I Tested Cheap Vs. Expensive Storage Solutions. One could kill you if you are not careful. Do expensive storages solutions work? Does vacuum sealing do a better job or is it just a waste of time?

I have some of those "restaurant" plastic containers. I use them for short term storage. They are so very convenient. (Number one example is that I make a bulk meat sauce. I split it up into the smaller version containers and freeze them. Then I can pull them out, put in a glass jar, microwave, a little acid for brightness, and add to whatever I'm making. Completely destroys any desire to order food delivery because I know I can have better food in a shorter time.) I have Zwilling - mostly bags. I think it is great for medium term storage. Also, it's can be part of the solution for a home cook looking to dip their toes into sous vide. Mason jars all the way for long term storage. The simple fact is that glass isn't gas permeable. No matter the advances in plastic, glass will always be the winner for long term storage. And as long as you aren't using the lids for canning, you can reuse them. I typically will just use mason jars of varying sizes so that, once closed, I will only be opening that jar once to use the entire container. Of course, this is a personal kitchen so I am dealing with a much smaller volume of food over time. I also have some mason jars for everyday food that I bought some twist lids to replace the standard lids. Honestly, those are less for preservation and more about keeping everyday things in an easily accessible glass jar. I mean, I already buying a 12-pack of mason jars... might as well use it for other things too.

Very useful info. I use glass containers almost exclusively. You can never go wrong with glass. I'll definitely start storing bananas the way you showed. They usually go bad before I manage to eat all of them.

Great video, I switched to square glass containers from plastic ones. Cause I found out allot of the plastic has lead. I get the Container store brand. With my rewards points, I get them for six dollars and change. So, now I mix my canned Tuna and Pink Salmon in the square glass containers. Should I store my sugar in a tall glass jar? I use a small glass canning jar to put sugar I use for my daily afternoon tea.

Would it work better if you wrap end of each banana as they say to do to make them last longer?
@AwareHouseChef
@AwareHouseChef 4 ай бұрын
Great suggestion! Unfortunately once you peel the seal off of the end of the banana you have to heat shrink it back on again or apply the seal with some kind of food safe adhesive. Any gap between the seal and the end of the banana will cause it to turn brown. All the best!

I'm very confused...don't you put bananas in a bag to ripen them? It seems you're trying to do the opposite.
@AwareHouseChef
@AwareHouseChef 4 ай бұрын
To the best of my knowledge, you put bananas in a paper bag to ripen them. Not a plastic bag.
@Scott-rf5ux

Yes, that's what I've heard too. But isn't the idea still to trap the gasses produced by the banana?
@itsROMPERS...
@itsROMPERS... 4 ай бұрын
Yes, bananas and other fruit emit ethylene has which enhances ripening. The whole design of this experiment (to use bananas) is very sketchy. The suggestion to use paper bags is just so the gas doesn't get too concentrated. I wouldn't take this very seriously.

I notice that Americans don't do too much recycle. If you don't do recycle correctly in Japan or Taiwan, the garbage truck will throw your trash back to you or refuse to take your trash. LOL
@AwareHouseChef

Here if you do not recycle, you get slapped with a pretty big Fynn in the urban cities. I admire the way Europeans recycle. I just got back from a trip to Spain and everybody takes it very seriously thanks for sharing!

@@AwareHouseChef Wow. That is good. Actually, Europe has a better recycling rate than Japan and Taiwan. I hope US can follow up.
