I visited Spain and I was blown away by the quality of the food and it made me ask, "Why are USA Food Products Inferior?" In this video I make Paella with 4-Star NY Times restaurateur and Chef Alex Bujoreanu. We try to answer this question and offer solutions on to how our hard earned money can buy us better produce.

Greetings from the EU! I'm glad you enjoy food in Europe, the possible explanation to the question why it tastes so much better is that here we have very strict laws when it comes to adding preservatives and colorants to food. Some of the chemicals that are accepted in the US are considered to be either poisonous or carcinogenic here and forbidden in food. I know that the EU has the reputation of bureaucratic giant but in reality it is very much focused on consumer. I'm not sure if the same attitude could be introduced in your country though, it seems you have powerful lobbies that are doing everything to prevent that. Anyway, best wishes for the New Year for you and your family and I hope your channel will be growing cause it's very interesting.

Thank you for your kindness and your explanation. I agree. I also think we do not allow our soil enough time to regain its nutrients. It is really up to the consumer to make a difference as our economy is very much driven by supply and demand. All the best!

That paella looks spectacular! As to the premise, I’d have to say it depends on how much effort you are willing to put in to find the best ingredients. At least where I grew up, and around our little corner of MA you can get top quality, local, unprocessed foodstuffs. It also helps to build a relationship with your local farmers. If you get to know them, they are often willing to try different varieties. We were able to get specific species of heirloom tomatoes, carrots, et al planted by asking. It takes time and effort, and you do pay a bit more, but I’ve been able to get almost everything from custom cut whey fed pork on down by building those relationships.

USA culture is entrepreneurial. You don’t get rich selling local, unprocessed food. You get rich producing huge volumes of food and shipping it. Carbon monoxide is cheap and makes food look better. Local food is better because it isn’t produced cheaply in mass, not because it wasn’t shipped. Eating wagyu every day shows you are successful, paying 20 centers more per pound of tomatoes does not. You are fighting a losing battle, American culture won’t change. Quit saying how great Europe is and take a trip to Mexico, food is great everywhere but here.

Carbon Monoxide is completely inert when it comes to food. That's not what's destroying the flavor of the food. My guess would be that it's processed differently, the EU has very high standards when it comes to food processing. Also oftentimes, the type of processing does not need to be labelled on the product, as long as it's legal and no chemical traces are left on the product. This might be technical enzymes or something else.

Remember, most of the EU heavily subsidizes food production. This will account for some of the cost difference.

Hi, with all your respect, I notice that Alex is from Lleida; that's why he uses Onion in the rice; Paella is from Valencia , Alicante and Castellón,and famous in all of Spain; but they don't ever use onion ever in the original paella. Only in Catalonia, this is why Alex uses onions. It's ok; relax.

Just a guess, but some European countries probably don't allow the same chemical crap in their food that we do?

another awesome video! just wondering , do the local asian markets( we have a pretty good one locally in NJ) get better seafood? I know if i want shrimp with heads attached i have to go there. Im wondering if they get better calamari too?
@AwareHouseChef
@AwareHouseChef 3 ай бұрын
Shrimp and calamari that come from Asia are of the poorest quality usually. Anything farm raised is very sketchy. That does include India as well. Your best source for shrimp is wild caught preferably from countries like Ecuador or Mexico and for calamari it’s best to purchase USA squid that’s been packaged here, thank you so much for reaching out and for your kindness as well! All the best

It may take me awhile to find time to watch your videos but i never miss them. There is a high chance of me moving to America in the future and the food quality there has always been an issue for me. I'm currently trying to convince my boyfriend to move to Europe instead haha He lives in LA I'd rather us move to Switzerland. What do you say George? Is America worth it?

@@AwareHouseChef The state that America has come into makes me so sad. The land of opportunity where everyone could make their dreams come true 😞 My great grandfather arrived at Ellis island at the beginning of the previous century and amassed a big fortune (what happened to the fortune is a long story). He is buried in Newburgh NY, I hope I get to visit his grave some day. I know LA and NY are in a pretty bad state with mass migration, criminality, homelessness, high taxes and everything basically falling apart. Greece is not better my friend. According to Eurostat currently Greece is the second poorest country in Europe after Bulgaria. And the most expensive compared to our income. And by far the most corrupt in Europe. Mass media and justice are totally controlled by the government. We are having a low-key dictatorship. That's why I'm considering Switzerland as a place to move to. It doesn't belong in the Eurozone, it has its own currency, it doesn't participate in wars, high standards of living, great constitution, amazing public services and it's at the centre of Europe, you can visit each country within a 2-3 hour flight. So tough choices are in order. We have to weigh the pros and cons.

They are inferior due to the industrialisation of the food industry and America like always is at the front. Look at meat and other products and all the regulations around them which give huge advantages to very large companies and punish small ones.
