I used to shop Rutlands quite a lot and they have really gone down hill in both product and service quality. Bought a "premium" mitre gauge to use in T Track that they supplied. The guide bar was 1.2mm taller than the track slot depth meaning it stuck up above the track and, ultimately, the table. Emailed them and they basically said I had set it up wrong (I've got 4 or 5 other sets of tracks and mitre gauges set up across other tables with no issues). Then when shown digital caliper readings of the track depth and bar thickness they offered to replace it with another mitre gauge (if I sent the other back at my cost). Asked them to measure the bar depth and it was STILL too tall for the slot and would present the SAME issue.

Wow, that throat plate is really bad, but the blade guard is an absolute shocker and a deal breaker. Glad you were not hurt.
@john_beardon3 ай бұрын
Jesus. That Rutland should be recalled just because of the crown guard. That's an absolute disaster waiting to happen. It doesn't matter what the manual says, it shouldn't be possible for that guard to hit the blade under ANY circumstance. Glad you were OK. That could have ended up very badly. I have the Evolution saw and am extremely pleased with it. After seeing this, I am so glad I didn't go for the Rutland despite a bunch of recommendations from KZbinrs who are obviously sponsored and completely glossed over some very obvious flaws in their reviews.
@RagnBoneBrown3 ай бұрын
I don't think anyone is sponsored by Rutlands, I suspect at the most they might have an affiliate relationship (as do I). I think that maybe for newer table saw users who have nothing to compare it to it may well seem like a decent low cost option, but for me if I only had a maximum of £300 to spend, I'd look for something secondhand or save up for the Evo+
@ravenation8756Ай бұрын
The Evolution appears to be a budget version/clone of the Bosch Professional GTS 10XC (sliding table, extending body fence, onboard tool storage etc) but using budget parts. I had a 10XC for years and it was a superb saw so if the Evolution is half the saw then it should still be decent. Longevity of motor/brushes will be interesting to see. I now have the Axminster AP254SB cabinet saw as I needed more precision and the ability to run a dado stack, as you'd expect it's on another level to these jobsite saws.

Great review Keith. Light DIY tool user here. By comparison to my 20 year old Power Devil these two table saws are positively luxurious. I never liked the fence on the Power Devil from the day I got it & have only used it for rough cut jobs where accuracy was not required. I have a Evolution mitre saw already & this Evo table saw looks to be the better of the two here by some margin. The Evo looks a fare bit bigger than my existing saw so if I can find space for it I may well get one for an early Christmas, birthday & fathers day present to myself.

I was going to buy the evolution based on this, but because of the lead time and needing it for a project I ended up going with the excel saw from tools4trade, with an ebay voucher it only cost £170 and has a R&p fence, aluminum throat plate and 254mm blade. So far everything seems pretty well made and square with the exception of the fence to the table, where the fence was leaning in toward the blade. Though I managed to get get it mostly there by packing the nut the fence sits on with masking tape. Also the mitre it came with was very sloppy to the groove but I've got some aluminum tape to pack that out with as well.

I have the rutlands saw and I'm still very happy, but I checked the crown guard and raised the riving knife before I turned it on. I agree that the crown guard is a poor bit of design but once it's set up it cuts well for £100 less than the evolution. I also think the faster brake is very nice to have. For a less than £300 budget I'd still choose the Rutland saw, but for £400 I'd get the evolution

I used a Craftsman jobsite saw for years. It came with an outfeed support extension , and left and right table extensions which allowed for 24" cuts on either side of the blade. The miter gauge was a tic loose, but once you understood it's quirkiness you just kinda adapted. It also came with a solid frame stand, but I only took it with me under certain circumstances. I bought that saw almost 30 years ago during a holiday sale for $100. After a while, every time I was in a big box store I found myself looking at the shiny new models from DeWalt and Bosch with better accuracy and collapsible stands and the such, but I never replaced it. To be fair, I was in the business of home improvements and not fine furniture, but that Craftsman never failed and I knew how to make it work for me.

