I’ve always used winners choice in my elites but I purchased a set from Compliments custom strings out of Ohio to try out. Andy’s work and customer service is second to none and his string sets are phenomenal. I shoot anywhere from 4-500 shots a week and have had zero issues with peep rotation or serving seperation. Great guy to deal with

Great video Nate. Can you please do a video on string maintenance? Everyone I've asked tells me a different answer. When do I change them? 2-5 years? How do tell when the strings need wax? How much wax? Cheap wax v experience wax? Should I change the strings myself or have it done professionally? How do I fix peep rotation (Hoyt RX3)?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 4 жыл бұрын
I have a video on "When to Change Your String and Cables" that will answer some of these questions. It all depends on how much you shoot and how brutal you are on your equipment. I shoot A TON obviously and get 1.5-2 years out of my string sets. Wax should be rubbed in until it's melted and you can feel the slick nature of it melted into you strands. I use bohning wax products predominantly and like their text Tite line. If you don't have a press and aren't comfortable putting your bow into spec with cam timing, brace height, ata, etc. Then I'd have a shop do the change.

slight correction for viewers coming in 2020/2021! Vec 99 material from Bloodline and BCY 454 are the newest materials for strings and cables, and while major manufacturers haven't jumped on to the new materials yet, I personally prefer the vec 99 material because of their new coating to try to make a wax less bowstring, I currently do not have any problems with it and it is going to last me much longer than my previous set :)

I also have a set of Vapor Trails on my Darton Vapor but sold the bow a year later and didnt get to really test them out. I do have a question, since I have never owned or even shot a compound bow! I did buy a black infinite edge for my daughter after she showed an amazing talent for archery early on and years ago. She shot that thing amazingly until she became a teenager and put down the bow and picked up pom poms instead😖 . I'm sure you can imagine my enthusiasm when she asked me to help her get a birthday present for her boyfriend and mentioned he liked hunting and turns out, never got into archery! I am now going to be purchasing a 'flagship bow' for my daughters boyfriend very soon. An option a lot of the manufacturers have is custom ordering a bow with some color options as well as string and cable color options. Although I can think up a really cool looking bow and string combo for a custom build, I'm not sure what looks cool to someone inexperienced as I am, equals a great choice for performance. Even though these bows can be purchased with some brighter colors and cool color combos, wouldn't it make sense to have a very dark riser and possibly dark or subdued colors for the cables and string for the purpose of trying to stay focused on your sights and target? Maybe, I'm making too much of it, but it would really suck if color of string had an influence on a shooter's ability to focus through a peep and successfully pick up the sight pins with consistency in different lighting situations, even on a small scale. With as much tech and performance these new bows have, if bright string color introduces a slight annoyance or optical challenge that isn't hardly noticeable but exists nonetheless, it seems very counterproductive. I am just reminded of when I used to watch football and some of the players had black paint under their eyes. I think my dad said it was to help keep the sun out of their eyes or something. It would make sense then, I would think, that at least the portion of string that houses your peep should be black to possibly benefit the effectiveness of your peep to some small degree, at least not detract from it. I can also imagine the color of the bow riser, especially in the sun, and the cables having at least a very small, possibly to a subconscious degree an annoyance and negative effect on shooting accurately or consistently from differently lit scenarios. Am I over thinking this??? Because, otherwise I think a confederate grey Mathews V3 with Dukes of Hazzard Orange accented grey String and cables would be just too cool! Especially if I buy one for me, since I grew up on watching the Duke boys foil many nefarious schemes of criminals and carpetbaggers alike, simply by hanging out of a '69 Dodge charger at speed and launching, with perfection, arrows with dynamite duct taped to them. In hind sight, they were probably more like superheroes that just good ole boys, hah! Anyway, what are your takes on the string color vs. accuracy and consistency? Sorry for the long comment/question, when I get rambling, I ramble on!

Hi mate, seeing as no one has answered you, I thought I might. My name is Nick Webb, and I am the owner of Aussie Bow Strings. I make custom strings for archers worldwide, custom to their order. I currently only make recurve, longbow, and horse bow strings, but I will be making compound bow strings and cables in the near future. As a experienced custom string builder, I have made many strings for both target archers as well as for hunters. So to address your question, Generally, most of my hunting customers prefer to go with a darker string than a bright one. Most order OD Green & Black, or OD Green & Tan, but I have also had hunters order 3 color strings like Royal Blue, Tan & Black, for a dark but colorful string. On the other hand, some of my customers have ordered Red, Yellow & Black strings, and have used them on hunts.. So I guess its more personal preference than anything. I myself have dark strings on my hunting recurves I hope this satisfies your curiosity on the matter :) haha

I'm looking for some advice. Is it safe to put a new string and cables on a bow where the previous string snapped on it. There isn't any visible damage to any part of the bow. I don't want the bow to break trying to put on the new string and cables. Or while I'm at full draw. I also can't afford the 6-8 hundred for a new bow either. Anybody's advice is welcome and appreciated.

