The cheaper non-tubeless ones with thinner sidewalls are probably designed to have the support of a tube, so no surprise they're flexy without. Would have been interesting if you tested it with tube as well...yes some of us still run tubes.

@Henry Quinney I guess many of us came in expecting to see some actual cheap tyres compared to higher end tyres. I would of loved to have seen a comparison of ultra cheap mountain bike tyres £5-8 compared to tyres perhaps at £10-20, £20-30, 30-40 and £40+. Personally I don't think I've ever paid more than a tenner for a tyre, often choosing models on clearance but then I'm only a casual off-roader. I just feel Continental should have been mentioned in the title to be fair and honest.
@Malinovic19855 жыл бұрын
@Henry Quinney Hello Henry, I didn't mean to be rude or something like that, just wanted to point out that title of video is somewhat misleading. Anyhow I watched video, like I watch all videos you guys post. I know that without sponsors it would be hard to maintain channel. No hard feelings :).

All this bitching in comments about using just one brand of tyres... Yes, they are sponsored by Conti. No, they are not a review website/channel like mtbr or BikeRadar. This video is not about promoting Conti tyres. It's about differences in tyre choice in general. They just used whoever gave them the goods. You can find same/similar versions of tyres in portfolio of any brand. Just adapt the same information they are giving you in video to your preferred brand. Not even once they mentioned that you should buy Conti tyres over anything else or that they are way better, probably never in any of the videos they did. So how could it be biased? It in fact is mostly the sponsor that keep the channel running and going bigger and bigger, why mock them for it? Thanks Henry, nice video. I was always wondering about the major/subtle differences but not willing to buy all them tyres myself. :)

Great to see Henry out in the trails! I always love his videos. And cmon guys, gmbn have always stated that Continental is one of their sponsors and this video is definetly not a huge ad. Personally I run maxxis minion dhf exo on the front and an assegai dh casing on the rear. The reason I want down this route is because I was forever killing rear tyres on downhill rock gardens even with a tubeless set up (in the space of 5 months I destroyed a minion dhf exo and a nobby nic). So beefed up to a dh casing tyre on the rear and so far so good, although I have lost the pedal efficiency as stated in the video on uphills I'm confident the rear is going to hold out when the slabs and dh rock gardens come up.

Any cross king riders here? I only have one trusty bike, a modified cube race one hardtail, which is used for everything from day to day commuting, grocery shopping, very long mixed XC/Bikeway journies with friends, all the way to a bit of trail riding, looooving flowy trails. More aggressive tyres slow me down too much on the day to day stuff on the street, but the cross king does handle light trails good enough. I have the trail boss heavy fast rolling on the rear (£8 from on-on) Chunky monkey in sticky compound is a great tyre, £15 have that on the front. Also have a Geax Mezcal and Racing ralph 2.3 for xc. Used all kinds of tyres over the years. Keeping an eye on the sales gets the best results! Often can find tyres at less than half price. Don't be too fussy on the make of the tire, just check the tread pattern, how strong it is (weight and protection measures) and the compound . Always go for folding and high TPI.

If you want unbiased, good comparisons look at mbr or bikeradar. Gmbn make great content normally but this seems pretty pointless all from one brand. Maybe if the video title was more transparent it wouldn’t rub people up the wrong way as much.
@Tomcat65415 жыл бұрын
Henry said right in the beginning of this video, that GMBN doesn't really do reviews. All of these bike channels have their specific place. GMBN is great at what they do, Bike Radar is also great at what they do. Even Ollie's old hangout, Cycling Weekly can hit on a good point and make awesome videos. This video was more about how aggressive you should go and how much a tire of different spec can change the entire ride. I found it helpful, partly because I've been considering a set of Der Barons. A thumbs up Like from me!

Interesting at the end recommending a heavier tyre at the rear to the front. I would have thought keep the same casing but look for a better rolling tyre in the rear (low center knobs and good side knobs) as opposed to the front tyre which would have larger knobs all round for grip and braking performance in rowdy conditions. At the moment I run a Botranger XR5 2.6 up front and Botranger SE4 2.4 out back but I might go SE4 2.6 front and rear unless Botranger do a update on the SE3 which I would run out back. Find the XR5 up front a bit too loose in corner transitions on natural trials. No transition knobs on them and the carcass is a bit light too. The Trail King out back with a Der Baron Up Front would probably be a good combo.
@gmbn5 жыл бұрын
Yes Piers that's a great combo for a lot of people who ride road sections between trails. Many people choose to run an aggressive tread pattern in a softer compound up front due to less wear combined with a faster rolling tread pattern in the rear with the thicker DH casing to hold up on rougher sections of trail. It's all personal preference though and depends on the terrain you are riding and what you want out of your tyre setup.

Expected more from this, none of those tires look bad in any way and are from the same brand. A real comparison would encompass both low and high end options, and multiple brands. I ride a hardtail from 2000 and still have the same tires it came with 6 months ago and have a ton of fun and ride faster than most people on the trails with their expensive "mountain bikes," all with barely used parts,probably mostly used to commute to work lol. All this elitism and brand bs are what ruin mtb. Having a $2000+ bike and constantly worrying about which part will save me a half of a gram of weight is what exactly drove me away from road biking and into mtb. Yet it seems thats what mtb has become now.

There is something really important: The more expensive Conti tyres some in lots of different options. You can always choose your series (race king, cross king, mountain king, trail king,...) AND ALSO between the RaceSport Technology and the ProTection Technology, RaceSport is much lighter and thinner, while the ProTection is heavier and thicker and also Tubeless-Ready. The more expensive Black Chili Compound Tyres are always better, it's just that you chose a much heavier Trail King than in the first round.