I have the Rutland's saw and had the same issue with the blade cover. Fortunately when it happened to me it was on startup and the motor stalled. The blade chipped the guard but thankfully it didn't explode. For the money it's not bad at all and I'm still happy with it, but had I watched this before buying it a few months ago, I would have gone with the Evolution.

Thank you for your detailed honest review. I purchased the Rutlands saw 10 months back and not having used with the crown guard did not pick-up on the flaw (extreemly dangerous). I have promptly binned the quard and purchased the Axminster Professional Crown Guard as a replacement. I must have been lucky as none of the alignment issues you raised have been present, I recon factory setup on the unit you tested was at fault, poor quality control. The throat plate only has noticeable flex behind the blade and I find it to be pretty firm in front and to sides of the blade. In general, I am quite happy with the Rutlands Table saw which I purchased on a special offer for £260.00 together with their folding saw stand (R40.00). Must say I like the outfeed table and sliding mitre table features you demonstrated on the Evolution R255TBL+.

Interested in that evolution saw, but something I ran into with my DeWalt is that a typical .75" guide for sleds didn't work in that guides because the guides weren't parallel along their length. So a rail for a crosscut sled wouldn't work because it would be loose at one area of the miter slot, then snag at other points in the slot. Have you tried a rail in the evolution miter track? Or just used the sliding table?

As soon as I saw the title I thought "yep, rutlands". My experience with their equipment has been poor to say the least. Most recently my router motor bearings failed and they are refusing to honour their warranty, claiming 'wear' despite the fact that the router has only had light home use and none of their Ts & Cs say anything about warranty claims being subject to wear. I had a compressor with a failed safety valve, dangerous jamming nail gun, sagging router table, lathe with failed bearings and dodgy headstock casting and replacement parts supplied that were also bad, and wood turning tools where the shafts fell out of the handles as they'd quite literally stuck a square shaft in a round hole. I wouldn't be surprised if the difference you perceive in the noise of the motors is down to the Evolution using much better motor bearings. Thank you for the first honest review I've seen of this saw, the others i've seen have just been glowing praise of a free product made within days or hours of ownership.

@@RagnBoneBrown Nope. I'm now stuck with their £300 lift which itself has several design flaws and a sagging plate, and a £250 router motor that is as good as useless as changing the bearings (Rutlands' only suggested solution) requires that the motor armature be removed which is factory pressed onto the shaft. Also had one of their Makita clone trim routers which came with multiple bases, the plunge base was dangerously wobbly. The only good tools I've had from them have been small simple things like clamping squares, spring clamps, the mitre gauge (available on Banggood and Temu for half the price) and their T track, which I'll begrudgingly admit is the best t track I've been able to find.

Great comparison video Keith and 100% honest as usual. I have the smaller Evolution table saw and concur it's a cracking saw especially for the price. One thing that's impressed me about Evolution is their constant strive for improving and adding quality.

I have the evolution + saw as reviewed in your video and have found it really well made and easy to use. Really pleased to hear that they will be releasing a smaller riving knife, did they indicate when this would be? Great video

At least it sounds like Rutlands has a decent support department. Someday i need to get a new table saw, my 45$ craftsman i got at a pawn store is scary to use, the anti-kickback kept causing the pieces to stop feeding which then just had them sit and burn against the blade, the riving knife also was never able to be inline causing pieces to get stuck as well, basically the safety features made it unsafe, I removed them which now i dont have that problem, but i got to be more careful as i have had a piece that did kickback and nail me in the stomach pretty hard. (At this point the $150 Warrior table saw from Harbor Freight might be safer lol, although it looks even more plastic than the Rutlands)

That Rutland's saw needs to be recalled asap, I can only imagine how many DIY people have bought one of them without knowing all the dangers it holds 😮

It's surprising that there's no regulation against a crown guard like that, isn't it
@Monkeh6163 ай бұрын
@@RagnBoneBrown I don't think there are any specific regulations about table saw designs. There may be product standards - but those are a double edged sword. My mitre saw is missing a large chunk of aluminium and the original blade thanks to a genius product standard which calls for a folding fence to provide more support than you'd ever need. Forget about that just once..

