There are lots of ways to sharpen a knife, but ultimately it's just keeping a consistent angle and motion on two sides of a blade to bring it to a fine point. I'll show you how I sharpen and hone my camping, fillet and pocket knifes to shaving sharp.

The two most important survival tools in the woods are a pocket knife and a sharpening stone. If you ever get really lost deep in the wilderness and feel like you'll never be found, simply stop, take out the knife and start sharpening it. Within 15 to 20 seconds, some know-it-all will appear out of nowhere to tell you you're sharpening it wrong.

"Very clean hair popping sharpness" LFG is the GOAT! My dudes KILLZ the Googan Lab videos. Loving it brother! I was excited when I saw this one. I have a good amount of decent knives, no really expensive blades, but I've always loved to sharpen knives, so the ones I do have, stay sharp. This really helps. Great tips!🤘

Couldn't agree more about the victorinox blades. Cheap, easy to sharpen, and if it gets messed up or lost, your out like $4. These are the knives we learned to use in guide school for these purposes.

Can't go wrong with wet stones either. I've slowly built up my collection to include everyone from 1000grit to 30000grit. Who knew blade sharpening could become so obsessive and cathartic.

Feels like we have been on a similar path Justin even though I am ‘across the pond’. Have always loved collecting knives. I went through the ‘how do I keep them sharp’ process. From wet stones to oil stones, ceramic to steel and all in between with a lot of different blade types (Skandi is my favourite). I love them all and the process that it has taken me through. As you say some very in-depth vids on YT have helped along the way with angles and ‘feel’. Today, my ‘go to’ is my Spyderco 3 angle sharpener for on the go and in the field - just works. Always bring along my hand held strop loaded with some smooth compound. I also use it for my hand forged kitchen knives and my prize possession which is a Mr Itou custom made Damascus kitchen knife with a turquoise handle. I even went on a course here in the UK in forging a knife, lot of fun but wow, hard work but give it a try if you get the opportunity. Still have all my stones and gear but I guess it’s a bit like cooking - don’t over complicate it, just keep it simple

How about comparing brands of sharpeners. Example : I have a Lanski but I've never really been that good with it. Also have the knife killer 1" belt sander with different grits even the leather belt with polishing compound. I'm not great at it but it has worked for me.

The ceramic rod actually takes more off a knife than a butchers steel. Butchers steels are really just meant to realign the edge or "hone" the edge

I recommend the Sharpie method for beginners. Get a black Sharpie and color the bevel, or very edge of the blade. Gently draw the blade across the sharpener and look at where the Sharpie color is being removed. If it is not removing the black color from the edge, adjust your angle until you are removing the black, that’s the optimal angle for that edge! You can keep applying the Sharpie until you develop the muscle memory for the angle and you are good to go! Just do the other steps that Justin mentioned to complete the process.

Great vid Justin. Really was unlucky to have that knife bounce back that time you got cut. I suppose the caveat to having sharp knives is to throw them from a safe distance? 😄 Side note - never been a fan of ceramic "V" sharpeners. I've seen too many edges ruined by not minding the bevel. Case in point, my old Rapala fillet knife. I suspect it's a good marketing strategy to include those crappy sharpeners in knife sets. They ruin blades so that the misled buy more. 😆 Better get on those stone sharpening skills! Really can be quite meditative.

Benchmade has a free life sharp program. You can send to them anytime and they will sharpen it for free. I’ll agree that if you maintain them properly you shouldn’t have to sharpen ever. I prefer to strop mine on a regular basis and hardly ever put them to a stone.

Hey LFG, with the lack of accuracy with newly added broadpoints to your arrows, are you sure that the 'blades' of the point run parallel to the shaft of the arrow? That connection has to be incredibly accurate as the blades becomes wings on your arrow, a small deviation will produce a turn or raise/fall in your arrows flight path. Just a thought.

Love these vids. Can you suggest a good all around EDC 3ish inch fixed blade? Looking for a carry I can also use to clean game, smaller camping chores and normal day to day. Seen decent reviews of Bradford Guardian 3 but would love suggestions.

I have a budget suggestion... The of grid knives all day fixie. Only a 2.25 inch blade, but it has a nice bit of belly, and has adequate handle room. Has all you would need for neck or belt carry with a kydex sheath and has great fit, finish, and factory edge. The budget is able to be achieved by using simple D2 steel which is my only major downside.

One of my favorites in that size class is LT Wright Small Northern Hunter. I'm a big fan of that Alaskan style blade for cleaning game but it's a good all around camp carry that isn't bulky at all. LT puts a good spine on for scraping as well
