Hey, sorry for budging in like this, but it could be a good idea to try and compare them using the same cab IR. I've generally found that cheaper modellers tend to sound way better when using a good quality IR vs the stock cabs. As a plus it would take that element out of the equation when comparing amps and effects. Cheers!

i completely agree, i have the Valeton GP-200 and i only find 1 CAB to be decent, the rest is quite "cheap" sounding, with third party IR's u can achieve a great sound comparable to much expensive units

The magic is in the IR's. I can't justify a Quad Cortex. But I do own several Neural Plugins and they are incredible. You could be doing Neural a disservice by using IR's from others.

This would be a smart comparison. And a fair one too because you are eliminating one variable. Sort of like comparing to different amp heads into the same cabinet.

Honestly, I could never justify spending multiple times more money on the Neural unit. The Valeton unit sounds incredible for the price, I can only imagine that with some time dialing in settings (plus experimenting with other IRs) that it would sound even better!

Fascinating to see the latest amp and pedal emulators. I had and extensively used the original Line 6 Pod and for many years a Pod X3 Live which in particular is still a fantastic bit of kit with great sounds. I've recently moved back to lots of pedals (mostly modern ones and a couple of my old vintage ones) and a flexible 20w Blackstar amp. I'm much, much happier with the tactile nature of actual pedals and knobs. Being able to tweak everything without the need for any menu's at all and no need to download the latest updates is such a benefit live, when practicing and recording.

I think the quality of the cheaper multi units is really improving. HX stomp user here but would have been very happy with something like the hotone devices that have come out. It would have been good to see what they both sounded like with the same IR too. That’s largely when you can start to hear differences or similarities with the devices as they play such a huge part in the sound

I doubt that most of us would have an opportunity to make a comparison like this, and it's interesting to see just what the difference is between budget and pro-level. Way less than what I'd been been led to believe from online comments - I thought the Valeton stood up pretty well there. More of this kind of thing please Andertons!

They've been doing "Sound Like" again for a while now. The people they got are weird people but they work very well together. It's also better now seeing as one of them is an actual bass player and not just a guitarist grabbing a very basic P-bass and Fender Rumble (even though it's a good combo)

This was very interesting, thank you. I own the QC and am very happy with it, although I use "real" when gigging, and I just use the QC in my home studio so far, but it sounds great and has a very real feel. As you said there wasn't always a LOT of difference between the 2 units, but there was consistently a difference in the QC's favor, and you have to leave that value equation to the buyer. A number of comments here about the IR's, which are valid, but the QC has plenty of very good-sounding IR's in the box. I don't normally watch your videos as they tend to be long, which is entertaining for some, but this was more "efficient" with less chat, which I liked!

It just goes to show how far digital tech has come. Only the player using these units would be able to tell the difference between the real thing and the digital simulations. In a recording mixed with other instruments, it would be very difficult to distinguish between the simulated settings and the real things that they're trying to simulate. I have to give credit again to the next level sound quality of Anderton's KZbin videos. The best in the business! 👍 Cheers guys.

I bought a Valeton GP200 as I needed a cheap backup for gigs where space and risk from drunk punters etc meant I didn't want to use my main pedal board. I just run it without any amp / cabs in the chain into a clean running Victory V50. I just have compression, OD, Chorus, EQ, Delay, Reverb in the chain. I find this is how it sounds best with an amp. Direct into a desk is a different matter. That's when Amp and Cabs come in handy. The line level mode changes the eq dramatically. EQ module is very usefull and could compensate for most of the difference in tone and "fulness" in the the two units shown the demo.

Why I love my QC: I can play 2 guitars, 1 bass and a vocalist in 4 parallel chains. And it sounds amazing. It might cost 4x but you get 4x - maybe you don't need it - but something to bear in mind.

I use Celestion IR's and I also added a BBE Maximizer stomp in the loop right after the amp/Speakers in my Valeton GP-200 and it really brings the amp to life and removes that boxy/blanket sound making it more alive. Yes it is a little of an extra expense but not nearly as much as a more expensive unit.

An interesting test would be to set up a real set up amp, cab, pedal... whatever, recreate it in the QC and the cheap unit and see what is the difference in the digital recreations? I also like to tell myself cheaper units are only getting better because of technical advancements of more expensive units.

