The cheap paint that you are using, I use all the time. I love it, it is affordable and I only buy the primary colours + black and white. I have no problem mixing colours. I've been using cheap paints for 30 years and the colours are still as bright, as the day I painted them. I have tried more expensive paints and haven't found them to be any better. Price wise I would rather spend $1.50 per bottle of acrylic paint. Tweny five dollar for one tube of paint is a little pricey. I always use a base coat of colour and then build up my layers of detail. If you are new to painting some other non expensive brands are Folk Art acrylics and Delta acrylics. I have found these paints to be awesome. You really don't need to buy expensive paints to get awesome results. I hope this helps.

What’s your opinion on CraftSmart?
@ShaunKeefe2 жыл бұрын
Michelle Carty - Try a more expensive paint and see if you notice a difference in how it move on canvas, how it blends, and how much pigment is in the paint. Sera Dipp - Not every person who tells you a better way is an "art snob". Sometimes people just know what they are talking about when they recommend better paints. There is a demonstrable difference in quality of paints. You are commenting on a video that literally showed you the difference, point by point..

@@seradipp1224 I also like folk art. I started with apple barrel and folk art coverage puts it to shame bigtime. Maybe I'll try a better one in the future, been looking at the arteza brand on amazon.

I use this brand of cheap paint all the time. I do use the 3 secondary colors to aid with color mixing, but I really like blending, gradients, and glazing with these. Some of my favorite paintings that I've done have been made exclusively with cheap paints, and I will mix cheap with more expensive paints in my work with no ill affects, too!
@thecatladytm71723 жыл бұрын
I actually use cheap paint myself, DecoArt, Anita's all purpose and CeramCoat, and yes while mixing is a bit off sometimes, it is more worth it to me to buy a full rainbow for cheap than just primaries with expensive supplies. Maybe one day I'll use more expensive supplies, who knows, but I definitely won't be switching anytime soon.

Love this video! I’ve been painting nearly a decade and almost exclusively use artdeco paint (used to use the expensive stuff but it was really breaking the bank). Not the red though, definitely need a less transparent red. Definitely agree you need to buy the colors you want though. Generally I only mix them for highlights or shading.

That is a very interesting video. I have never used a cheap acrylic. For now, since I'm still experimenting with this medium, I use student grade acrylics and specifically the brand art creations by talens, el greco, pebeo, stamperia and liquitex basics. Recently I bought the metallic acrylics by sennelier. They are fantastic!
@SyndiaArt4 жыл бұрын
I find the student ranges really really good as well, I would recommend those over 1$ store paints anytime. :o) Hope your are well!
@robertma60682 жыл бұрын
It sounds like cheap paint ends up being almost as expensive, in a way, as you have to use more to get the color you want, as it isnt' immediately as opaque, etc. I'm only a beginner, but it sounds like when it comes to paints of various sorts, and visual art in general, really it's a lot of headache to go cheap. You have to know what you're doing to make up for some of the defecits. But, if you just don't have the money, it's nice to have videos like yours with the iips on how to compensate for defecits.
@SyndiaArt2 жыл бұрын
Fully agree. When wanting to save money I would suggest to but student quality paint at the art supply store and buy super cheap paint brushes at the 1$ store. It's a better strategy than trying to get super cheap paint :o)

This was a very helpful video. I have only used cheap paint. You hit on something that I was most curious about and that was the chalky finish of cheap paint. I really dont like that about it and was wondering if I was doing something wrong. I am new to painting. I would prefer the satin looking finish. Thank you so much!

Thank you for the video, ma'am! Funnily enough, when I started painting, all I had access to were the dollar store style acrylics (apple barrel mostly). Thankfully, a friend gave me a tub of Liquitex thickener, which helps with the versatility. For mixing colors, I found, like you did, that 2 colors were often not very effective. However, through LOTS of trial and error, I found that adding a third color could get me close to the shade I wanted. (Mixing thinned black with blue and yellow seemed to yield a better green, for example.) I still use them a bit, because a talentless hack like myself should avoid spending money for good acrylics on bad paintings. P.S. they can come in handy for when one is going for a particular effect, like a twilight landscape.