If you have a choice, more expensive strings can be better than cheap strings. Stock strings on cheap bows are often crappier in quality and aren''t as resistent against abrasion compared to aftermarket strings. In some caases, you can blow through a string and cable set on a cheap bow in less than 6 months! This is because 1 major difference between cheap bows and more expensive bows is in the string, often companies will put on a low end string and cable set in order to save them some cash in production.

Hey great info! This may sound like a dumb question but where would you recommend looking for an inexpensive string for an older bow? @averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 4 жыл бұрын
When you say "old" do you mean like PSE Nova/Fireflight from the 80-90s old? If so, you should be using older, 8125 string materials, and that's usually significantly cheaper than today's more modern fibers. I believe there's a few guys on eBay making custom sets of 8125 for well less than $50.
@andrewe7165
@andrewe7165 4 жыл бұрын
@@averagejackarchery Ha not quite that old. My first Bow was a nova and it got stolen. I have been shooting a PSE Xcellerator for about 5 years that I got from a pawn shop for $50 lol. I actually don't know a ton about the specifics of archery but my bow shoots pretty darn well considering what it is. Shoots pretty fast and I just use cheapy Walmart Carbon Express arrows and generic broadheads. Works good enough for me. Haven't actually shot any deer yet. Passed up countless dear over the years but still waiting for the "right" one. I still have a couple weeks left in the Minnesota season. The string is still in decent shape but it's getting a little frayed so looking into restringing it before next season for sure.

@@averagejackarchery Thank you for your reply. So I see on this video you didn't mention the "wicked thread" string you say you use. You spoke of a few others. I am a little confused. I wanted to advise you that I tried reaching out to you on Facebook, thru its messenger. I also reached out to one of the string manufacturers, Winner's choice. However, I don't think I understood the way to pick What need from the choices available on their order page. Like for instance, under super custom, I chose type by guessing- 452x (vectran/Dyneema) as a target choice string. The colors of the 1st main string (Flo green), 2nd color black, and the serving silver. Entered string size, 88" . Then it asked to select a string and cable set. The choices were: Complete set $140 (does not specify what a complete set is), or One cam string $80 (which it has, one cam), or Two cam string $60 (not it), or Non-split buss cable $50 (don't know what that means or a buss), or Split buss cable $60. And so I am reaching out to you, to see if there's a way to be clear with no mistakes that I can get the strings I need. Thank you for your time.

My son just gave me back a bow I’d loaned him couple of years ago or so, a PSE Drive. It weighs a lot and has and some hand shock, but it’s deadly quiet and paid for. So since he’s had a shop put a new string and cables on, it doesn’t matter what brand they went with? I can get rid of his tubing peep with no worries?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 4 жыл бұрын
If they put on a string that's made with those modern materials I listed and not an older model like 8125 or the original 452, then most likely yes! Be warned though, single cam strings (if that what the Drive is) have a tendency to roll and settle in their tracks longer than non-single cam bows. Not the string's fault, just the nature of the beast with single cam bows.

True! Five piece sets from a sting maker can get expensive in a hurry. Well over $100.

60x makes very good strings, I live in Italy and I have their strings on a couple of my bows. The good new is they cost me, including shipping and customs, the same I have to pay in Italy for a comparabile set... Hey Jack, I see you have a single pin sight on that Victory, have you changed your mind 😉?

Haha! No the Victory is currently setup for indoor season, where I strictly use a single pin. But as soon as that's over it's right back to a multi pin sight!

@@beekeeper8474 Mine was an old comment, at that time they were very good, now I buy my strings here in Italy, as they cost me the same and they are the same quality 60X was when I wrote my comment. I really don't know anything about the products thay make now.

My cousin refuses to change his strings. They are the original ones over 10 years old. He doesn't tune the bow or check it. I have a hard time telling him why for the deer sake I don't want to hunt with him

I need help. I want to replace my string but I don't know what string to use. I have and old lever action bow. So I don't know if I should look at a nice soft string like spectra or a stiff string like 452 or somewhere in the middle.
@averagejackarchery

Definitely softer string material.

Thanks. I was leaning towards soft but compound bows use stiff so I wasn't sure.

I shoot both but the ability to make a flemish twist for longbow/recurve without any special tools is really convenient. Of course stock strings for those are also significantly less expensive as well.

my opinion is getting a real good pair of solid color strings the strings with 2 colors (twist) i find tend to have a problem tearing between those two colors

Winners choice is awful with traditional strings, after messing up the first order the 2nd string (on the house because we messed up) was corded so bad and had loose strings. Never again

Stay away from 60x they are junk and the warranty from all string makers are a joke. They will blame the bow and you are left screwed. Just have a shop make you set.
