between gears at the top of the lever as demonstrated in the video. If the angle was increased by moving the fulcrum then you’d be correct. But it isn’t.
@Marcyo1373 жыл бұрын
@Boosted Media I always love watching your content but this video is contributing to the misinformation on what a short shifter actually is. People always just go and cut the shift rod as short as possible and then try and say they have made a "short throw shifter". But this is incorrect as this does not change the linkage inside the shifter (the throw) what so ever. This mod is PURELY FOR LOOKS, and will not decrease the travel needed to actually engage the gears inside the shifter.
@pauldinardi94573 жыл бұрын
Emmm....that's incorrect. Reducing the overall height of the shift nob shortens the movement, Tom inadvertently proves this by showing the extra clearance gained to the hand brake had it been mounted.
@boostedmedia3 жыл бұрын
The pivot angle is not reduced as it would be if the fulcrum point was moved (like it is with some automotive short shift kits), but the distance your hand moves from the centre reduces as you shorten the lever.
@Marcyo1373 жыл бұрын
@@boostedmedia My mistake, the fulcrum point/height and automotive shifters is what i was referring too. Sure you hand moves less but, but inside section stays the same length. The height at the fulcrum point does not change, this change is what give you more leverage and in turn a quicker shift.