Thanks for the tips! P.S. Talent is subjective and you deserve good paints ;) Have a great week ahead.

I’m painting with this cheap acrylic paint at the moment. When I apply it, you can see the bobbles of the canvas coming through it. It’s really thick and gloppy and hard to spread. It sort of sticks to the brush and dries quickly, and it’s difficult to control where the paint ends up. Is the problem here definitely the paint? Or is it maybe a weird bobbly canvas or cheap paintbrush? Or a combination of all three! Haha

I use dollar store acrylic paints for most colors with one exception: reds. Read is the least stable color so I only buy the best quality red with light fastness. For yellow, I'd sometimes use a cheaper lower quality albeit professional paint. For greens, blues, and every other color, dollar store paints will do the job.
@squirrel81612 жыл бұрын
Interesting video, thank you! I wanted to add to your point about dangerous materials in paints - the more expensive paints tend to be the worst! Lead, cadmium, mercury… must be so careful. Awfully expensive to produce, unsafe, but an absolute dream to paint with (oils)! I have a hard time finding these old fashioned paints now as they’re being phased out of high street art stores and only stocked by a few specialists, which is probably a good thing.

When I started painting as a teenager I bought all my paints from the a well known art store. Haven’t painted for a few decades and bought some cheap paint recently for the kids to try painting. I joined them and constantly had issues. Initially I thought maybe I just got old and forgot how to paint and the techniques involved. Over a bit more time k realise the paint just behaved very differently. I dug up a tube of the really old paint from many years ago and it was much more usable.

I use cheap paint and the colors tend to darken a little bit when mixing. My advice is to use the brightest, neon colors like flouresence pink and lemon yellow when creating secondary colors like purple, green and orange.
@tomaaron61873 жыл бұрын
Quite informative. Thank you. Very nicely presented. I purchase all my oils and acrylics at the thrift stores. Often 9 or 10 or so tubes of quality brands for a total $2 or so...also quality brushes, canvases, pastels, crayon pencils, etc. I also like that I can often find unopened tubes, etc from products I used 25 or 35 years ago. I don’t find a lot of difference between cheap and expensive paint for 85% my projects. It’s just the 15% when I’m trying to do a difficult colour or texture.
@thesilverpen2 ай бұрын
if cheap paint is fugitive, then it is less desirable for serious paintings. However, I would think using a UV protective medium and varnish might perhaps solve this?? I use three mediums for pro paint, but that is after a long time of slowly adding a tube here and there of better paint and mediums. Cheap paint was my go to for years.

I am a digital artist, just bought some very very cheap acrylic paint for a medium challenge, it frustrated me and made me doubt myself so much just to get a nice gradient for the sky. When it dries, the painting look so matte, not like the painting other artists done. I even doubted maybe I've bought fake acrylics. Thank you for your video, it answered all the questions I had. I might go and buy some better acrylics. :( Oh, one more thing, cheap acrylics can't build up nice textures.

Well your point about mixing colors, I see. I gave up on making my own secondary colors. Now I buy 12 paints. Black, White, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Turquoise, Cyan, Blue, Purple, and Magenta And I use Apple Barrel which is $2.60 per 16oz bottle. Cheaper than Red Bull

I don’t know if you have access to it or not but you should try Folk Art for the heap comparison. Deco art is horrible compared to Folk Art and Folk Art is less that $2 for the 2oz bottle and most of it has a nice buttery consistency. And I prefer matte finish. I’ve never noticed any smell on any of the deco art, apple barrel, Anitas, or Folk Art

I just discovered you and I am really enjoying all your videos! (Got a set of Van Gogh oil pastels for Xmas and was in need of tutorials as I am new to them). What you say about smells of cheap art supplies is not crazy! I have the same problem with gouach and acrilic. It’s even happened to me with Crealando colouring pencils, Lidl sells them in special campaigns (It’s a massive supermarket chain in Europe, not sure if they are in Canada too). I found I couldnt use them because of the stench that came out as soon as you opened the tin box. Even my 8 year old noticed it. So there! Not so strange! 🙃