Personally, I would love a QC on my board… smaller, lighter, and more powerful than my Helix. I tried one, but the lack of desktop editor was a real pain. I know it seems no more than a convenience feature, but Helix and Axe have them, and they’re such a big part of how I set up my sound.

Am very happy with my Valeton GP200. I’m just a beginner guitarist so it allows me to try a load of different amps and effects for not much money. It’s a lot more cost effective than buying a load of pedals or a QC while I’m just figuring stuff out. One tip I would give is that if you run the Valeton app on a laptop and connect via a USB cable then you can use your mouse and keyboard to tweak all of the settings, and if your laptop has a touchscreen then you can use that so it doesn’t matter that the unit doesn’t have a touchscreen

The Quad may have far more features, capabilities and sounds, but thinking on what's realistic or useful when playing in a band, but also recording, I believe the Valeton can stand up quite well in many situations, and has all the essentials to make it versatile enough. The price difference is like day and night, but I would believe the Valeton can keep up also well, with use but not abuse only time can tell. Thanks for the demo, great video.

It has some extra features compared to the stomp, however, the stomp uses the exact same chip as the big Helix floor unit. They sound the same. Andertons did a blind test of the big units already and could not hear a real difference. There's no reason to upgrade if you don't use the capture thing. Even more so with update 3.50 (which, like all updates for the Helix systems, is free). What you also have for an advantage is: you can connect your Stomp to a computer and edit your patches easily via HX Edit, something Neural DSP does not offer. Don't get me wrong, the QC is great, but your Stomp is already a high end professional device that's on the same level as the QC. :-)

I really feel like with all of these digital processor videos they should find a good quality IR and have that be a part of the demo process. Sure show us how it sounds with the stock stuff but to really hear the quality of the amp simulation, removing the 'stock cab' variable would really demonstrate the quality of the modelling algorithms. I feel like a lot of these A/B comparisons would be a lot more interesting and useful if both units were loaded up with the exact same IRs. Sure there's an argument about how that's an 'extra cost' but its a negligible cost (usually less than what a patch cable would cost you) and is especially affordable for those of us who are looking at cheaper digital processors. If IRs (and their prices) were factored into the comparison, we might see the gulf of 'bang for your buck' widen even greater. I hope the Andertons guys see this, Its one thing to ask for removal of some variables when comparing regular gear, I can see how its more hassle than for what its worth. But with digital gear being so convenient to set up and especially with loading the exact same IRs into 2 different units, I feel like that is something that should become standard in digital processor comparisons moving forward.

I am using the Valeton 200LT live in conjunction with an BlueGuitar Amp1. It does a great job, both in regard to amp sounds and effects quality. The handling is super-easy and I just miss a touch screen when it comes to editing the patch names. Using a PC simplifies that, obviously. I am not missing anything on this device, to be honest. I use it with 4cable method and change between Amp1 distortion and Valeton distortion sounds. It gives a big variety of sounds. Tweaking the sounds of the Valeton with the general EQ settings is easy as well. So basically, I don't get the reason to pay more than 5-times the price for the Quad Cortex. I have no doubt that this device is better, but the difference is really very minimal.

To sum it up. If you are looking to have a bunch different sounds while figuring things out as a beginner/intermediate the vaeltron is just fine If you are a professional musician the cortex or line 6 is the only real option

So you're also talking the differences between a balanced and unbalanced signal on the outputs right? Plus I'm sure the valeton you could EQ up to equal what the QuadCore is doing in sound, I know you're rushing but to really get them as close as possible, it's great to show, one being simpler and other other having to jump through menus of things to get a match or as best as possible.

I have had them all Quad, Kemper Stage, Helix, Boss Gx100, Headrush big floorboard and m5, I always go back to Fractal ax8. It’s set up perfect for live and studio as well as has amp controls on top I had Fractal iii as well ax8 just is best for me. Quad had a few issues kemper amps are great but effects lacked and fractal had all the above with best scene setup.

As an Axe-FX3 user I'd quibble with your statement that the QC is the best of the best. ;) That said, the Valeton sounds great for the money and I'd agree with Digital John that the interface makes a great deal of difference.