How do you think the Evolution stacks up against the Dewalt? I have the smaller Dewalt than what you used to have but for me its ideal

Evolution have really upped their game IMO, still not the best but closing in on Ryobi
@joehart38263 ай бұрын
More like closing in on DeWalt. Already above Ryobi
@guitarcarfanatic3 ай бұрын
I appreciate these have a bigger cut capacity, but the Dewalt is often available between £350 and £400 when on offer (bought mine earlier this year for £361). It's a big step up in quality so not really sure where these saws fit? When Rutlands launched, it was £100 off and I think thats the only time to buy one of these cheaper saws - when they are sub £250 on offer.
@RagnBoneBrown3 ай бұрын
The DeWalt has an 8" blade, these are 10". Plus the Evo has a sliding table and outfeed. Totally different saws and while the DeWalt is likely to have better build quality and components it doesn't necessarily mean it's the best option for everyone 🤷♂️
@guitarcarfanatic3 ай бұрын
@@RagnBoneBrown Yep, you pay your money and take your choice. I just think these Chinese rebadges represent poor value at RRP. At £250, they become a more reasonable argument. The Rutland's has been reduced by £100 a few times now and I suspect the Evolution will be discounted periodically so at that price point, it will suit a lot of people.

Hey Keith, did you notice any disk vibration on the evolution saw? I bought mine on the first week of its release and noticed it had more vibration of the disk than I was expecting. Turned out the diameter of the arbour was a tad too small making the blade to sit off center. Supergluing a single layer of aluminium foil had solved the vibration problem for me.

No vibration issue on the one I have

My Makita blade guard exploded. The insert was wide and a slice cut off jammed and broke the blade guard. It was quite dramatic. I therefore made a zero clearance insert. I haven’t got round yet to replacing the blade guard.

Very nice video, good review. It doesn’t take much for things to go wrong when using a table saw and the quality of the blade guard, movement in the blade and the insert plate are worrying. 16:02 please wear your eye protection, you only get one set of eyes. I work in engineering and I know of people that have had damage to their eyes, scary stuff.

I got the Rutlands in January and I have NOT had a problem with the crown guard. Not sure why yours behaved that way. The riving knife can be removed by undoing the fixing bolts on the lock. You can then take off the bit of metal to make it into a removable one. I guess that not being removable is a half arsed attempt at safety!
@-Benedict3 ай бұрын
I'll be totally honest with you Keefy - I hate all crown guards, and I make the choice, as a grown adult with considerable experience, operating a solo hobby workshop, to not use them. I feel that they actually detract from safety, because they reduce my vision, without actually protecting against anything except the very unlikely possibility of dropping a workpiece onto the blade from above. Others may disagree, and that's totally fine, but I've genuinely never once attached mine to my current saw. Riving knife, face shield and ear defenders are all absolutely non-negotiable, but my crown guard just sits in a drawer. The only reason it doesn't go straight in the bin is that the manufacturer might moan if I made a warranty claim and didn't return it.
@RagnBoneBrown3 ай бұрын
We all have to make these decisions for ourselves, so no judgement here... I used to not use a crown guard too but with the Axminster cabinet saw the dust extraction was abysmal so the crown guard with it's extraction is a must, and I've kind of got used to using one now 👌
@Monkeh6163 ай бұрын
There's an excellent video from a KZbinr I sadly cannot recall the name of just now on the Sawstop saws where he discusses the use of the crown guard. If it hadn't been for that saw, he wouldn't have a thumb today - but if he'd had a guard on, he wouldn't have had stitches. It takes only one brief moment of inattention or loss of spacial awareness (this can occur to anyone without warning, by the way) to become deeply regretful for not using a guard. Taking them off where they genuinely interfere is fair enough, but otherwise think of them as a seatbelt. Your choice, no judgement.