I didn't see it in the video, but it would have been very beniificial I think to demonstrate how you stitch through the different settings/patches in a live situation. I'm assuming on the Neutral DSP you can program the four buttons on the bottom row, however it appears that on the Valeton you' have to use the Tap/scroll foot switch to change patches in a live situation.

I have the Quad. Ive been using digital stuff for years. After having a Kemper I honestly cant use the cheaper stuff anymore. Even if they sound close on youtube videos the quad is just better. Theres a feel an a sound you cant hear over recordings. When you strum the cortex and have a good set of speakers you just hear it. Imagine the sound of hearing a song in low quality then hearing it in super uncompressed HD. Its like the feeling of an open room. Like its alive. Plus the cortex can run multiple players. So its super helpful when jamming with your friends to just have one unit.

I am a tube guy. What matters most to me is how these units feel and I think this is where the gt 1000 shines. It also sounds very good if you can live with the limited amp models. Can Digital John make a series on gt1000 vs helix after Update and quad cortex? I would be really interested in his opinion especially if you go for a more classic rock sound. I own the quad cortex but enjoy playing my buddies gt1000 alot more a soon as any kind of bigger monitoring system is present.... which is weird. I mostly use captures tho.

Question, I own a Blackstar TVP 260 and want to use it with a Neural DSP. Ive searched online how to do this and a few people have mentioned something called the 4 cable method. Is that how i can connect to my Blackstar after enabling the Send/return feature from Blackstar's software?

If I could afford the QC I would buy it in a heartbeat. I use Neural plugins live and use a midi foot controller for switching pedals etc. The Valaton is great value though. Good sounds. If it has midi functionality, one could use it to control Neural DSP plugins running on a laptop. Bot sure though. But it's a great way to get into that world.

Obviously the QC is a better superior unit and should be considering such a big price difference, the Valeton for its low price is solid, well built, loads of features and very good sounding. When doing a direct comparison though of same style amp/cab, adding a drive and delay, then I wouldn’t expect them to sound exact immediately without at least editing EQ parameters etc, my opinion is that every manufacturer will have their own preset parameter settings which would differ from another brands preset sound once loaded, with a bit more tweaking around you’d probably be able to make them sound much closer. Anyway both sound shit hot and it’s down to if you got a grand and half to buy the dogs bollocks Quad Cortex or if you’re a skint musician like me struggling to pay all life’s ever increasing bills so would need to sadly keep saving to afford a Valeton GP200 or GP200LT and once you’d saved the dollar for a Valeton would be quite happy, satisfied and wouldn’t be able to fault what you get for it’s low price, I wouldn’t get hung up cos it doesn’t sound quite as good as the QC, pretty sure you can work with the Valeton to achieve plenty of great sounding tones after editing parameters and I wouldn’t think that 99% of an audience at a gig could tell much difference in overall sound or really care as long as the band sounds good. I’ll get a Valeton soon and if I win the lottery or find a wallet I’ll get a QC.

The Neural Imperial MK2 amp plug-in is very cheap and sounds fantastic. It comes with most of the pedals you are ever going to need and has more tone-sculpting options than any normal person needs. Initially I wasn’t “into” amp plugins, but this is so good. Why pay for a digital processor in each pedal when you own a computer that has way more processing capability already? And using it with a DAW gives you so many easy-to-access options like a drum track and all the multitracking you could ever want. A semi-decent pair of studio monitors are plenty loud and sound great.

You would have to do a blind test on this one. The price, look prestige influence you more than the sound. There is even the gp-100 and a midi controler with the same sound at 100$ for 20X cheaper.

With more affordable amp emulators, I often leave off the cabinets which sometimes give it that “someone put a blanket over it” effect. Whatever the unit, in the end it’s about dialing in some sounds you like. Unless of course you want to be the most accurate sounding cover band on the planet.

Thanks for the great content, really appreciate it! Can you guys please make a video comparing differing ways to amplify an amp modeler? Should one go with power amp + normal cab, or FRFR speaker? or something like the Lin 6 Power cab? Which one is the closest to the "real amp + cab" feeling?
